Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque (Saint Nicholas's Cathedral), Famagusta, Northern Cyprus
The Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque originally known as Saint Nicholas's Cathedral and later as the Saint Sophia Mosque of Magusa, is the largest medieval building in Famagusta Built between 1300 and 1400, it was consecrated as a Catholic cathedral in 1328. The cathedral was converted into a mosque after the Ottoman Empire captured Famagusta in 1571 and it remains a mosque to this day. The building is built in Rayonnant Gothic style, quite rare outside France, though mediated through buildings in the Rhineland. The historic tie between France and Cyprus is evidenced by its parallels to French archetypes such as Reims Cathedral. Indeed, so strong is the resemblance, that the building has been dubbed The Reims of Cyprus; it was built with three doors, twin towers over the aisles and a flat roof, typical of Crusader architecture. The upper parts of the cathedral's two towers suffered from earthquakes, were badly damaged during the Ottoman bombardments of 1571, and were never repaired. With the Venetians defeated and Famagusta fallen by August 1571, Cyprus fell under Ottoman control and the cathedral was converted into a mosque, renamed the St.Sophia Mosque of Magusa.

Saint Nicholas's Cathedral | Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque @ Cyprus / Famagusta
Designed by French Jean Langlois. Cathedral construction started in 1298 AD. Construction took nearly 30 years and completed in 1326. While the Lusignan dynasty ruled, Lusignan kings came to Saint Nicholas Cathedral to be crowned as King of Jerusalem. This is due to the loss of Jerusalem by Crusaders. Several Lusignan royal members are buried here. After loss of power royal rights and ownership of Cyprus ceded to Venetians in 1489.
While the Ottoman conquest, building is heavily damaged in 1571. Then Ottomans transformed the building into a mosque (twin towers demolished, burials were emptied, frescos whitewashed, altars demolished) But transformation to mosque preserved building's architecture all intact (there is no Baroque additions). This building is one of rare remaining examples of pure gothic architecture.

Cipro Nord -- Moschea Lala Mustafa Pasa - North Cyprus - Lala Mustafa Pasa Mosque
The Cathedral of St. Nicholas, built in early 1300 on the French model of the cathedral of Reims is still the most important monument of the city, the Turkish conquerors destroyed all the decorations of the interior, they uncovered the graves of flattered and scattering the bones.
The church, in its unmistakeable Gothic style, was transformed into a mosque, named after Lala Mustafa Pasha, commander of the troops victorious over the infidels and executioner Bragadin.
The exterior, more suggestive of the interior (which still has beautiful stained glass windows), is full of roses and decorations very embroidered.
Today, the facade is still beautiful, despite the two towers cut off, and the minaret was erected at the side of a tower, but you do not notice much.
Entering the other hand, the feeling is very strange, the Gothic structure is even more impressive, all painted white and devoid of any ornament. The Turks have just added the mihrab, facing Mecca, and the minbar, the floors are covered with carpets.

Lala Mustafa Paşa Cami ( St. Nicolas Katedrali )

Life Of Lala Mustafa Pasha - The One Who Betrayed Sehzade Bayezid
Lala Kara Mustafa Pasha (Lala Mustafa Pasha) (c. 1500 – 7 August 1580) was an Ottoman general and Grand Vizier from the Sanjak of Bosnia.
He was born around 1500, apparently near the Glasinac Plateau in Bosnia, as the younger brother of Deli Husrev Pasha, who apparently helped him rise through the system's ranks more quickly.
Mustafa Pasha briefly served as kaymakam (acting governor) of Egypt Eyalet in 1549. He had risen to the position of Beylerbeyi of Damascus and then to that of Fifth Vizier. He commanded the Ottoman land forces during the conquest of previously Venetian Cyprus in 1570/71, and in the campaign against Georgia and Persia in 1578. In the final three months of his life, he was Grand Vizier from 28 April 1580 until his death.
It is notable that he was the tutor of Sultan Suleyman's son, Şehzade Bayezid. Apparently, he was in agreement with Bayezid's decision to rebel against his father, although he didn't openly support him in a financial or military way. He also had a long-standing feud with his cousin, Sokollu Mehmed Pasha.
The honorific Lala means tutor to the Sultan; he had been tutor to the Sultan's sons. Mustafa was known for his cruelty towards vanquished opponents, a reputation that was amply borne out by his treatment of Marco Antonio Bragadin, the Venetian defender of Famagusta, whom he had skinned alive.
He is buried in the courtyard of the Ayub Mosque in Istanbul. His tomb was designed by Ottoman architect Sinan.
Legacy
He has a street named after him in cities including Larnaca, Cyprus.
