Lamanai River Cruise - from Orange Walk Town, Belize to the Lamanai Maya Ruin
We booked a river trip at Hotel de la Fuentes in Orange Walk. It was one of those days where you run out of SD-Cards quickly. So many animals, birds, sights.
Lamanai (submerged crocodile) is one of our favorite Maya sites in Belize with its very well reconstructed Mask Temple and breathtaking views from the top of the High Temple.
On our way back, we made some new friends - but see for yourself.
Lamanai
Lamanai temple complex sits atop the western bluff of the New River Lagoon surrounded by pristine rainforest. Lamanai was occupied continuously for over 3,000 years and it's remoteness contributed to its continuous occupation, well beyond most other Maya sites, until at least 1650 AD.
When the Spanish invaded northern Belize from the Yucatn in 1544, one of the most important of the missions they set up was Lamanai, where they had found a thriving Maya community. But the Maya never readily accepted Spanish overlordship, and a rebellion in 1640 left the Lamanai mission burned and deserted. Maya may have continued to live here until the late 17th or 18th century when they were decimated by an epidemic, probably smallpox.

Lamanai (from Lama'anayin, submerged crocodile in Yucatec Maya) is a Mesoamerican archaeological site, and was once a major city of the Maya civilization, located in the north of Belize, in Orange Walk District. The site's name is pre-Columbian, recorded by early Spanish missionaries, and documented over a millennium earlier in Maya inscriptions as Lam'an'ain. Lamanai is renown for its exceptionally long occupation spanning three millennia, beginning in the Early Preclassic Maya period and continuing through the Spanish and British Colonial periods, into the 20th century. Unlike most Classic-period sites in the southern Maya lowlands, Lamanai was not abandoned at the end of the 10th century AD.

Going there by boat will take a few hours to reach but you will experience an awesome view of the Belize new river and its plants and animals like Iguanas, birds and crocodiles. After reaching Lamanai, aside from the temples and ruins, youll get to see howler monkeys and local trees growing and they say, if you get lucky you may spot a Jaguar.

Belize's Land of the Submerged Crocodile
Lamanai, one of Belize's largest Maya sites, sits on the bank of the 30-mile long New River Lagoon in the Orange Walk District. Lamanai features monumental architecture of temples and palaces dating from the Classic and Pre-Classic Periods. Set in tropical forest and providing spectacular views from several of its large temples, Lamanai provides you a unique glimpse into the culture of the Maya and the biological diversity of the tropical rainforest.
Lamanai was occupied for more than 3,000 years, up until European contact. The Archaeological Reserve not only contains a museum with ancient Maya artifacts, but visitors can also see the remnants of two 16th century Spanish churches and a colonial sugar mill established in 1860.
