Durant le week-end de l'Ascension, la circulation des trains était interrompue entre la Gare Saint-Jean à Bordeaux et la Gare de Libourne.
Il s'agit de ce que la SNCF appelle une « Opération Coup de Poing » (OCP). Cette opération a duré 111 heures du Jeudi 5 au Dimanche 8 Mai 2016, avec des équipes se relayant jour et nuit pour assurer les travaux. Ces travaux débutés depuis 2005 consistent à faire « sauter le bouchon ferroviaire de Bordeaux ». En effet, les trains ne circulaient que sur 2 voies au Nord de la Gare St-Jean, ce qui créait « un goulet d'étranglement » avec la circulation imposée à cet axe majeur. L'objectif était donc de faire circuler les trains sur 4 voies, en en créant 2 supplémentaires jusqu'à Cenon. À termes, cela va permettre d'une part d'adapter les infrastructures ferroviaires pour la mise en service de la LGV Sud-Europe-Atlantique (St-Pierre-des-Corps ↔ Bordeaux) en 2017, et d'autres part de développer le trafic TER et Fret grâce à l'augmentation de la capacité de cette ligne.
