Pompeis Landing Pty Ltd, Protect Local Heritage Inc. Langwarrin Melbourne. Parks Victoria has management for this ex military reserved Crown Land. The Victorian Colonial Defence Force - 1886 gazette reserved over 500 acres for military purposes including military training. In 1985 the land was reserved (set aside) as Langwarrin Flora & Fauna Reserve. This massive land oasis located in Langwarrin Melbourne Victoria will in the future be at risk from housing development. Transcript - The Riverine Herald newspaper 30th March 1891 titled Life at Langwarrin. This year's camp presents a very different picture from that of last Easter. Then the camp extended from the station across and pretty well all over the military reserve. Now it is more congested, and the slope near the railway is unoccupied. The absence of the Mounted Rifles and Artillery accounts , to a great extent, for this re-arrangement head-quarters, too, with, of course, the telegraph office under our friend Hain, is no longer pitched on Tulloch Hill to the north, but occupies the site of last year's hospital by the side of the camp road , while the hospital was pitched further east along the road, and beyond the commissariat.....The total strength of the camp is 3,095 men, or nearly 1000 over last year's return- a big record considering that the Mounted Rifles and Artillery are not included. But the fact is that the battle boom is the only boom which has not suffered by the strike. Recruiting has come into such favor during the year that the standard has been raised from 5ft 6 inch height, and 33 inch chest to 5ft 7 inch height and 34 inch chest. The grand total of 3,095 is made up as follow: - Headquarters 21; 1st Regiment 709; 2nd Regiment 721; 3rd Regiment 311; 4th Regiment 277; Field Company, Victorian Engineers, 76; Ambulance 27; Commissariat and Transport 15; Mounted Rifles 16; Rangers 833; Senior Cadets 289. In this are not included the press, the camp tonsorial artists, Victorian Shavers.....The water supply is vastly improved and the ground is almost studded with
taps....Today the troops did a lot of useful work , such as battle formation signaling, outpost duty...
The Minister of Defence (Sir Frederick Sargood) and his secretary (Captain Collins) arrived in camp tonight and will be present at the review tomorrow. Only one sword is mightier than the Penno at Langwarrin, and thats Tulloch's. The hot weather of yesterday and today has not been without it's effect on the meat supply. A lot of meat which was carted in this morning was reported as unfit for human consumption and was returned. Night concerts of more or less harmony and sweetness have commenced in earnest. The classical influence of the chair of music occupied by Professor Frank Clark is clearly perceptible and audible. ....

Walkabout in the Pines Flora & Fauna Reserve.

Went walkabout 10 mins drive from home to the Pines Flora & Fauna Reserve walking tracks. This is a great place to take the dogs for a run, also a great place to go bike riding or just to go bushwalking like we did.
With spring fresh in the air, there were plenty of blooms & birds about to stop & admire at.
Situated in Frankston, it’s right as you enter the Mornington Peninsula & well worth a stop with the dogs or even without.

Bulldog ants fighting to the death in Langwarrin Reserve - Victoria, Australia
Myrmecia, often called bulldog ants, bull ants, inch ants, sergeant ants or jumper ants are endemic of Australia.
These ants are well known in Australia for their aggressive behaviour and powerful stings. The venom of these ants has the potential to induce anaphylactic shock in allergic sting victims.
Filmed in the Langwarrin Flora and Fauna Reserve (Victoria, Australia). These ants have highly developed visual acuity and awareness of their surroundings, tracking closely the whereabouts of any objects that we moved in a circle around them, their striking jaws always orientated towards potential threats. A truly charismatic animal!
