Holidays in Zell am See-Kaprun
Zell am See-Kaprun, right in the heart of Austria, is one of the most multifaceted year-round holiday destinations. There is no other region in the Alps that offers so many spectacular places for excursions and alpine sights located as close together. Mighty mountains, mellow pastures, the glistening expanse of Lake Zell, the eternal ice of the Kitzsteinhorn glacier and the untamed forces of nature in the Hohe Tauern National Park unfold their very special charm in every season. The region offers perfect biking and hiking, trails, the crystal clear lake invites you to swim and in winter time the pistes on glacier and mountains are prepaired for skiing holidays.
Austria / Thunderstorm above Lake Zell - Zell am See - and aftermath 1.7.2019
35 degrees Celsius were measured in Zell am See area on July 1st, 2019. The sun was burning, and Lake Zell was full of people escaping the heat. At about 14:30, an impressive thunderstorm swept over the Lake area. As people saw the storm coming, they immediately ran away from the beach, leaving only a few weather enthusiasts behind to enjoy the spectacular wind gusts, rain curtains and heavy rain.
The aftermath bike tour through Pinzgau region was not less impressive: muddy flows, majestic clouds covering the mountains above Saalfelden, mighty Urslau river, and finally the tranquil surprising Ritzensee.
The thunderstorm brought down the temperature by at least 10 degrees, and ended the several days long heat wave.
A Day in Lively and Beautiful Zell am See, Austria - Part I
Zell am See is only a 30 minute Post Bus ride from Saalbach-Hinterglemm. The Bus stops right across from the Bahnhof (train station) and everything is within walking distance. Since the weather was supposed to be in the high 90s Fahrenheit, we decided to spend the day in this drop-dead beautiful town. Marine Steve spent a week in Zell am See in 1987; time to return and see what's been going on over the last 26 years.
It would take a magician to conjure up a more spectacular setting than Zell am See on the shore of turquoise Zeller Lake, or Lake Zell, surrounded by forested mountains and covered with Alpine pastures. People stand along the lake, snapping a gazillion photos, while saying, Have you ever seen anything more sublime? I must have repeated different versions of that line every few minutes as we walked the pedestrian path circling the lake.
Part II tomorrow will take you through Zell am See center...
Zell am see - Kaprun, Austria
A glittering lake surrounded by mountains with snow-white glaciers, green mountain meadows and rugged rocks. The uniqueness of the Zell am See-Kaprun region lies in its diversity. Nowhere else in Austria nature does have more to offer. Enjoy a wonderful alpine summer with me only on my show Musafir.

Zell am See Ski Resort | Crystal Ski Holidays
Zell am See is calling
A day in the life on a Crystal ski holiday in Austria
Find your perfect ski holiday in Zell am See
__________________________________________________
From Lake Zell to the top of the Schmittenhöhe - it's easy to fall in love with this amazing town and ski resort. Which adventures would you choose on a day of ski and après ski in Zell am See?
Follow a couple on a Crystal ski holiday to find out what they got up to.
__________________________________________________
We begin the day at dawn - with Matt on his balcony at the Hotel Grand, Zell am See. Matt is joined by his partner Hayley to enjoy the great view and prepare for an excellent skiing day.
The Hotel Grand has a prime position right on the edge of Lake Zell - with many rooms providing the signature lake views that Zell am See is known for.
After meeting with their friends, Chris and Kirsty - the four make their way up to the base station, by free ski bus, for the Porsche designed Schmittenhöhebahn and TrassXpress gondolas. These gondolas give them fast access to the Schmitten ski area of Zell am See.
At the top, Matt and Hayley meet up with their Crystal ski reps - with such a vibrant and stylish uniform it’s easy to spot then both on the mountain and in resort. The reps are happy to meet up with you at times and places that are convenient to your needs.
The reps demonstrate a few of the excellent features of the Crystal Ski Explorer app – although it is really easy to use. They have a look at the piste map for the area – which is easy to zoom in on. They also have a look at some recommended routes – suggested itineraries created by our teams to try and make the most of your time on the mountain.
Getting around is easy. High-speed chairlifts – many with heated seats – whisk you around the Schmittenhöhe. Pistes are generally wide and forgiving for new skiers – with plenty of blue runs to take advantage of - however there are some more challenging red and black runs for the more advanced skiers and snowboarders too.
There are plenty of places to stop off for a drink or a bite to eat on the mountain. Popular alms - or mountain huts – for lunch include the Pinzgauer hütte – with melt off the bone ribs a bit of a favourite. Schnapps Hans is a notorious après ski bar on the Schmitten. Make sure you catch the final gondola down to avoid skiing back to town in the dark.
Zell am See is also neighbour to Kaprun. Kaprun has several smaller ski areas including the Maiskogel and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. On the glacier there is year round snow and it is even possible to try summer skiing. Matt and another friend decide to head for a drink in the Ice-Camp – a very cool igloo bar.
Back in town - as the light is starting to fade - we see a great view over the roofs of Zell am See and toward the lake from the rooftop terrace at the Hotel Heitzmann.
Hayley makes the most of the pools, spa and wellness facilities at the Hotel Grand – a great way to relax after a day out on the mountain.
Exploring Zell am See after dark is very popular. The town looks lovely – especially when covered in snow – and is lit up. It has a real Christmas-feel all winter. Villa Crazy Daisy is a popular place to grab a warming après ski glühwein or hot chocolate. If you’ve gone for bed and breakfast then there are plenty of excellent restaurants around town – including many hotels which have an à la carte menu too.
Matt and Hayley eat at the Tirolerhof – an excellent hotel with a remarkable reputation for comfort, service and food. And with a warming open-fireplace in the lounge it’s a great location to catch up on the day’s stories and adventures before heading to bed ready for another day.

The picturesque Lake Zell is flanked by the Kitzbühel Alps which stark contrast make the hills come alive with the Sound of Music. This peaceful and calm destination has popular activities like boating, mountain biking, skiing, golfing, and hiking depending on the season of the year. The emerald green alpine lake ignites wonder and awe and the surrounding towns are reminiscent of fairytale frozen in time. The water is emerald green and everything about this area is unbelievably peaceful and calm. I wish we could have stayed here longer. These are images outside of a storybook and yes the Hills are Alive with the Sound of Music!

A Day in Lively and Beautiful Zell am See, Austria- Part II
From the edge of beautiful Lake Zell or Zeller Lake, we began walking down pedestrian only streets to the Altstadt, Old Center of Zell am See. Today was Sunday, and unfortunately the I (Information Office) was closed leaving us without detailed information to explore. But by asking questions, wandering up and down streets and following informational signs, we did manage to see its highlights.
Past ancient buildings from the Eleventh Century; the Kastnerturm Tower built in 926 as an escape tower for solders and citizens; churches; Town Square; and little streets filled with cafes, restaurants, everything flower-bedecked. What a place!

WHAT TO DO IN ZELL AM SEE-KAPRUN in 60 seconds
Austria in a nutshell, that’s Zell am See-Kaprun in 60 seconds: mighty mountains and pretty towns, lush meadows and cute llamas! Well…okay, it did surprise us, too! Here are our summer highlights.
///// 60seconds.travel. We travel the world. In 60 seconds./////
Saving time since 2016. Also on Facebook and Instagram.
It went all too fast? You want the details? No problem.
Here are our recommendations in order of appearance:
00:04 Mitterberghof, Schützingalm
So many incredible views, so many photopoints! If you're being framed in Zell am See-Kaprun, it's actually a good thing! That's how peaceful it is.
00:07 Seegasse, Zell am See
Pretty half-timbered houses and a very relaxed vibe make the District's capital a must-see. Have a local beer at the lake and just soak in the atmosphere, especially when the annual Seefest is that turns the place into a living fairytale.
00:10 Jodelschule, Uttendorf, Pinzgau
This longtime rural tradition of the Alpine region is as hard to do as it is fascinating. Tony of Die Jodelschule („the yodel school) gives classes and even awards yodel diplomas. More:
00:13 Kaiserschmarrn
„Emperor's Nonsense is the literal translation of Austria's most famous dessert: Kaiserschmarrn. It has its name from the Austrian emperor Franz Joseph I who loved his shredded pancake with raisins and plums.
00:15 Elisabethkapelle, Schmitten
This nice little chapel at the Schmitten was dedicated to legendary Empress Elisabeth of Austria who apparently loved her early morning hikes in the region – as much as her beloved Emperor Franz Joseph I (when he wasn't eating Kaiserschmarrn).
00:20 E-Motocross Park, areitXpress mountain station
If hiking is too boring for you – this is the place to go! But be careful, E-Motocross is not as easy as it looks or sounds. Arne crashed numerous times.
00:23 SUPcenter, Lake Zell
Yep, the SUP trend has reached Lake Zell, too. It's a fantastic way of exploring the lake – as long as you watch out for the sail boarders, pedal boats, electric boats and tourist cruises ☺
00:25 Edi’s Water Skiiing, Strandbad Thumersbach
So. Much. Fun! And yes, it was Arne's first time – so you can do it, too!
00:28 Paragliding Zell am See
One of the highlights of our trip was the tandem flying with these guys! The flight starts next to the Elisabethkapelle and usually lasts 20-60 minutes. The best view you will get of the region! Well, the second-best. Because there’s also the…
00:33 Sightseeing Flight
What a trip! We went with SennAir Helicopter and had really unique views. Such an experience does have its price of course. In this case 139,- Euros for 15 minutes.
00:39 Art on the Mountain, Schmitten
Even art buffs get their share, with sometimes quirky, sometimes genius art installations at the Schmitten. There’s lots of funny stuff you can discover along the way.
00:40 Hiking to 4 Reservoirs, Schmitten
Hiking is huge in Zell am See-Kaprun. The numerous reservoirs make for nice day trips. The big round is 5.7km long and can be done in 2 hours. More:
00:47 High Mountain Reservoirs, Kaprun
The two high mountain reservoirs in Kaprun almost look like fjords. Shuttle buses and Europe’s largest open inclined lift at Lärchwand take you to this almost mythical place. More:
00:49 Llama and Alpaca Walk, Mooserboden
Who doesn’t want to take a walk with llamas and alpacas? The 4Motion Team makes it possible. Unfortunately, we weren’t allowed to take one back home. More:
00:52 Nationalpark Gallery, Gipfelwelt 3000, Kitzsteinhorn
These info stations in an amazing 360m-long cave offer interesting insights into the Kitzsteinhorn. The walk terminates at the region’s highest panoramic platform. We felt like hobbits in dwarf Gimli’s home.
00:56 Peak Tour, Kitzsteinhorn
A 3000 metre peak has never been that easy – as you are only climbing the last 200 altitude metres. The 360° view was absolutely...we would have said „amazing“, but we were actually surrounded by fog. More:
00:58 Freeride Trails, Kitzsteinhorn
Mountain bike buffs can let off steam on these scenic Freeride Trails from 3.1 - 7.7 km:
01:01 Tauern Spa, Kaprun
And if even hiking is too much for you, then you can always just hang around in this amazing spa with numerous saunas (try the herbal one!), swimming pools and massage offers. Perfect to get ready for another round of Kaiserschmarrn.
