Langkawi, officially known as Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah (Malay: Langkawi Permata Kedah) is an archipelago of 104 islands in the Andaman Sea, some 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia. The islands are a part of the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thai border. On July 15, 2008, Sultan Abdul Halim of Kedah had consented to the change of name to Langkawi Permata Kedah in conjunction with his Golden Jubilee Celebration. By far the largest of the islands is the eponymous Pulau Langkawi with a population of some 64,792, the only other inhabited island being nearby Pulau Tuba. Langkawi is also an administrative district with the town of Kuah as largest town. Langkawi is a duty-free island.[1]
On June 1, 2007, Langkawi Island was given a World Geopark status by UNESCO.[5] Three of its main conservation areas in Langkawi Geopark are Machincang Cambrian Geoforest Park, Kilim Karst Geoforest Park and Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest park (Island of the Pregnant Maiden Lake). These three parks are the most popular tourism area within Langkawi Geopark.
The Kilim Karst Geoforest Park (The Kilim River)
This area actually consists of three river estuaries that stretch from the Kisap village approximately 10 km to Tanjung Rhu and they are all interconnected. They are rich in wildlife and tourists may see hairy nosed sea otters, brown winged kingfishers, monitor lizards and swimming macaque monkeys. Limestone, inherently porous, forms caves and there are several in the mangroves. One of Langkawi's natural beauty spots is the Pirate Lagoon just outside the river. Technically this is a collapsed cave (hong) consisting of a cave entrance from the sea emerging into a hidden lagoon with towering, limestone escarpments and smaller caves.[citation needed]
Langkawi Islands
There are two island areas: the Southern Islands, with a heavy tourist population and the islands to the north east which are more secluded without tourist traffic. Langun Island has a fresh-water lake like Pregnant Maiden Lake only without the tourists and has Sand Spit Beach on its south-facing orientation. Dendang Island next to it forms a bay popular with Langkawi sailing yacht tour operators who favour the area for its natural beauty and peace.[citation needed]
Some of the most popular beaches are Pantai Cenang, Pantai Tengah, Burau Bay, Pantai Kok, and Datai Bay. Pantai Cenang is a picturesque beach with seemingly unending stretches of fine white sand. It has numerous restaurants and bars for evening entertainment, several hosting live music and for watching the sun set. The beach is contoured by tall coconuts and casuarinas. Pantai Tengah is separated from Cenang by a small cape. It too faces the setting sun and is populated more by hotels than bars, making it less busy in the evening. Burau Bay, fringed by rocky outcrops, is the favorite place of migratory birds in Langkawi. Pantai Kok is a peaceful beach with the backdrop of limestone hills. Datai Bay has a combination of forests and sea. The milky beach is backed by lush forest.
The Langkawi Cable Car takes visitors up to the peak of Gunung Mat Chinchang, where the Langkawi Sky Bridge is located.
Tourists can enter the island via ferry from Kuala Perlis or by flight from Kuala Lumpur. AirAsia and Fireflyz provides budget connection to the island.

LANGKAWI HIGHLIGHT! Stunning Mangrove Forest + Durian Waterfall (WeWillNomad)
KILIM GEOPARK is a 100 km2 area is a nature reserve and a collection of geo-sites full of beautiful flora and fauna, and amazing geological formations like mammoth limestone rocks, fossils, caves, lagoons, beaches and seascapes. Administered and protected by the Peninsular Malaysia Forestry Department, it is part of the larger Langkawi Geopark and is quickly becoming one of the biggest hot spots of eco-tourism in the region.
There are plenty of package tours available and if you go for the cheapest (shared) option it will be around MYR80 per person including transfer from your hotel and lunch. The tour lasts about 5-6 hours from pick-up to drop-off.
Most of the tours will include the following: Fish feeding, Eagle feeding, Floating Fish Farm, Geoforest & Park, River cruise, Bat cave, Crocodile cave, Fossil Island, Swimming at private beach and lunch at a floating restaurant, most likely Hole In The Wall.
If you have the time when visiting Langkawi, we would recommend doing this. If you don’t want to spend quite as much, for about half the price you can just do an island-hopping boat trip.
If you want to do it DIY style (like we did), you can easily arrange a boat (with driver) from Tanjung Rhu, but be warned that the driver may not speak much English. Expect to pay between MYR180 to MYR250 for the boat. The trip will be a shortened version and will not include all the stops and activities but we found it to be a great alternative.
DURIAN PERANGIN WATERFALL:
Named after the Durian trees that can be found all around, this waterfall is just north of Kilim Village. After climbing a short flight of rugged stone stairs from the parking lot entrance and crossing a small suspension bridge, you will find the clearly marked pathway that leads to the main waterfall and swimming pond. The short climb is pretty steep but not difficult and there are many rock pools along the way to swim in. The view from the top is stunning and well worth the short climb! At least there are refreshments and ice-cream available back down at the bottom where you will also find many local families enjoying the lowest pool, especially over weekends. This is probably the most beautiful and easiest waterfall to access and also has a fair amount or water even in the dry season. It’s such fun to cool down in the fresh cool water and be able to get all the way to under the actual waterfall!

Mangrove Tour at Langkawi, Malaysia | Day Trip to Kilim Geoforest Park
This video will give you an idea about ‘what to expect’ from langkawi mangrove tour.
Langkawi is considered an ideal place by tourists, no matter to which part of the world they belong, and if you look at any langkawi “Must Do”or “Things to do” list, you will find “Mangrove Tour”. This mangrove tour at the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park is Langkawi’s one of the top tourist attractions.
But, before our trip to Malaysia, while me and my wife were doing research on Langkawi, we were so confused if we should include ‘Mangrove Tour’ in our ‘To-Do’ list. Because we have the world’s biggest mangrove forest in our country, Bangladesh, and we visited there many times, so we were unsure if it will be worth a day in our short langkawi trip.
If you are in confusion too, this video will help you to decide.
Tips:
▶ Don’t book the trip online (they are mostly overpriced), in langkawi streets you will find plenty of tourist information booths, buy from them. (They will also provide free hotel pick and drop)
▶ It’s better to compare price of at least 2-3 tour operators before finally book one
▶ Be careful when visiting the monkeys, the often jump on the boats and take tourist’s foods/camera etc.
▶ Half day trip (6 hour) is recommended

This is a video of one of the accommodations I was staying at on my trip to Langkawi. My overall experience was actually not that bad other than the mosquitoes you might run into. At the Gemalai you will stay in a hut surrounded by a rice paddy field where you will truly feel at peace and get an experience of a lifetime!! :D

В отличие от пляжей Тайланда на Лангкави практически нет длиннохвостых лодок которые загрязняют окружающую среду и вы не услышите непрекращающийся шум моторов лодок. Здесь пляжи и берег моря поддерживаются в порядке и чистоте. И вообще, весь остров произвел на нас отличные впечатления.
Расположенный на западной береговой линии Pantai Cenang и Pantai Tengah - красивая пляжная зона, Малайзия остров Лангкави. До международного аэропорта Лангкави можно добраться всего за 20 минут.

На Langkawi нет общественного транспорта, но все могут пользоваться такси или арендовать автомобиль, велосипед, скутер и т. д. Все такси имеют стандартную систему оплаты по фиксированной цене. Стоимость проезда с одной части острова на другую всегда равна одной и той же стандартной цене. Это конечно минус для туристов, посещающих остров.
Однако можно хорошо сэкономить, если воспользоваться для заказа такси приложением Play Market Uber Taxi. Это порядка на 30% ниже цен в турфирмах, на улице или отеле. Мы пользовались такси Uber для передвижения по острову неоднократно - дешево и очень удобно, ничего не переплачивали. Цена поездки равна цене в приложении ! В Куала Лумпур Uber Taxi тоже работают.
