LaNana Creek Part 2
THE LANANA CREEK TRAIL
The LaNana Creek Trail began as a project of Nacogdoches Texas Sesquicentennial in
1966. The purpose was to construct a 2-1/2 mile hiking-biking path extending from Main Street north to
East Austin Street. The Sesquicentennial Committee's plan was to preserve, beautify, and utilize the flood banks of LaNana Creek for the people of Nacogdoches, and to leave the LaNana Creek Trail as a lasting remembrance of Texas 150th birthday.
The trail was once a pathway for Nacogdoches Indians, a tribe of the Caddo Confederacy who
Who lived on the high ground between LaNana and Banita creeks. Nacogdoches means The place that is high in the Caddo language. Spanish colonials walked the trail along the creek and built their town of Nacogdoches between the two creeks. The trail is now in the most historic area of old Nacogdoches. Near the beginning of The Trail is Camino Real Park are the homes of Haden Edwards and Adolphus Sterne, the New Orleans Greys' campground, Oak Grove Cemetery, Zion Hill Cemetery, and the Holy Springs of Father Margil.
The LaNana Creek Trail runs north from Camino Real through Margil Park and the Eyes of Father Margil. The trail follows LaNana Creek through Pecan Acres Park to the Stephen F. Austin State University campus. The SFA Mast Arboretum and Tucker Woods are on university land. The trail ends in the north at Jimmy Hinds Park on East Austin Street.
LaNana Creek Trail was cleared and constructed by volunteers under committee guidance of F.E. Abernathy, Chairman Archie McDonald, John Anderson, and Carroll Schoenewolf.

JIMMY HINDS PARK & PINEY WOODS NATIVE PLANT CENTER
The LaNana Creek Trail's North end begins with the Jimmy Hinds Park. Jimmy Hinds was an agriculture teacher at SFA, who used this place of LaNana Creek bottomland for a garden before World War II. The family's generosity has let this special woodland treasure be something for all to enjoy.
The Piney Woods Native Plant Center, or Tucker Woods until recently, used to be called the Blount Woods in early times, because the thirty-nine wooded acres on LaNana Creek belonged to Stephen Blount. Mrs. Edward Blount Tucker inherited the woods from her father and built the Tucker House on the property in the late 1930's. SFA bought the Tucker estate from the heirs in 1986, and in 2000 SFA officially designated the property as the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, only the third garden to be affiliated with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.
The Pineywoods Native Plant Center is filled with old growth hickory, sweetgum, red oaks, and many of the creek bottom trees of East Texas. This patriarch forest was thinned dramatically by a twister that came through in 1999 and by droughts in 1997-2000. In 1991, the LaNana Creek Trail volunteers began clearing the path through the briars, brush, and privet hedge that grew along the creek bank and under the forest canopy. The LaNana Creek Trail through the Tucker Woods was finished in 1993. In 1994 an Eagle Scout project built a walkway across a creek drain and swamp, and another trail was cut from the LaNana Creek Trail west to Raguet Street. This was called the Tucker Woods Trail.
The Tucker Woods are now and forever more the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, a university resource directed by SFA Professors James Kroll of the College of Forestry and Dave Creech of the SFA Mast Arboretum.

SFA Nacogdoches trails on a cyclocross
These were the trails that gave me the bug. Short but sweet. Carved into the side of a big hill right next to campus (Starr and University) there are plenty of amenities and restaurants within a few miles. The trails are largely a climb up on an easy twisty trail for a few minutes and then choose from 4 different ones to go down. Rinse, repeat.

Ghost Trail Movie 25
Where the Ghosts of Nacogdoches Historic Trail follows Banita Creek, it is easy to see how important even a small water course can be. Here we see how the creek had drained most of the land and how its flood plain has conserved the soil and moisture to nourish the trees and wild crops which feed a variety of creatures. Many of the native plants and animals have been lost or driven away by the process of building a modern town. But living things respond with vigor when they have a chance. By saving the natural area, in the midst of our city, we have a chance to watch and enjoy learning what nature can do. This natural area was the home place of Charlotte Baker Montegomery, a noted author and animal welfare advocate. The property is dedicated to the preservation of plants and animals and their habitats in their natural state. Such areas are important and needed in cities as a refuge for wildlife living in a otherwise hostile environment. While hiking through this natural area please disrupt as little as possible. Do not disturb wildlife or plants. Whenever possible, avoid any conduct that would impact negatively on the ecology of the area.

Ghost Trail Movie 31
Los Ojos de Padre Margil, The Eyes of Father Margil—Father Antonio Margil de Jesus was padre to the Mission Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, early in the 17th century. The legendary Father is said to have saved Nacogdoches from a terrible drought after prayer, when he struck a rock two times and commanded water to flow opening twin springs. This approximates the location of the legendary twin springs opened by Father Margil.

The building was the home site of John S. Roberts, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and later was the site of an old Texas café. One of Nacogdoches legends has Bonnie Parker (Bonnie and Clyde) working here as a waitress before she met Clyde Barrow.
