The Landhaus - located in the Herrengasse in Graz in Styria, Austria - is the headquarter of the Styrian Provincial Government. It is considered one of the most important Renaissance buildings in Central Europe. Of particular interest is the arcade court inside.
In the same building you find the Landeszeughaus – the armory. It was used as central arsenal during the Turkish wars. Today it is part of the Universalmuseum Joanneum, the second largest museum in Austria. The 32,000 exhibits, spread over four floors, suffice to equip 16,000 men with the weapons from the 16th to 18th century.
At the beginning of the Turkish wars, Inner Austria itself was responsible for the security of borders, which meant great sacrifices and financial expenses for the population. In exchange, the local defense industry experienced a great upswing. Later the emperor took over the safeguarding and received the required means from the imperial State. However, the prerequisite for this assistance was that a substantial part of the weapons was delivered from the countries of the empire. At that time many of the weapons were manufactured in Nuremberg, Augsburg and Innsbruck. Later, Maria Theresa wanted to dissolve the armory to regulate the arming in Vienna centrally. That this unique testimony of medieval warfare remained unchanged we have to owe the intensive requests of the inhabitants of Graz at that time.

In der Herrengasse in Graz in der Steiermark in Österreich befindet sich das Landhaus, Sitz der steirischen Landesregierung. Es gilt als eines der bedeutendsten Renaissancegebäude Mitteleuropas. Besonders sehenswert ist der Arkadenhof im Inneren.
Im gleichen Gebäude ist das Landeszeughaus, zentrales Arsenal zur Zeit der Türkenkriege, untergebracht. Heute ist es Bestandteil des Universalmuseums Joanneum, dem zweitgrößten Museum Österreichs. Die 32.000 Exponate, verteilt auf vier Stockwerke, reichen um 16.000 Mann mit den hier gelagerten Waffen aus dem 16. bis 18. Jahrhundert auszustatten.
Am Beginn der Türkenkriege war Innerösterreich noch selbst für die Sicherung der Grenzen zuständig, für die Bevölkerung bedeutete dies große Opfer und finanzielle Aufwendungen. Dafür erlebte die lokale Rüstungsindustrie einen großen Aufschwung. Später übernahm der Kaiser die Sicherung und erhielt von den Reichsständen im Rahmen der Reichshilfe die benötigten Mittel. Voraussetzung für diese Hilfe aber war, dass ein wesentlicher Teil der Waffen aus den Reichländern geliefert wurden. Viele der Waffen wurden in jener Zeit in Nürnberg, Augsburg und Innsbruck gefertigt. Später wollte Maria Theresia das Zeughaus auflösen, um die Bewaffnung zentral in Wien zu regeln. Nur den intensiven Bitten der Grazer ist es zu verdanken, dass dieses einzigartige Zeugnis mittelalterlicher Kriegsführung erhalten blieb.

Das Landeszeughaus gilt als die größte erhaltene historische Waffenkammer der Welt.
Die Sammlung des Landeszeughauses umfasst Rüstungen und Waffen aus der Zeit vom 15. bis zum 18. Jahrhundert.
Um 1700 erreichte die Zahl der zum Zeughaus gehörigen Kriegsgeräte mit beinahe 190.000 Stück einen Höhepunkt.
Heute lagern rund 32.000 Harnische, Feuerwaffen und Kanonen, Stangen-, Hieb- und Stichwaffen, Kugelzangen und Pulverhörner u. ä. auf vier Etagen und rund 2.000 Quadratmetern Fläche.
Mit rund 13.400 Stück ist die Sammlung der Handfeuerwaffen mit Zubehör die umfangreichste des Landeszeughauses. Sie zählt 3.867 Gewehre mit Lunten-, Luntenschnapp-, Perkussions-, Rad- sowie Steinschlössern, 4.259 Pistolen mit Rad-, Perkussions- und Steinschlössern sowie diverses Zubehör.
Der Sammlungsbereich der Artillerie umfasst 704 Stück: Doppelhaken mit Kombinations-, Lunten- und Radschlössern, Mörser, Kanonen, Falkonette sowie diverses Zubehör.
Bei den 5.395 im Landeszeughaus eingelagerten Stangenwaffen handelt es sich vorwiegend um Helmbarten und Spieße.
Die Sammlung der Schutzwaffen ermöglicht uns heute nachzuvollziehen, wie sich Soldaten im Kriegseinsatz schützen konnten. Diese dienten zum einen den Fußsoldaten (Büchsenschützen, Landsknechte), zum anderen den Offizieren und adeligen Truppenführern (schwere Reiter, Husaren, Arkebusierreiter). Das Landeszeughaus beherbergt 3.844 Objekte.

Bis heute sind die Kapuziner die Hüter jener Gruft, in welcher die Kaiser des Hauses Habsburg beigesetzt wurden; 138 Personen, darunter 12 Kaiser und 19 Kaiserinnen. Die kunstvollen Sarkophage.
