Crossing the Landwasser Viaduct, Filisur, Switzerland
Short clip on the approach to and crossing the amazing Landwasser viaduct on the Albula line towards Filisur. Shot from a train conveying Glacier Express coaches. Note that photographer in the baggage car using flash... I wonder what he managed to get??
Unfortunately the drop window I used wouldn't go down far enough for me to hold the camera in such a way as to protect the microphone, so there is quite a bit of wind noise. Shot on the Canon EOS 5D Mark II camera, in failing light conditions, on 11th January 2009.

Journey on/Călătorie pe Landwasser Viaduct, Filisur, Switzerland
Just a closer look at the Landwasser Viaduct. It is located on the Chur to St.Moritz Albulabahn. These open-air carriages, a famous feature of the Rhatische Bahn (RhB)metre gauge network in the summer months, have no lights. On a network of metre-gauge lines through some extremely mountainous country, this is great fun in the many tunnels, some which are spirals.

The famous Landwasser Viaduct in Switzerland
The territory of Switzerland has many large areas that are covered with enormous mountains. Before the 19th century, this terrain made it very difficult to travel across the country. In addition to its challenging terrain, cold winters often create frequent and deep snowfall. Although beautiful, this makes travel of any kind quite a challenge.
The Swiss railway engineers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries had to be creative, innovative, and downright courageous to build a railway network as complex as required by the country's mountainous geography. A major limitation of rail transport is its sensitivity to grade changes. As such, engineers had to plan and construct many bridges and tunnels to cross rivers and canyons and to pass through mountains in order to keep railways as level as possible.
One of the most impressive feats was the construction of the Landwasser Viaduct on the Albula railway near Filisur village. It is a perfect example of the combination of bridge and tunnel construction so common throughout the country of Switzerland. Completed and operational by October 1902, this single track railway is one of the more famous in the world today. The Landwasser tunnel exits its mountain through a shear rock cliff. Engineers had to begin the viaduct starting at the end of this tunnel. The bridge stands at 213 feet at its tallest point. It has six arches, each spanning 65 feet in length. It was completed in a mere 13 months.

The Landwasser Viaduct became famous among engineers because of new techniques employed during its construction. Unlike arched bridges of the past, no scaffolding was used to build the pillars. Instead, steel towers were built and the limestone pillars were constructed around them. Wooden scaffolding was still used to construct the arches connecting the pillars together at their tops. The tunnel at the end of the viaduct was bored with drilling machines to a length of 709 feet. All totaled the viaduct required 12,033 cubic yards of masonry and cost CHF 280,000 (7.8 million in 2014 US Dollars). This bridge and tunnel were crucial in the completion of the Rhaetian Railway. Making travel from Zurich to Thusis and on to St. Moritz much more speedy and reliable.
This railway is arguably one of the most beautiful in the world. Passing through seemingly endless tunnels and over marvelous bridges, all the while surrounded by the natural beauty of the Alpine mountain range. Many mountain villages are serviced by this line, themselves adding to the beauty of the region. This railway was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in July 2008. The first railway to receive such an award.

The World Famous Landwasser Viaduct - UNESCO World Heritage Rhaetian Railway in Switzerland
This is a short coverage of the legendary and iconic Landwasser Viaduct in Switzerland during my recent trip there. This massive bridge is located near Filisur station of the Rhaetian Railway (known as the Rhätische Bahn locally). It is part of the Albula section which links the city of Chur and the popular ski resort of St. Moritz. It is a single meter gauge track viaduct, with 6 arches, the highest being 65 meters above the ground, and has a curve of radius 100 meters. Immediately after the curve heading towards St. Moritz, the viaduct directly goes into the Landwasser Tunnel, built into the sheer cliff face. The viaduct was said to be made without any scaffolding and was completed in 1902. All these features make it one of the most iconic structures of Swiss railway journeys.
There are 2 special trains with panoramic coaches that run on this route - the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express. However I did not travel on any of those trains. I took the regular Inter Regio service they had from Chur to St. Moritz and this turned out to be better since the windows open and I could get photos and videos without the reflection of the glass. The video opens with the scene of my train crossing this magnificent viaduct. You can notice how my train driver slowed down for the benefit of those people who were taking photos and videos. All drivers do not slow the train. The maximum speed limit on the bridge is 45 kmph.
There is a Landwasser Viaduct viewpoint which is located about 20 minutes walking distance away from Filisur Railway station. So few days later, I came back to Filisur station and went to the viewpoint. From there you can see the Landwasser Viaduct as well as the Schmittentobel Viaduct, which is another arched bridge towards the Chur side, about 35 meters high.
While waiting for the regular passenger trains, I also got to see a 2 wagon freight train passing over the viaduct, hauled by a Ge 6/6 II class locomotive. Then came the Inter Regio service in the uphill direction from Chur to St. Moritz. This was being hauled by a ABe 8/12 class EMU set (also known popularly as ‘Allegra’). After it crossed the service in the opposite direction at Filisur, the downhill train towards Chur made its presence felt as it rumbled across the bridge powered by a Ge 4/4 III class locomotive at the rear end of the train. From the path between the station and the viewpoint, I also saw a Bernina Express train with the panoramic coaches going towards Chur. That was also hauled by a ABe 8/12 class EMU, but from that place I could not see the Landwasser Viaduct. You can only see it crossing the Schmittentobel Viaduct and winding along the side of the mountain towards Chur.
I also wanted to go down into the valley and to another viewpoint on the other side of the mountain to take pictures and videos however I did not have the time to do so. This entire section of the railway line is a Unesco World Heritage railway along with the Bernina section which goes from St. Moritz across the Bernina Pass to the Italian town of Tirano. There are many more videos to come from this line. Stay tuned… Thank you!

The Landwasser Viaduct (German: Landwasserviadukt) is a single-track six-arched curved limestone railway viaduct. It spans the Landwasser between Schmitten and Filisur, in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland.
Designed by Alexander Acatos, it was built between 1901 and 1902 by Müller & Zeerleder for the Rhaetian Railway, which still owns and uses it today. A signature structure of the World Heritage-listed Albula Railway, it is 65 metres (213 ft) high, 136 metres (446 ft) long, and one of its ramps exits straight into the Landwasser Tunnel.
Filisur is an Alpine village and former municipality in the Albula Region in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. The village sits on a hillside with a view to the west where the two rivers Albula/Alvra from the Albula Pass and Landwasser from Davos meet. On 1 January 2018 the former municipalities of Bergün/Bravuogn and Filisur merged into the new municipality of Bergün Filisur.
