Lamayuru or Yuru Gompa is a Tibetan Buddhist Gompa (monastery) in Kargil District, Western Ladakh, India, situated on the Srinagar - Kargil - Leh road 15 km east of the Fotu La, at a height of 3,510 m. Legends say that Indian scholar Mahasiddhacarya Naropa (956-1041 CE), allegedly caused a lake which filled the valley to dry up and founded Lamayuru Monastery. The oldest surviving building at Lamayuru is a temple called Seng-ge-sgang, at the southern end of the Lamayuru rock, which is attributed to the famous builder-monk Rinchen Zangpo (958-1055 CE). Rinchen Zangpo was charged by the king of Ladakh to build 108 gompas, and certainly many gompas in Ladakh, Spiti and the surrounding regions, date from his time. It is about 120 Kms. from Leh.

Lamayuru or Yuru Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Lamayouro, [Leh district]], India. It is situated on the Srinagar-Leh highway 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) east of the Fotu La at a height of 3,510 metres (11,520 ft).
A. H. Francke states that, according to popular tradition, it was originally the foremost Bon monastery in Ladakh; its name means sauwastika and is a popular symbol in Bon for eternity. Yungdrung is the name of the most popular school of Bon. It is currently affiliated with the Drikung Kagyu school of Buddhism.
The Drikung history states that the Indian scholar Naropa (956-1041 CE) allegedly caused a lake which filled the valley to dry up and founded Lamayuru Monastery. The oldest surviving building at Lamayuru is a temple called Seng-ge-sgang, at the southern end of the Lamayuru rock, which is attributed to the famous builder-monk Rinchen Zangpo (958-1055 CE). Rinchen Zangpo was charged by the king of Ladakh to build 108 gompas, and certainly many gompas in Ladakh, Spiti Valley and the surrounding regions, date from his time.
The oldest gompas, those dating from Rinchen-zang-po's time — Alchi and Lamayuru, and the less accessible Wanla, Mang-gyu and Sumda — belonged at the time of their foundation to none of these Tibetan schools, whose establishment they antedate. They were at some stage taken over by the Ka-dam-pa, and when it fell into decline they were taken over again, this time mostly by the Ge-lugs-pa. The exception was Lamayuru, which was for some reason claimed by the Dri-gung-pa
The gompa consisted originally of five buildings, and some remains of the four corner buildings can still be seen.
Lamayuru is one of the largest and oldest gompas in Ladakh, with a population of around 150 permanent monks resident. It has, in the past, housed up to 400 monks, many of which are now based in gompas in surrounding villages.
Lamayuru is host to two annual masked dance festivals in the second and fifth months of the Tibetan lunar calendar, when all the monks from these surrounding gompas gather together to pray.

Lamayuru Monastery, Ladakh
Here is a very short edited clip of the videos I took in July this year during my maiden visit to Ladakh. I visited Lamayuru Monastery & the monastic school. I volunteered for an organisation and with their team I travelled to Lamayuru to teach board games to children. Lamayuru or Yuru Gompa is a Tibetan Buddhist Gompa in Kargil District, Western Ladakh, India, situated on the Srinagar - Kargil - Leh road 15 km east of the Fotu La, at a height of 3,510 m.
A Lamayuru Day Hike and Trek Information, Ladakh
It is possible to trek up and over the Pringkitila Pass to Wanla in 3-5 hours from Lamayuru. Wanla then becomes the spot where many treks begin with different degrees of difficulty and head in all directions.
We began our day by brushing off bits of plaster that fell on us during the night at the Moonland Hotel and slowly made our way up to the pass with no intention of actually ending in Wanla, just a pleasant day hike. This video will give information about trekking and/or hiking in this particular area of Ladakh....

Lamayuru Gompa - Place of Freedom Video Details
This is the Lamayuru motorcycle Ride. The ride started in the Tibetan town of Leh. The adventure takes us to the 10th century Lamayuru Monastery, the oldest in Ledak, India
A flat tire on a rental motorcycle is no surprise. But repair facilities are always available in India.
We took a short side trip to visit the Alchi Monastary (1000 AD).
Prayer Wheels were a novelty.
Street cleaners here consisted of local women, with children attached, who literally sweep the road with straw brooms.
Most of the road is so narrow that there are no passing lanes which doesn’t detour the truck drivers. I think they’re all crazy.
Late in the day we reached Lamayuru Gompa, 1055 CE.
The next day we explored the monastery. The gompa belongs to Kyanga Tibetan order. It was once called the Tharpaling or “place of freedom” because it gave shelter to all criminals and sinners Think in terms of an anti-pole to Guantanamo Bay.
Lamayuru is a picture perfect place that still welcomes all, even dusty Westerners. I guess it still is a place of freedom.
