Finding a true Zhangfei on the streets of Langzhong
In this second part of our Langzhong series, Travelogue hosts Tianran He and Min-Zhui Lee are on another quest – this time, racing against each other on the hunt for traces of a legendary Chinese warrior. Zhang Fei lived and fought 1800 years ago, but in this ancient town, “TR” and “Zhui” discover that much more than his legacy has survived the centuries.

Ferry ride in Langzhong, Sichuan, China.
This is also from my recent trip to Langzhong, The Ferry only cost 2 RMB, or less than $0.35. Langzhong is surrounded by water on three sides, and was deemed to have great fengshui, when it was discovered, and a town was founded. An interesting feature is that there are four pagodas/temples surrounding the town, one to the north, one to the east(ish), and one to the south and east (approximately). The town was really cool because the local government had decided to preserve a part of the ancient town, so that the main street (when driving in) goes from ten story+ apartment complexes and business complexes, to one story traditional wooden homes. When we were there, many of the homes were being renovated or rebuilt and the town smelled beautiful from all the wood and fresh air!
