History:
The temple is believed to come into existence when Vishnu killed Hiranyakashyap, slew another giant named Jharasura. While breathing his last, Jharasura requested Vishnu to reside in the cave in which he was living and to grant boons to devotees. Granting last wish of his, Narasimha came to live in the cave and hence the name.
This water cave temple virtually runs into a cave with water measuring 300 meters. The temple is a powerful deity of Lord Narasimha as per the belief where one has to wade through water up to chest height to have darshan of the idol. It's a thrilling experience to travel through the cave as there is natural water within it. The bats and owls sitting on the roof top of cave are harmless to the devotees. The place is surrounded by picturesque valley.

800 year old -Lakshmi Narasimha swamy Temple, #Bhadravati #incredibleindia 13th century
Lakshmi Narasimha Temple, dedicated to an incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu, was built by the Hoysalas in the early 13th century. It is located in Bhadravati, an industrial town and taluk in the Shimoga District of Karnataka state, India. It is situated at a distance of about 255 km from the state capital Bangalore and at about 20 km from the district headquarters Shimoga. The art historian Adam Hardy categorizes the architectural style as a triple shrine (vimana) construction with two exceptional stellate forms, one for the shrine facing west and one for the shrines facing north and south, the basic building material being Soap stone. The temple stands on a jagati and the outer wall exhibits a two tier decorative plan. The monument is protected by the Karnataka state division of Archaeological Survey of India.
Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Brahmarathothsav in Devarayanadurga, Karnataka
Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Brahmarathothsava of Karigiri kshetra in Devarayanadurga in Tumkur district in Karnataka. The festival is being celebrated with exultation. One ca see the presiding deity Sri Lakshminarasimha decorated with flowers. Hindu devotees can be seen offering flowers to the God.
Devarayanadurga is located very close to Tumkur district in Karnataka. True to its name “Devarayanadurga, when translated aptly means “Fort of the God”. Though it had various other names, it got the name Devarayanadurga after the Mysore ruler Chikka Devaraja Wodeyar captured it on one of his victorious feats.
The place is located above 4000 feet above sea level and can be a weekend pilgrimage spot and getaway for a quick retreat or picnic, to escape from the grind of the daily hustle and bustle of city life. It is also a trekker’s paradise, due to the fact that it has numerous hillocks surrounding it, and many wildlife enthusiasts, in fact, throng the place for various wildlife shoots etc. It is declared as a protective reserved forest by the forest department of Government of Karnataka.

Hampi Utsav 2020 | Laksmi Narasimha, Badavi Linga & Queen's Bath | Mahanavami Dibba
In this 4th episode of Hampi video series, we are exploring Laksmi Narasimha, Badavi Linga, Queen's Bath, Stepped Tank and Mahanavami Dibba of Hampi.
#Hampi #KarnatakaTourism #StepsTogether
Lakshmi Narasimha (Ugra Narasimha) Idol
We left Krishna temple complex at 4.10 PM and headed towards the popular Lakshmi Narasimha statue. This huge idol is easily noticeable from the main road itself. The iconic monolithic idol is the largest statue in Hampi. The idol is damaged majorly so much so that people often call it as Ugra Narasimha even though it is a representation of Lakshmi Narasimha.
The original idol had the image of Goddess Lakshmi sitting on the lap of Narasimha. But, the idol of Lakshmi had been completely demolished during the fall of Vijayanagara dynasty and thus making the impression of Ugra Narasimha. It is said that even now we can see the hand of Goddess Lakshmi idol resting on the back of Narasimha. But, you cannot see this because entry inside the enclosure is restricted.
Badavi Linga
Next to Lakshmi Narasimha idol, you can find the largest Shiva Linga of Hampi known as Badavi Linga. It is also housed in a small chamber with only one opening at the front. The Shiva Linga is very big and lower portion of the linga is always submerged in water. It is believed to be constructed by a poor woman hence the name Badavi Linga (Badavi means poor lady in Kannada). We left Badavi Linga at 4.30 PM and headed towards Royal Enclosure.
Queen’s Bath:
After visiting Badavi Linga idol, we headed towards Royal Enclosure. On the Royal Enclosure side of Hampi, the first attraction you will get to see is Queen’s bath.
This is the place where queen used to take bath. However, many theories decline this and suggest that it is a place used for recreational activities. Whatever be the case, it is a beautiful structure one cannot miss. It has an empty pond in the middle and a beautiful open pavilion with small windows. There are steps on one side through which one can get to the pond area. We spent time there till 5 PM and headed further towards the Royal Enclosure area.
Mahanavami Dibba:
The first structure you get to see in the Royal Enclosure is the huge Mahanavami Dibba. Mahanavami Dibba is a large stone platform built by Krishna Devaraya of Vijayanagara dynasty to celebrate his victory over Udayagiri. The structure is more beautiful than you see in the photos. When I Had a look at the photo of this place before visiting, I did not find it interesting at all, but the reality is quite different.
You need to climb about 25-30 big steps to reach the top. The side walls of the platform have a well-carved array of sculptures. At the top, there is nothing except a big plain stage. This is from where kings used to watch the march past of the army, cultural celebrations during Dusshera, sword fights, and other cultural activities. Now, if you go on top and have a look, you can find the ruins of the Royal Enclosure. Though it is sad to see the renowned town in such condition, never miss to sit there for some time and imagine the glorious past of the place. At the backside of the platform also, there are steps to climb. You can climb up from the front steps and climb down using the rear steps to cover the structure completely.
Stepped Tank:
From Mahanavami Dibba, we walked towards the stepped tank which is in the same enclosure. This stepped tank was excavated in the 1980s and is one of the beautiful water tanks. Well maintained by the ASI, the tank has steps in the formation of pyramids next to each other making it look elegant. The water of this tank was believed to be used for religious purposes. Next to this tank is the public tank. This is a bigger and normal looking tank. There is no water in the public tank currently. Apart from these, there is a king’s audience hall in this royal enclosure.

LAKSHMI NARASIMHA I HISTORY OF HAMPI I EP 05 I The RUINS OF HAMPI, KARNATAKA INDIA II#historyofhampi
#Hampi (ruins of hampi) is one of the most impressive and scenic sites present in India that draws several thousand tourists from across the globe.
Hampi is world famous UNESCO World Heritage Site situated in the east-central Karnataka, India. It was the center of the Hindu Vijaynagara Empire capital in the 14th century.
Based on the chronicles left by foreign traders such as Persian and European, it is believed that the state of Hampi was a prosperous and grand city.
The Hampi is located on the banks of the Tungabhadra River. This was a bustling city replete with numerous temples, farms and trading markets.
By 1500 CE, Hampi-Vijayanagara was the world's second-largest medieval-era city after Beijing, and probably India's richest at that time, attracting traders from Persia and Portugal.
As per the archives left by European travelers and traders, the Vijayanagara Empire was defeated by a coalition of Muslim sultanates and its capital was conquered, looted and destroyed by sultanate armies in 1565, after which Hampi remained in ruins.
The site of Hampi is located near Hosapete in Karnataka and nothing is lefts of this city right now, except Hampi’s ruins that are spread over 4,100 hectares.
The city has been described by UNESCO as an austere, grandiose site of more than 1,600 surviving remains of the last great Hindu kingdom in South India that includes forts, riverside features, royal and sacred complexes, temples, shrines, pillared halls, mandapas, memorial structures, water structures and others.
Hampi predates the Vijayanagara Empire; there is evidence of Ashokan epigraphy, and it is mentioned in the Ramayana and the Puranas of Hinduism as Pampaa Devi Tirtha Kshetra. Hampi continues to be an important religious centre, housing the #VirupakshaTemple, an active Adi Shankara-linked monastery and various monuments belonging to the old city.
Hampi empire is a deserted Hindu Kingdom that was famous for its glory and wealth during the 14th century. It is believed that the Hampi was the second largest wealthy city in the world after Beijing and the richest city of India.
It became the center of the Vijayanagara empire capital in the 14th century. Hampi empire, also known as the group of monument houses about 16,000 old structures, is located on the Tungabhadra River in Bellary district of Karnataka state.
Known as UNESCO Heritage site (quote from unesco.org) “The austere, grandiose site of Hampi was the last capital of the last great Hindu Kingdom of Vijayanagar. Its fabulously rich princes built Dravidian temples and palaces which won the admiration of travelers between the 14th and 16th centuries.”
A narration of the detailed history of Hampi may be seem impossible as it is a huge topic to cover. We've tried to give a brief account of Hampi through these series of videos. Please watch them all and let us know your reactions through comments.
