Oslo Island Hopping: Hovedøya and Langøyene
The islands in the Oslo Fjord are easily reachable by ferry from Aker Brygge, in front of City Hall. In this video we visit two of the islands.
You pay for the ferry by using a regular public transportation ticket. If you already have a buss pass or Oslo Pass, you don't need to purchase an additional ticket.
The easiest way to purchase a public transportation ticket in Oslo is to use the Ruter Android or Iphone app:
However, only credit cards for certain countries are accepted. Check the section Overseas bank cards and phone numbers on the above webpage to see which countries this applies to.
Check for timetables in English.
Information from Visit Oslo is available at:
There are 11 large islands and a number of smaller islands in the inner Oslo Fjord. The most visited islands are Hovedøya, Gressholmen, and Langøyene.
Hovedøya is the largest and closest one to downtown Oslo. On Hovedøya there is at least one beach, and a number of flat rock (svaberg in Norwegian) swimming spots around the island. There is also at least one café and one restaurant on the island. The Revierhavnen Kro restaurant is located inside of the marina on the island, and you may need to reserve a table as the marina is normally not accessible to the public.
Langøyene is the large island that is the furthest away from Oslo. It has a long beach, and a large grass plain. This is the only island where overnight camping is allowed. Langøyene was originally two islands close together, but in the 40's and 50's, the sound between them was used as a landfill. Eventually the two islands got joined together into one big island by all the garbage. You should never drink the water from Langøyene because it is contaminated.
Gressholmen is an island in between the two others. It is often less crowded than the other major islands.
The ferry goes to other islands as well, but they have lots of vacation homes on them. Therefore, they are not that interesting to visit. These are Bleikøya,, Lindøya og Nakholmen.
To travel from Hovedøya to Langøyene and Gressholmen, you will have to go back to Aker Brygge to transfer to the other ferry route.

Oslo Travel Guide: Bogstadveien
1.2 km of designer shops, chain stores, pubs, restaurants, cafes, and lots more. This west side street is one of the most well known in Norway. It is known as a high-end shopping street, but there are also the usual chain stores, and some unique little gems. The lower part of the street is named Hedgehaugveien, but it changes name to Bogstadveien after a few blocks. The whole street is commonly referred to just as Bogstadveien.
Although Bogstadveien (Hedgehaugveien) begins at the northeast corner of the park that surrounds the Royal Palace, surprisingly few tourists visit Bogstadveien. That makes it a great alternative to Karl Johans gate, which is alright, but let's face it, it's mainly for the tourists.
There are too many shops and venues to list in this description, but most of them are shown in this map:
If you are looking particularly for Norwegian brands, you should check out the Moods of Norway Super Duper Store.
Bogstadveien ends at Majorstuen. Majorstuen is a major transportation hub, where all metro (T-bane) lines pass through. From there you can take the metro to downtown Oslo, or you can take the tram to Aker Brygge. There are also several bus routes that pass through here. The famous sculpture park, Vigelandsparken, is a 5-minute walk away from Majorstuen.

OsloFjords | Oslo Sightseeing | Life in Norway
The Oslofjord is an inlet in the south-east of Norway, stretching from an imaginary line between the Torbjørnskjær and Færder lighthouses and down to Langesund in the south to Oslo in the north. It is part of the Skagerrak strait, connecting the North Sea and the Kattegat sea area, which leads to the Baltic Sea. Each of the islands in the innermost part of the fjord has its own identity and distinguishing history. Among them are Hovedøya, Lindøya, Nakholmen, Bleikøya, Gressholmen, and Langøyene which can be reached with the Oslo-boats from Aker Brygge.
Oslo Travel Guide: Grünerløkka
Grünerløkka is one of the most interesting neighborhoods in Oslo, a hipster paradise a 10 minute walk from Central Station. Surprisingly few tourists visit Grünerløkka, and that's really a pity. Some of the nicest cafes and bars in Oslo are located in Grünerløkka, and it's a foodies paradise.
The main street of Grünerløkka is Thorvald Meyers gate. Thorvald Meyers gate starts where Ankerbrua brigde crosses Akerselva river, and ends at Birkelunden park in the north. Tram lines 11, 12 and 13 have three stops along Thorvald Meyers gate. From south to north:
Schous plass
Olaf Ryes plass
Birkelunden
Most of the shops, bars, restaurants and cafes on Grünerløkka are located around the Birkelunden and Olaf Ryes plass parks, and in the segment of Thorvald Meyers gate that is connecting them.
The street parallel to Thorvald Meyers gate, closer to Akerselva river, is Markveien. The lower parts of Markveien houses many quirky shops and vintage boutiques. There are also a few cafes and bars, like Espresso House and the Brewdog pub.
The area by Akerselva around Blå is a particularly beautiful part of the river. It is known for it's grafitti and industrial style. There are a few bars/cafes here, and Blå is also one of the best nightclubs in Oslo.
Also by Akerselva river is the Oslo Food Court (Mathallen). Unlike other shops in Oslo which must remain closed on Sundays, Mathallen is allowed to stay open.
Other options for Sunday shopping in Oslo are the flee markets at Birkelunden, and the smaller flee market outside of Blå, by the river. They are open mostly every Sunday, all year around.

NOt many tourist would know about this Island as the location to take the ferry is hidden and far from the Oslo's fort - Akershus festning - About 15 min walk into here. There is only ticket machine to buy the tickets here. The officers on board will not check the tickets but there is a tag machine to tag it if you want. Most norwegians would take this ferry off to this island for camping as it is the furthest island way from Oslo through this ferry. There is no residency on the Island , only campers. no entrance fee is needed to pay to camp here. Once enter, there is a Big field here and near the beach there is a bar for food and drinks and volley ball court . The sand on the beach isn't fine at all compare to the ones on Redang Island, Malaysia.Nevertheless, it's a nice place to camp yet campers have to be careful as there as cases to stolen equiptments reported.
