Landmannalaugar Hot Springs Iceland
Landmannalaugar is a geothermal hot spot of stunning and unique beauty in the heart of Iceland's southern Highlands. All summer long, it is one of the most popular hiking destinations-- either over one day or several -- and an ideal place to soak oneself in the hot springs after adventurous excursions in the Icelandic wild.
Landmannalaugar lies beside Laugahraun lava field, a sweeping expanse of dried magma which originally formed in an eruption in 1477. The greater area is made up of windswept rhyolite mountains, a rock that comes in different shapes of red, pink and golden yellow..
Historically the site was best known for its natural geothermal baths, hence its name - meaning the People's Pools. For centuries, it served as an area of shelter and respite for weary travellers who use these soothing springs as a means to relax after tiring excursions.
Originally, those attending were settlers crossing the barren highlands, herding sheep or traversing the country.
Today, visitors to the Highlands should always bring a swimsuit and towel, just in case one of these naturally occurring hot pools should crop up along the hiking trail.
The most popular road leading to Landmannalaugar, Sigölduleið, has such springs, and takes you past multiple stunning natural features, including Bláhylur lake, a magnificent body of water nestled in a dormant volcanic crater.

Rope tow rescue from Iceland river near Landmannalaugar
We noticed the blue 4-wheel vehicle moments before it entered into a deeper part of the river as it seemed to be driving down the river a bit fast for the conditions. Everyone else was crossing the river. Luckily for these guys, Icelandic SAR was close by to pull them out. I was a bit worried about the rope snapping and hitting the guy on the tow truck.

GULLFOSS Waterfall | Driving F - Roads to LANDMANNALAUGAR Iceland Day 3
We started off our day at Gullfoss waterfall then continued our journey driving the F - Roads to get to Landmannalaugar! The safest route to take is from F 26 to F208 to F224. A 4x4 is highly recommended especially if you plan to cross the rivers close to Landmannalaugar.

The Landmannalaugar area is a popular tourist destination and hiking hub in Iceland 's highlands. The area displays a number of unusual geological elements, like the multicolored rhyolite mountains and expansive lava fields , not far from the service center. The many mountains in the surrounding area display a wide spectrum of colors including pink, brown, green, yellow, blue, purple, black, and white.

The BEST of Landmannalaugar | Mount Bláhnjúkur Iceland 4K
This was our last full day in Landmannalaugar and we decided to hike Mount Bláhnjúkur! You will see for yourself if this is the hike for you. We would say it's a moderate to difficult hike but really depends on your hiking level.
We are very excited to share this video with you as it contains I think our best drone shots to date!

Best Hiking in Landmannalaugar! | The Highlands of ICELAND 4K
It's our first full day in Landmannalaugar and the weather was not cooperating with us! That didn't stop us from getting out and hiking Mount Brennisteinsalda! This hike has to be one of the most scenic hikes we've done to date! The views and landscapes were just incredible it felt like we were on another planet! We highly recommend this hike if you are planning on going to Landmannalaugar and we hope this video gives you some better insight about the hike!
