Lancaster, or is a city and the county town of Lancashire, England. It is situated on the River Lune. Long existing as a commercial, cultural and educational centre, Lancaster is the settlement that gives Lancashire its name. Lancaster has several unique ties to the British monarchy; the House of Lancaster was a branch of the English royal family, whilst the Duchy of Lancaster holds large estates on behalf of Elizabeth II, who herself is also the Duke of Lancaster in her capacity as monarch.
Lancaster was granted city status in 1937 for its long association with the crown and because it was the county town of the King's Duchy of Lancaster. With its history based on its port and canal, Lancaster is an ancient settlement, dominated by Lancaster Castle, Lancaster Priory Church and the Ashton Memorial. It is also home to the campus-based Lancaster University and a campus of the University of Cumbria.
Lancaster is the most northerly city in Lancashire, located three miles 4.8 km inland from Morecambe Bay. The city is located on the River Lune (from which it derives its name), and the Lancaster Canal.
The M6 motorway passes to the east of Lancaster, with junctions 33 and 34 to the south and north respectively. Lancaster is served by the West Coast Main Line which runs through Lancaster railway station. This station was formerly named Lancaster Castle railway station in order to differentiate it from Lancaster Green Ayre railway station on the Leeds–Morecambe line, which closed in 1966. The main bus operator in Lancaster is Stagecoach, which operates over thirty services from Lancaster Bus Station to Lancaster and Morecambe as well as frequent services in Lancashire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester and services throughout the North West of England. The Lancaster Canal and River Lune also pass through the city. The nearest airports are Manchester Airport, Liverpool Airport and, until October 2014, Blackpool International Airport.

Lancaster was once known as the ‘hanging town’ and later earned a reputation for ‘lunatics and linoleum’. All that has changed. The ‘lunatic asylum’ of Moor Hospital, where Alan Bennett’s mother was treated, is now luxury flats. The lino industry is no more. It’s still a great place to ‘hang’ but not literally, thankfully. Now the city of just 46,000 has a more tourist-friendly strapline: ‘Small city big story.’
Lancaster Castle
Dating back 1,000 years, this hilltop grade I-listed fortress was a prison for centuries. Outside London, more people were hanged here than anywhere else in England, earning Lancaster the sobriquet of ‘the hanging town’. You no longer need to be a criminal to visit. Coffee quarter
J.Atkinson & Co coffee roasters, established in 1837, claims to be the city’s oldest business. New owners are injecting the city with a caffeine buzz. Their two cafes, The Hall and The Music Room are especially popular. Upcycled, vintage and ‘hipster’ - but without silly beards. The Hall won ‘best flat white in the UK’ in 2013. thecoffeehopper.com

There are some 50 miles of traffic-free cycleways in and around Lancaster. Lancaster to Morecambe promenade is just three miles or follow the River Lune on a tarmac, car-free cycle path from Glasson Dock to the Forest of Bowland AONB and the Crook O' Lune, a bend in the river, painted by JMW Turner. celebratingcycling.org
Ashton Memorial, Williamson Park
This Edwardian Baroque memorial, like a mini St Paul’s high on a hill, dominates Lancaster’s skyline. 150ft tall, the ‘jelly mould’ was commissioned by Lancaster’s ‘Lino King’, Lord Ashton. Legend has it that he commissioned the memorial to honour his late wife but before it was completed he’d remarried. Awkward. There are fine views to the coast. lancaster.gov.uk
Maritime Museum
Lancaster was once among the five busiest ports in Britain. Tall ships carrying sugar, spices, tea and coffee sailed up the River Lune into the city. The colonnaded customs house, a fine Georgian building, is now a maritime museum that also tells of the slave trade. lancashire.gov.uk
Judge’s Lodgings
Originally home to a keeper of Lancaster Castle who was a notorious witch hunter, this grand house is the oldest in Lancaster, with parts dating to 1550. Between 1776 and 1975 judges visiting the court at nearby Lancaster Castle lodged here. Now it’s a museum with a renowned collection of Gillow furniture. lancashire.gov.uk

R1155 Lancaster bomber receiver
The R1155 was one of the radio receivers fitted in British bombers such as the Avro Lancaster and the Handley Page Halifax during WWII. After the war thousands of them were released into the surplus market and bought by radio amateurs. Many still survive today, such as this example that has a built-in power supply and an audio amplifier.

today I wanted to do something that I've wanted to do for a long time and also it gave me a chance to test my new camera from Kandao call The Qoocam
I start up by the memorial that is to recognise the slaves that died in Lancaster after they were brought in to Customs House which is just down the road.
there's some names of the slaves from Africa that were brought to Lancaster on the side of the memorial and even some dot dot dot just in case there's more slaves to be added to the memorial
you'll have to excuse the noise of the trucks and skip lorries that are going down the road because that happens all the time in Lancaster especially on this road which leads to the skip dumping place. I feel sorry for the people in the new flats hear that thought they was getting a part Riverside apartment because they have to listen to this crap all day long every single day and it's been like that since I moved here over 10 years ago!
anyway I'm going down to the Customs House which was built in 1780 then it changed to a warehouse called bruntons warehouse and then finally it was turned into the Maritime Museum
we have a look all around the Maritime Museum and I even managed to get up some stairs without falling down them again so yay me!
come with me as I look around the Maritime Museum and look at the exhibits and I think I can come back here again to have a look around in a more relaxed state and perhaps even bring you a long and read some of the stuff because it looks really interesting
and besides I get in for free because I'm a local resident I just got to make sure I bring my walking stick next time so is not so hard to move around

The Royal Air Force (RAF) is the United Kingdom's aerial warfare force. Formed towards the end of the First World War on 1 April 1918,[3] it is the oldest independent air force in the world.[4] Following victory over the Central Powers in 1918 the RAF emerged as, at the time, the largest air force in the world.[5] Since its formation, the RAF has taken a significant role in British military history, in particular, playing a large part in the Second World War where it fought its most famous campaign, the Battle of Britain.[6]
The RAF's mission is to support the objectives of the British Ministry of Defence (MoD), which are to provide the capabilities needed: to ensure the security and defence of the United Kingdom and overseas territories, including against terrorism; to support the Government’s foreign policy objectives particularly in promoting international peace and security.[1] The RAF describe its mission statement as ... [to provide] An agile, adaptable and capable Air Force that, person for person, is second to none, and that makes a decisive air power contribution in support of the UK Defence Mission.[7] The mission statement is supported by the RAF's definition of air power, which guides its strategy. Air power is defined as: The ability to project power from the air and space to influence the behaviour of people or the course of events.[8]
Today the Royal Air Force maintains an operational fleet of various types of aircraft,[9] described by the RAF as being leading-edge in terms of technology.[10] This largely consists of fixed-wing aircraft, including: fighter and strike aircraft, airborne early warning and control aircraft, ISTAR and SIGINT aircraft, aerial refueling aircraft and strategic and tactical transport aircraft. The majority of the RAF's rotary-wing aircraft form part of the tri-service Joint Helicopter Command in support of ground forces. Most of the RAF's aircraft and personnel are based in the UK, with many others serving on operations (principally Afghanistan) or at long-established overseas bases (Ascension Island, Cyprus, Gibraltar, and the Falkland Islands). Although the RAF is the principal British air power arm, the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm and the British Army's Army Air Corps also deliver air power which is integrated into the maritime, littoral and land environments.

Origins[edit]
While the British were not the first to make use of heavier-than-air military aircraft, the RAF is the world's oldest independent air force: that is, the first air force to become independent of army or navy control.[4] It was founded on 1 April 1918, with headquarters located in the former Hotel Cecil, during the First World War, by the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). At that time it was the largest air force in the world. After the war, the service was drastically cut and its inter-war years were relatively quiet, with the RAF taking responsibility for the control of Iraq and executing a number of minor actions in other parts of the British Empire. The RAF's naval aviation branch, the Fleet Air Arm, was founded in 1924 but handed over to Admiralty control on 24 May 1939.
The RAF developed the doctrine of strategic bombing which led to the construction of long-range bombers and became its main bombing strategy in the Second World War.[11]

The RAF underwent rapid expansion prior to and during the Second World War. Under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan of December 1939, the air forces of British Commonwealth countries trained and formed Article XV squadrons for service with RAF formations. Many individual personnel from these countries, and exiles from occupied Europe, also served with RAF squadrons. By the end of the war the Royal Canadian Air Force had contributed more than 30 squadrons to serve in RAF formations, similarly, approximately a quarter of Bomber Command's personnel were Canadian.[12] Additionally, the Royal Australian Air Force represented around nine percent of all RAF personnel who served in the European and Mediterranean theaters.[13]

In the Battle of Britain in 1940, the RAF (supplemented by 2 Fleet Air Arm Squadrons, Polish, Czecho-Slovak and other multinational pilots and ground personnel) defended the skies over Britain against the numerically superior German Luftwaffe. In what is perhaps the most prolonged and complicated air campaign in history, the Battle of Britain contributed significantly to the delay and subsequent indefinite postponement of Hitler's plans for anvasion of the United Kingdom (Operation Sealion). I had the pleasure of going to the Bomber Command Museum in Nanton, Alberta! They brought the beautiful Avro Lancaster Mk. X out of her hanger and ran all four Rolls-Royce Merlin 224, 12 cylinder 60 degrees vee-type liquid cooled engines
with two stage superchargers. SO COOL!

Unboxing the United Hobbies Lancaster
My parcel from UnitedHobbies, containing the Avro Lancaster, was badly bashed up on arrival. Belgian post told me I could not refuse the package because it was opened by the customs (for which I had to pay 50 EUR extra too). So when opening the package, I found one wing to be badly damaged. The bomb and fuselage were also damaged.
Now they're trying to find out who can be blamed and who is going to pay. A fight between UH and Belgian post ?? I hope to get a new wing at least...

Had a walk around Lancaster museum and took a look at the exhibits and artwork that was for sale.
It's a lovely place in the market square area, free to go in and look too!
There was some art on display today, some great scenes from around Morecambe and Lancaster areas.
