Lamanai Ruins and Boat Ride 2011
Eco Tours, Ltd. was hired to take my family and eight other tourists to visit the ruins of Lamanai in the Orange Walk district in Belize. It was a fantastic experience and we were treated well by Eco Tours. Here's a video showing highlights from our ~1 hr jungle boat ride (both ways) and ~2 hr tour of the Mayan ruins. We also had a short city tour of Belize City on our way to the Orange Walk area. Not included was the 1 hr bus ride to travel from Belize city to the Orange Walk area. The music is from the Gladiator soundtrack.

The Dam Family Trip (Blue Creek, Orange Walk Town)
Mennonite settlements do not generally attract tourists, but Blue Creek has modernized that common perception. Visitors to Blue Creek sometimes rub their eyes in disbelief that they are actually still in Belize. Supporting the border-to-border diversity found throughout Belize, Blue Creek fascinates curious travelers keen to experience a lifestyle (almost definitely) different from their own.

Orange Walk District In Northern Belize Is Land Of Sugar
Orange Walk District In Northern Belize Is Land Of Sugar And Honey The Best Hotels in Orange Walk, Belize (with Pictures) It’s affectionately called ” Sugar City “. Located about 55 miles north along the northern Highway, Orange Walk is a drive of about 65 minutes from Belize City . It is an easy 30 mile drive to Corozal Town. The country’s only tollbooth signals the entrance to Orange Walk Town, and after paying the small toll of about US. 50 cents, one immediately notices two distinctive sites: the scenic New River with tour guide operators hugging its banks and the smokestacks of the sugar mill. Sugar, though, no longer reigns supreme in Orange Walk. In addition to the economic boost from eco tourism, there has been agricultural diversification in recent years. This has seen the recent introduction of fields of soybean, onions and papayas as cash crops. The Orange Walk district is also well known for its cattle and rum production. The Orange Walk District, with a population of just over forty thousand, is the country’s third largest populated district and is much more than sugar, soybean and honey country. Orange Walk provides exotic places to visit. The sights and sounds of nature abound here, either at the famous Mayan ruins of Lamanai and Cuello, or at various places along the New River for the jungle river adventurer. And, with over 400 species of birds recorded in this district, more so than anywhere else in the country, the Orange Walk District is truly a birder’s paradise. And, of course, if one wants to continue further north after enjoying Orange Walk, 30 miles away is the border town of Corozal and the Free Zone

3D Tour of Lamanai Mayan Ruins Archaeological Site
3D Tour of Lamanai Mayan Archaeological Site. Filmed September, 2011 with a JVC GS-TD1BU 3D prosumer camcorder.
Lamanai (from Lama'anayin, submerged crocodile in Yucatec Maya language) is a Mesoamerican archaeological site, and was once a considerably sized city of the Maya civilization, located in the north of Belize, in the Orange Walk District. The site's name is pre-Columbian, recorded by early Spanish, and documented over a millennium earlier in Maya inscriptions as Lam'an'ain.
Lamanai was occupied as early as the 16th century BC. The site became a prominent centre in the Pre-Classic Period, from the 4th century BC through the 1st century CE. In 625 CE, Stele 9 was erected there in the Yucatec language of the Maya. Lamanai continued to be occupied up to the 17th century AD.
The vast majority of the site remained unexcavated until the mid-1970s. Archaeological work has concentrated on the investigation and restoration of the larger structures, most notably the Mask Temple, the High Temple and the Temple of the Jaguar Masks. (Information from wikipedia.org)

Scuba Diving a Cenote in Little Belize
After a failed attempt to dive this cenote last year, we finally had success. And for some reason our drive was stopped by the annual bicycle race. But all turned out well in the end.

For the latest news across Belize, visit:
Cowpen is a small village located in the heart of the banana belt in southern Belize. It is populated by workers of the industry, who toil the fields or package the fruit. While the export of bananas, primarily to the European Union, contributes significantly to the economy as one of the top agricultural exports, the village had been without electricity since it was established. But all that is changing because the European Union has partnered with government and Belize Electricity Limited to provide electricity to the village. For residents, it is a major development. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

BEEF BECOMES A LUCRATIVE PIECE OF MEAT
A few years ago, the Belize LiveStock Producers Association (BLPA) in Blue Creek along with GOB and other stakeholders started to formulate the Belize National Sanitary Cattle Plan Project, better known as Cattle Sweep. The purpose of the project was to smooth the progress of exporting cattle into neighbouring countries in a formal fashion. And since then, cattle has been a lucrative and thriving industry for the country, but today at the local scale, Belizean consumers are feeling the pinch in price hikes and the availability of beef products is dwindling.

790 Lamanai Lane, Cerros Sands, Corozal District, Belize
BelizeDC.com/790-lamanai-lane.html
790 Lamanai Lane is a Channel Lot located in the Cerros Sands development of La Playa de Cerros Maya. The backyard of the Lot faces the Channel to allow for direct boating access to the sea.
This property constitutes a stylishly new development situated in Cerros Sands in Corozal District, the most northern part of the beautiful tropical country of Belize. Traveling about ten miles southeast by land from Corozal Town to Cerros Sands requires crossing the 10 minute ferry while also passing through two beautiful villages such as Copper Bank Village and Chunox Village. 790 Lamanai Lane has been cleared with great care to maintain ample privacy and serenity.
A dredged boating channel of 80 feet wide by 12 feet deep leads to sparkly clean sea making this site inevitable. There are road frontage views of the main road including Cerros Lane venturing up to the beautiful fishing village of Sarteneja where with a short boat ride to Chetumal, easy duty-free shopping can be done.
790 Lamanai Lane is in a ready-to-build your dream home investments plan condition and is capable to manage up to a 5 bedroom home with enough land available that can be turned into a home-park for the kids. You can stroll down to the end of the boating channel, go for a swim, or take pleasure in listening to the quietness. Other property features may include but are not limited to biking, canoeing/kayaking, fishing, family, and skiing.
It is also positioned in an on-going developing community which can be best described as one emerging from the tropical ever-green rain-forest that sits along the coastline of the said villages facing the famous Lowry's Bight Bay. This empty lot of spectacular raw flat land has been previously filled and compacted ensuring sufficient privacy, and due to its area of location, the land offers multi-use zoning such as residential, commercial or agricultural use that may be appropriately fit to apply. In addition, all building requirements which may include water services, electricity services, cable services, high-speed internet services and telephone services are readily available.
Come build your year-round, retirement, or vacation home in tropical paradise.

Raise cane, says Jose Mai; the more the merrier
For the latest news across Belize, visit:
Mai does have some suggestions for the commercial agreement. He wants it ironclad that, with the accompanying investments in the sugar mill, that not a stalk of cane is left in any field in Orange Walk or Corozal – it should all be ground at Tower Hill. A.S.R./B.S.I., he told us, should take every opportunity to grind cane because the alternative is not having enough to produce the quality of sugar that Belize can be proud of selling internationally and farmers can benefit from.

Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area - Programme for Belize
Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area - Programme for Belize Created in 1988 by a purchase agreement between Gallon Jug Agroindustries and Programme for Belize for 110044 acres of land comprising the northern section of the Gallon Jug property. Subsequently enlarged by the donation of 42007 acres by Coca-Cola Foods Inc. in 1990, a further donation by Coca-Cola Foods Inc. of 52015 acres in 1992, purchase from New River Enterprises Ltd. of 14011 in 1994 and the signing of a purchase agreement with New River Enterprises Ltd. for an additional 12798 acres also in 1994. All outstanding payments under the purchase agreements were completed by December 1995. Management responsibility was assumed on signing each purchase agreement. Programme for Belize is a Belizean NGO constituted as a nonprofit company and holds the land in trust for the people of Belize under the terms of a formal Memorandum of Agreement with the Government of Belize. The Memorandum of Agreement also provides for continuity of conservation management, stating that the land must be passed to another organization of similar aims if PFB must relinquish ownership. The cultural heritage of the area is extraordinarily rich. Over 60 Mayan sites have so far been located, ranging from major ceremonial centres, and elite dwellings, to field and terrace systems, to industrial sites producing stone tools. House mounds are almost ubiquitous. La Milpa, on the western part of the site, is considered the third largest ceremonial centre in Belize while Dos Hombres, an elite palace, approaches La Milpa in extent. Most of the visible architecture dates from the Late Classic (8th - 9th century AD), when it is believed that all available resources were exploited to the maximum, but the archaeological record extends from pre-ceramic to the European contact period. During the 19th and 20th century the area formed the principal mahogany forest of the Belize Estate and Produce Company, an important influence on the economic and social development of British Honduras/Belize, and many relics remain. Colonial land use has not yet been examined in detail but the physical evidence, when taken with the documentary record, promises to give valuable insights into the period.

Finca Solana 50x75 Lot 03 in Corozal, Belize
This 3,750 square feet of Finca Solana 50x75 03 land is generally clear with pure solid grounds throughout the property, having fertile soils making this piece of sea view land very attractive.
Finca Solana 50x75 03 is capable to sustain most of Belize's tropical fruits. It is in good shape; ready to be developed into either a business or a private sea view estate and perfect for the typically large residence while still having enough space for possible businesses that may perhaps be successful. Possible businesses may include, but are not limited to, the means of water-sports such as having a diving company which serves as a tourist based business in this area.
Whilst most of the water is shallow-like, there are sections of the seabed in front of the property that is deep enough allowing easy access to the land via boat, or via small yacht. It is possible to enjoy taking an evenings walk and swimming out to the sea from this property; either for easy shopping, or for an incredible boat ride and exceptional fishing experiences that are unimaginable elsewhere. The center of Corozal town is only 5 minutes away and the shore line is about 2 minutes away from this Finca Solana 50x75 03 Lot. San Pedro and several other Cayes are less than a 2-hour boat ride away from the property. The land comes with water, electricity and high-speed internet services as it is surrounded by a mixed income community with houses ranging from $200,000 BZE to $2,000,000 BZE.
