Lamlifew Indigneous Peoples Integrated School
Lamlifew Indigenous Peoples Integrated School in Datal Tampal, Malungon, Sarangani Province is one of the beneficiaries for the second 5-Year Mindanao Outreach (2013-2017) under the GFI Library Development & Educational Resource Assistance Program (LDERA). The school was recommended by the late Helen Lumbos because it was her dream for the students in their community to have a reading center with available educational resources. She coordinated with the School Principal Mr. Ireneo Caya and the school has been a pro-active partner for this initiative.
Blaan is one of the 110 Indigenous Peoples groups of the Philippines located in south central Mindanao. The music used for this video is one original Blaan song composition Dwata Falningem asking God to listen to His children and the desires of their heart.

Kalyak Blaan Care Group President, Arthur Dulo Gulili
Sharing parts of the Mabal Tabih culture, Blaan embroidery, Blaan beaded accessories by Arthur Dulo Gulili (aka Jao Dudez Facebook name). He is the grandson of Bai Yabing Masalon Dulo and President of Kalyak Blaan Care Group. This video documentation was narrated in Blaan and was tranlated by me as part of the technical assistance of the KafyeBlaan Empowerment, Inc. to the Kalyak Blaan Care Group.
“In the beginning, the Blaans only use this Tabih as clothing (Saul) and for females as Dafeng (tubular skirt). Some also used this as blanket. Nowadays, here in Amgu-o, Landan, South Cotabato, there is only one family that this tradition is kept alive…the family of Yabing Masalon Dulo. She is an active Mabal Tabih (ikat weaver) here in Amgu-o. Here is one Tabih am showing you which we called as Tabih Amlatoh but the cultural master is insisting that we need to start calling it as Tabih Tinéh because it is not good to always call it by its sacred name. This Tabih Amlatoh is the most priced among all Blaan Tabih designs. Of all designs, this Tabih Amlatoh is the most difficult to do. This the masterpiece from all her Tabih works. This is how it looks and this is how wide it is. Second Tabih is called Tabih Aftarang. We always asked the master designer why she loves to do this designs… looking like crocodile and alligator. She explains that because this crocodile and alligator designs have nice patterns just like when you look at these creatures when they are crawling on the ground. This is somewhat similar to the Tabih Amlatoh but with red patterns on both sides. This 3rd one is called Tabih Lugob which has three distinctive patterns in the middle. There is more red colors here than black textile colors. This fourth design is called Tabih Fule (Red Tabih although it looks like purple). The alligator pattern is also seen in this design. To my back is the Tabih Gnandong done by the master weaver when she was just 14 years old. You can see that there are more black parts than red. This is very old. The other one of this kind is now in the National Museum…a foreigner bought it and then donated to the National Museum.
To make the Tabih shiny and smooth, the shell is used to polish (ironing). This one is called “Talu” in Blaan or bees wax so that it is easier to connect/tie both ends of the abaca and also make the finished Tabih shiny during polishing/ironing. There are two colors, this light colored and the dark colored Talu. The raw material used for all the Tabih is called “lutay” or abaca. To be able to have one Tabih takes a lot of processes. Each strand is meticulously chosen, tied from one end to another to produce a long strand. I you do not know how to tie the strands properly, you cannot produce the Tabih. So, you really need to take time to choose strands to be connected with each other. This process is called “Tambong”. So, what I shared are basics of how to have a Tabih and the difficulties to make one.
In 2014, we organized ourselves into a group called Kalyak Blaan Care Group. We wanted to revive our cultural materials (Kalyak) because we are getting alarmed as well that these cultural traditions are slowly going away with the passing of our old folks. One thing we do as a project is the making of clothing like this beaded female blouse. We only did not focus on the revival/skills transfer of Mabal Tabih but also with the distinctive Blaan embroidery. This blouse is called Albong Sanlah (beaded embroidery). This other blouse (male vest) is with cross-stitched embroidery (Ansif). In this Albong Ansif, we use threads. This traditional comb is also part of our project. This is what we called as “Skad Blaan” or comb. We used hard wood for the base of the comb. Then we also make Slah Blaan because we used beads. - Arthur Dulo Gulili aka Jao Dudez
