Things to do in Cusco, Peru ???????? ATV tour of Maras Moray Salinas and self-guided hike downtown
There's no shortage of things to do in Cusco, so the Earth Unraveled team had some differing opinions on how to spend their final day in Cusco, Peru.
The great folks at Loki Travel were able to organize a last minute private tour for Mike & Mikey to see the Urubamba country side outside of Maras, Peru on a quad bike tour through. We also took the opportunity to skip a lot of the individual site walk-throughs and spend a lot more cruising the epic landscapes at full-speed on the ATVs.

0:32 - Church of Tiobamba
0:54 - Maras statue
1:44 - so this is what an Inca fridge looked like
Episode 47
0:32 - The old Spanish church of Tiobamba was our first stop. This seemingly abandoned church seems very out of place in the vast open landscape and is easily spotted from miles away.
0:54 - Maras salt mines (Salinas des Maras) are a series of steam ponds which have been in use by locals to collect and sell salt since the Inca times. Since we had such a small group, we opted to take a few of the less conventional trails. Much more narrow than the regular paths these typically reserved for hikers and donkeys.
1:18 - The small town of Maras, where we stopped for a local brunch, ironically contained a statue displaying all of our destinations for the day.
1:44 - This ancient structure helped the ancient inca people preserve their foods such as corn and potatoes grown in Moray by keeping them cool and dry in these refrigerators made of clay and running cool running over the top.
2:01 - Back in Cusco: Fil, Peter, Kevin and Robbie organized their own day-tour with a self-guided walk through the streets, starting in the historic section of Cusco (plaza des Armas) but ultimately venturing way off the beaten path to see the real lives of these modern-day Inca people of Peru

Hikes & Things to do in Cusco, Peru (incl. Machu Picchu, Lares Trek, Rainbow Mt, Humantay…)
I show you some of the best things to do in Cusco and the Cusco region with its many Inca sites and beautiful multi day treks in this episode from Peru in partnership with G Adventures.
➸ My Peru Guide:
➸ Lares Trek with G Adventures:
MY CAMERA EQUIPMENT
▸ Cam1:Sony RX 100 V
▸ Cam2:Sony A7 II
▸ Joby Gorillapod
▸ Audio Recorder: Zoom H2n
▸ SDHC Memory Card
▸ Waterproof Memory Card Case
▸ Backpack Osprey Farpoint 40
To produce this video I spent almost 2 weeks in the Cusco region in order to provide a wide selection of activities I recommend doing on your trip to Peru. Because it was my second time after my first visit in 2012 I chose to introduce an alternative Machu Picchu experience with the Lares Trek - for this part I worked together with G Adventures and decided to extend my stay to do all the other things independently.
Cusco and the area around is full of history and beautiful landscape which makes it worth it to spend about 1-2 weeks in the region. For your time you should definitely take on some day hikes or go for one of the multi day hikes which end up taking you to Machu Picchu. What many don’t know: a multi day hike to go to Machu Picchu is the most budget friendly option if you look at the price-value ratio!
The things to do in Cusco I covered here is a selection of my personal favorites and offers a good mix of historic sites, hikes (partially in very high altitude), food experiences and panoramic views which will leave you speechless. Moreover I also focussed on some community projects which are connected to G Adventures and their NGO Planeterra.
Things to do in Cusco featured in this episode:
- Old town of Cusco / Cuzco
- Saksaywaman / Sacsayhuaman
- La Cusquenita (restaurant)
- Barrio San Blas
- Barrio Ceviche (restaurant)
- San Pedro market
- Jack’s Cafe (restaurant)
- Rainbow mountain / Vinicunca
- Sacred Valley (part of G Adventures Lares Trek tour)
- Pisaq
- Ollantaytambo
- Parwa restaurant
- Lares trek
- train to Aguas Calientes
- Machu Picchu
- Humantay lake (first day of Salkantay trek)
About my Cooperation with G Adventures
For many years I was searching for a suitable partner who offers tours in South America which align with my style of traveling as well as my values. After many meetings I’m glad I found this partner with G Adventures who offer many adventurous tour packages for travelers like me…but who also care about the environment and local communities in order to execute sustainable tourism. I forced this cooperation because I like the products and the philosophy of the company. Nevertheless all opinions, recommendations and views are my own.

PERU DAY 2 - Sacred Valley of the Andes
On our second day in the mountain city of Cusco, we continue to acclimatize as we explore the Andes region. Sacred Valley - a valley where the Urubamba river flows, sacred because the soil here was very fertile allowing many different types of crops to be grown. Sacred because in one landscape, you can see river, mountain, and snow (snow capped mountains). We start training for our hike as the sites and ruins in this valley require A LOT OF CLIMBING.

Wild Watch Peru - Rainbow Moutain - 1 day trip from Cusco
Credits Louise Russier 2019
Wild Watch Peru does not only offers intense wildlife immersions to Manu National Park but also very private-tours to the magic Rainbow Mountain of Peru. Feedbacks from our travellers:
'The Rainbow Mountain tour we have had with WWP was way different than all the other tours that the agencies offer in Cusco. On our way to Rainbow Mountain; we have had the chance to stop at many places including some alpagas pastures, some charming villages and some outstanding landscapes' miradors. We departed at 7am in the morning (in contrast with the 4am wake-up that you see in all the other offers) so we got at the summit when all the big groups have left. The hike was easy and steady even though we are not this used to such hight. The tour also gave us the occasion to gaze at the many traditional clothes people wear in these remote areas of Peru. Luis, our guide was very knowledgable and helped us a lot understanding the local culture and wildlife. If you are looking for a real down to earth experience away from massive tourist offers, here you go!'

Cusco, Peru Day 1
This is a video of our first day in Cusco, Peru. Our adventures from the Airport to our tour.
Waqrapukara Trekking Day Tour, The Other wonder of Cusco
The tour to Waqrapukara trekking is one of the adventures in the region of Cusco little visited and explored. The expedition to Waqrapukara Inca site begins from the city of Cusco; We left at 5:00 am from the hotel heading south of Cusco.
#waqrapukaracusco #waqrapukaratrek #waqrapukarafullday
After the city of Cusipata, we turn right as we head towards the Pomacanchis lagoon. From Sangara you can go to Waqrapukara Cusco on a dirt road, the second access is through Pitumarca; Upon reaching the lagoon, you will walk to the sacred temple of the Inca site of Waqrapukara.
The most recommended option to enjoy a unique adventure in the Andes and the Apurímac Canyon is to enter the Acomayo trail through the community of Huascar and Campi, from Campi we continue the trip with our vehicle on a dirt road until we reach the Rinconada from the dirt road. From this place, we begin our adventure and expedition to the Waqrapukara tour.
It is 3 hours and 15 minutes of walking to reach the archaeological site. The panoramic views are spectacular every time we approach Waqrapukara Acos.
The whole route is semi-flat until the control of the National Institute of Culture of Cusco.
The Inca site of Waqrapukara Peru, at first sight, we will observe that it has shape and silhouette of the sphinx of Egypt but in the abstract; This photographic angle is impressive. The best views are from the front of the Qaqra Pukara. In the temple, there are Inca roads, gates, viewpoints, houses, sacred altars, and food deposits.
The return is being used in the same way, but in one sector, we take the road that goes to the community of Wayqui; This option is recommended to save time. From the detour, we will descend 1 hour to complete a two-hour walk until we reach Wayqui, in the Andean community of Wayqui, our vehicle will be waiting for us to take us back to the city of Cusco.
Waqrapukara Recommendations:
Bring plenty of water, mosquito repellent, waterproof clothing, warm clothing, walking shoes, trekking boots, and adventurous spirit. Requires a moderate physical state or little experience in trekking.

Humantay Lake Day Tour Cusco
Without a doubt, the Humantay lake in Cusco is one of the most impressive lakes in all of Peru and one the best places to visit in Cusco. Being located in front of the Humantay mountain and close to the Salkantay mountain as well, the lake has a beautiful location that attracts many trekkers.
As our Humantay lake day tour leaves from Cusco early in the morning, you will be one of the first travellers to get there. This allows you to enjoy this beautiful landscape almost for yourself before the large tourist groups arrive. Once you arrive at the lake, our guide will show you the best spots to take memorable photos.
Our day tour to the Humantay lake involves 1.5 - 2 hours of trekking until reaching the crystal-clear lake. As the lake is located at 4200 m, we recommend all of our travellers to get acclimated and stay in Cusco for at least 2 days before doing any kind of high altitude trek. This will help you not to get affected by the altitude sickness. You can find tips on how to avoid the altitude sickness here:
Are you ready to get to know one of the best places to visit in Cusco? With some luck, you might get to see the peak of the Salkantay mountain, Cusco’s second highest mountain (6271 m)!

7 Things To Do in Peru (That Aren't Machu Picchu)
7. Sandboarding and racing dune buggies in Huacachina
This hidden oasis provides ample opportunity for adrenaline-junkies and thrill seekers to explore. Just four hours south of Lima, travellers can begin their day by boarding down sand dunes or racing across the desert in dune buggies for a truly exhilarating experience.
6. Explore the Peruvian Amazon
Considered to be less popular than its Brazilian counterpart, the Peruvian Amazon is home to a diverse wildlife population and winding rivers that you need to visit while in Peru. To access the diverse jungle terrain, you can take a flight from the city of Puerto Maldonado with flights leaving daily from Cusco and Lima. And the good news? Tours through the Amazon on the Peru side are significantly cheaper – meaning you can save your dollars for a bonus round of pisco sours.
5. Go deep into Colca Canyon
When in Peru, make time to visit one of the deepest and most spectacular canyons in the world, the Colca Canyon. Accessible from Peru’s second largest city, Arequipa, the Colca Canyon is Peru’s third most-visited attraction yet many hikers seem to skip this impressive site. Don’t make the same mistake as those hikers and add a trip to the Colca Canyon to your itinerary. Also, if you’re still yet to be impressed, the Colca Canyon is actually twice as deep as the United States’ Grand Canyon. See for yourself how it compares.
4. Embrace the serenity of Lake Sandoval
Lake Sandoval is part of the Madre de Dios region of Peru, which is part of the Amazon basin. To reach this majestic site, you can start your hike near Mare de Dios River and marvel at the impressive wildlife including parrots, macaws and other exciting creatures. Once you arrive, you will be greeted by an unforgettable sunset.
3. Taste the mineral-rich salts of Maras
Just outside of Cusco you will find the town of Maras which is held in high esteem across the world for its impressive collection of salt mines that date back to the Inca times. Here, you will find thousands of salt pools that make up the hillside that build an intricate network of channels that feed spring water into the ponds. For a small fee, you can taste the warm water and sample some of the finest salt in the world. The mineral rich salt is great for cooking and is believed to help reduce stress.
2. Walk the streets of Arequipa
You’ve heard all about Cusco and Lima, but what do you really know about Arequipa? This city is filled with charming baroque architecture built from white volcanic stone. Surrounded by breathtaking volcanoes, Arequipa has well and truly earned its place as a UNESCO World Heritage destination.
1. Do as the Peruvians do in Huilloc
There’s a reason why we saved the best until the very end. To wrap up your time in Peru, there’s no better way to experience Peru than by immersing yourself in local culture. Make time for a visit to the Quechua village of Hilloc and learn more about the fine art weaving from the female villagers who have been perfecting the craft since a young age. Then, sit down for a pachamanca lunch where stones and grass are used to cook cuy (guinea pig), fava beans and potatoes using traditional cooking methods. The hospitality and generosity of the Quehchea villagers will leave you feeling humbled and grateful for the experience.
