In this video I show leaving Kandy at 6am and going by tuk tuk to Sigiriya.
The ticket costs about 30USD and if you arrive mid morning then be prepared for a wait to buy the ticket.
The walk itself is plenty of stairs.

- charge your phone/camera batteries for all the views
At the end of this video I tried to go to the Dambulla temple, but it was more stairs and I was so shattered and did not make it. Which means I must return.

Vlog 10 brings us a bit more south to Colombo, Sri Lanka. This was my first time in Colombo and in Sri Lanka in general and I absolutely loved it out there!
I had heard about this beautiful country and its genuinely nice inhabitants. All I can say is, although we only spent a few hours in the capital, usually the most dense and hectic cities of a country, I definitely felt the positivity in this country. Also, the food was incredible.

Hello everyone.
Two years ago, I took part in a very cool project. I had been working with Princess Cruises for a few years as a freelancer photographer, and had covered the inauguration of their new ship the Majestic Princess in April of 2017. It was a big deal and a big ship.
A month and a half later, I embarked on the Majestic Princess for its maiden voyage. Starting in Rome, we followed the maritime Silk Road all the way to Shanghai. The route was absolutely incredible and I brought along my friend Iouri to assist me throughout, and to compose the music for the weekly videos I produced for Princess Cruises along the way.
This was an incredible trip and a wonderful personal experience to share with a good friend. A lot of travel, new cultures, new foods and new encounters along this hilarious trip. We were in our own bubbe for sure, and it was awesome.
I had produced three VLOGs back then while on ship, but the workload and limited internet access made it damn near impossible to keep up the pace. Without forgoing what little sleep I had that is.
I’ll be revisiting this journey and sharing this journey with you over the next few weeks (months?) looking back at the footage in the Time Capsule.

Video with images of Sigiriya an old town in the centre of Sri Lanka. A flat-topped rock formation rises two hundred metres above the surrounding plains. Soon after the introduction of Buddhism in the third century BC Buddhist monks found a shelter in the caves of the rock. In the fifth century AD king Kassapa fled to the Sigiriya rock formation from his capital Anuradhapura. He built a palace on the summit and donated land and labour to the monks as a reward for their support. During his reign Sigiriya was for a short period the capital of the Sinhalese kingdom. Later the palace was part of an important monastery. In the fourteenth century the monastery was abandoned and no longer inhabited.
The entire town with the palace on the rock in the centre was surrounded by a moat and a wall. Some parts still remain. A gate marks the entrance to the former palace complex of Sigiriya with water gardens, boulder gardens and terrace gardens. The lower situated water gardens have a symmetrical plan. A straight path leads along ponds, fountains, bridges, pavilions and trees. The boulder gardens are right at the foot of the rock. A path winds along natural boulders of different size. Approximately thirty of them had a meditation cave for the monks. Once the inner side of the caves was plastered and painted with geometric motives. In at least four caves are remnants of yellow and red frescoes from the fifth century.
Halfway up the rock there is a long, sheltered rock gallery with paintings of bare breasted women with flowers in the clouds. There used to be many hundreds of paintings covering a large part of the rock face. At present only twenty-two paintings remain. Some scientists presume the women are concubines of king Kassapa who offer flowers during a religious procession. Others claim that the women and the clouds are symbols of a residence for the gods. Other scientist think they are apsaras or celestial beings with flowers to honour kings and heroes. Surely apsaras are a common theme in Buddhist royal art in Asia. Without any doubt these delicate paintings with their realistic details added to the sacred status of the place. Possibly they gave splendour to the life at the royal court in the fifth century AD.
A narrow pathway leads to a platform with two large lion's paws from the fifth century AD. They were partly cut out of the rock and plastered with limestone. At one time a gigantic brick lion sat at this end of the rock. Depressions in the rock remind of the timber columns which supported the brick masonry. In the past a staircase between the lion's paws used to lead the visitors through its mouth up to the top of the rock. The giant lion used to remind the visitors that Buddha was the pride of the Sinhalese community and that his words were powerful like the roar of a lion. The lion was the mythological ancestor of the Sinhalese people. It also was a traditional symbol of the royal family in Sri Lanka. However the construction of the giant lion has disappeared with the exception of its claws and the staircase in between.
The top of the rock was once covered with buildings. They were built in the fifth century AD at different levels on the summit. They were part of the royal palace with magnificent views on the countryside below. Only the foundations remain today. The remnants of a royal throne suggest that there was a reception hall where the king received his guests. On a lower level is a pond which presumably was a cistern for drinking water. The pond was cut out of the rock. At both sides is a stone pathway.
A winding path down leads to what is claimed to be an audience hall at the foot of the rock. The audience hall had a throne cut out of the rock.
