Needless to say, it was awesome | Mountain biking Helvellyn in the Lake District
Over and over again you guys suggested I go ride in the Lake District of England. Holy crap, I'm glad I did. We had a hellacious ascent up Helvellyn, with some of the craziest wind I've ever experienced, but that downhill was the thing of dreams. I loved every second of it.

Helvellyn, The Lake District, England
(Please reduce the screen image size for better quality.) An ascent of Helvellyn, England's third highest mountain. The climb starts in Patterdale and ascends to the 'Hole in The Wall', taking in views of the southern part of the Helvellyn range. The climb then crosses Striding Edge to the summit of Helvellyn, descending via Swirral Edge, before taking in the summit of Catstye Cam and the view over Ullswater. The descent then takes in the view of Helvellyn from Red Tarn, before returning to The Hole in The Wall. NB: Sadly, two people have recently died on Striding Edge due to the adverse weather conditions (January 2008). Please equip yourself properly and take great care if attempting the climb in the winter.

Places to see in ( Bowness - UK )
Bowness-on-Windermere is a town in South Lakeland, Cumbria, England. Due to its position on the banks of Windermere, the town has become a tourist honeypot. Although their mutual growth has caused them to become one large settlement, the town is distinct from the town of Windermere as the two still have distinguishable town centres. Historically part of Westmorland, in 2012, Bowness was one of the official stop off points for the Olympic torch before it made its way to the Olympic Games opening ceremony.
The town's ancient parish church of St Martin was built in 1483 but of an older foundation. The former rectory is said to have been built in 1415. Bowness-on-Windermere became a civil parish in 1894 and an urban district council was formed for the town at the same time. In 1905, the council merged with that of Windermere, and the two civil parishes merged in 1974 under the name of Windermere. The civil parish is governed by a town council.
During the 19th century, Bowness grew from a small fishing village to a town living almost entirely off tourism and holiday homes. It was the centre of the boat-building industry that provided the sailing yachts, rowing boats and steam launches used on the lake. A large number of hotels and boarding houses gave employment to the permanent population of the town. The arrival of the railway in 1847 in Windermere (the residents of Bowness had opposed a station in their own town) provided much of the momentum for the growth.
Windermere railway station offers train and bus connections to the surrounding areas, Manchester, Manchester Airport and the West Coast Main Line, and is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the lakefront. Both Stagecoach and the local council provide frequent connecting buses from Bowness Pier; Stagecoach's open-top double-decker buses travel through the centre of town and continue to Ambleside and Grasmere, while the council's wheelchair-accessible minibuses run around the edge of town. The Windermere Ferry, a car carrying cable ferry, connects Bowness at Ferry Nab on the eastern side of the lake with Ferry House Far Sawrey on the western side of the lake, a trip of approximately 10 minutes. For those looking for a more leisurely way to travel there are regular lake cruises running from Bowness Bay to the north end of the lake at Ambleside and south end at Fell Foot.

Lake District sees mixed reactions to world heritage status
The Lake District's elevation to World Heritage Status on UNESCO's annual list of sites has been met with a somewhat mixed reaction.
Some are celebrating what they see as long overdue acknowledgment, while others are not so convinced.
One man who celebrated the news was Nigel Wilkinson, Managing Director of Windermere Lake Cruises, who believes that it's about time the Lake District got the recognition it deserves.
He said: We believe that World Heritage inscription properly reflects the id…

A HIKE TO ORREST HEAD IN LAKE DISTRICT
#travelwithwimo #windermere #lakewalks #lakedistrict #orresthead #alfredwainwright #cumbria
A short circular from Windermere to Orrest Head, which was Wainwright's introduction to the Lake District. On a clear day, the ratio of views to effort put in probably cannot be beaten. The walk starts on the A591 by the large 'Orrest Head' sign and follows a lane most of the way on its 20 minute journey to the summit. From the summit, you could just return back down to the start, but the walk as described heads north to join a lane briefly near Causeway Farm. It then heads to enter a delightful woodland section through St Catherine's Wood and then via High Hay Wood back to the start. Wainwright said of Orrest Orrest Head for many of us, is 'where we came in' - our first ascent in Lakeland, our first sight of mountains in tumultuous array across glittering waters, our awakening to beauty. It is a popular walk, deservedly, for here the promised land is seen in all its glory. It is a fitting finale, too, to a life made happy be fellwandering. Dare we hope there will be another Orrest Head over the threshold of the next heaven?
The walk starts on the A591 on the opposite side of the road to the railway station, behind the green railings by the pedestrian crossing. It begins by turning up the lane by a large signpost informing you that you are on the footpath to Orrest Head

Directions: Nearest post code for Sat Nav: LA23 1WY - get directions here
Height climbed: 210 metres
Grade: 1-B: A short walk that requires modest uphill walking
Peaks / summits: Orrest Head 238m (783 feet)
There is a view indicator on the summit which points out the various landmarks on the surrounding skyline. There is an excellent all round view, with the coast to the south and looking across Windermere to the West are Swirl How, Wetherlam, Crinkle Crags, Scafell Pike right around to Wansfell Pike, Red Screes, the Kirkstone Pass and Ill Bell to the North.
