Lakeside Model Railway (Clare Valley)
Clare Valley Model Engineers, a Membership Club in Adelaide offering Train Rides
The club was formed in 1998 and our first section of track (a 400metre loop) was in use in November of that year. We now have a kilometre off the track with 3 bridges and a tunnel and another section and bridge under construction. We are situated in Melrose Park which is about 10 hectares in size and contains a 2-hectare lake.
Members come from all walks of life and only one member worked in railways. Not all members own trains or wish to drive trains but find interest in helping the club with construction or gardening etc. The club does have two trains for members use.
We hold 2 working bees each week on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

Clare Valley Model Engineers: Hobbies Alive 2011 Part 1
Part 1: A look at the line: Tram 1832 and her owner Ron Gepp take us on a tour of the Lakeside Railway which will feature in future parts of the Hobbies Alive videos.
We depart from Lakeside Station and head out on the Inner Loop and then past Lakeside Station and out onto the Outer Loop, through Megawatt Junction, the tunnel and back into Lakeside Station.
Locos NB30, Gilly, Neil, Railcar 106, CLP14 and Bluey are also seen in this video.
SASMEE PARK, ADELAIDE
The South Australian Society of Model and Experimental Engineers (SASMEE) runs a variety of ride-on model steam trains at their SASMEE PARK site at Millswood, Adelaide, South Australia. I used to visit the site as a teenager, and had not been back to the park for over 40 years until I visited again with my niece, and her husband and two children in August 2010. Entirely volunteer run, the park is open to the public on the first Sunday and third Saturday of each month - weather permitting - from 2 to 4.30pm (*not* 5.30pm as stated at the end of the video).
With an entry price of just $5 for adults and $3 for children, SASMEE PARK is one of my Adelaide 'Hidden Gems'. Once inside the site, children and adults can ride the trains as often as they like for no additional cost.

Alan Daff built Dale D and named it after his grandson. When asked what colour he wanted the loco, the grandson said he wanted a green loco, so naturally the Australian National colour scheme was applied. The locos home club is Roseworthy but it visited Clare during the Hobbies Alive weekend.

Neil is owned by Allan Mattin. At the start of the weekend he was hauling two passenger cars and four teddy bears riding in the freight car at the back. Unfortunately, due to mechanical problems with Neil, the frieght car was put in the shed around lunchtime on saturday and Neil and the two passenger cars carried out the rest of the weekend on their own.

CLP14 is a 1/8 Scale model owned by Don Springbet. The model is unique as its controls are set up much like the real thing, with air brakes, throttle etc. This engine is a popular choice of transport for the cast of Meerkat Manor, with their own special wagon at the back of the train!
