Elephant riding Chiang Mai Thailand
We rode a 15 year old elephant (just an adolescent) at the Maetamann Elephant Camp in Chiang Mai followed by the rafting down the Ping River. The old city of Chiang Mai with its fascinating indigenous cultural identity such as diverse dialects, cuisine, architecture, traditional values, festivals, handicrafts and classical dances is a prime location in its own right. In addition, the presence of hill tribes and their wealth of unique cultures enhance Chiang Mai's distinctive diversity. Chiang Mai literally means new city and has retained the name despite having celebrated its 700th anniversary in 1996. King Meng Rai founded the city as the capital of the Lanna (A Million Rice Fields) Kingdom on Thursday, 12th April 1296 during the same period of time as the establishment of the Sukhothai Kingdom. King Meng Rai the Great conferred with his friends, King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai and King Ngam Muang of Phayao before choosing the site where the capital of the Lanna Kingdom was to be founded. From then, Chiang Mai not only became the capital and cultural core of the Lanna Kingdom, it was also the centre of Buddhism in northern Thailand. King Meng Rai himself was very religious and founded many of the city's temples, which are still important today.
At the height of its power, the Lanna Kingdom extended its territory far into Burma and Laos, and southwards to Kamphaeng Phet a province above Sukhothai.
The Burmese conquered the Lanna Kingdom in 1556 ending the dynasty founded by King Meng Rai that lasted over 250 years. As Burma had occupied Chiang Mai for nearly 200 years, Burmese architectural influences are visible in many temples. At the end of the 18th century, King Taksin the Great regrouped the Thais in the south and finally drove the Burmese out with the help of King Kawila of Lampang thereby regaining Thai independence from Burma. Chiang Mai was then governed by a succession of princes who ruled the north as a Siamese protectorate under the Chakri dynasty. In the late 19th century, King Rama V appointed a high commissioner in Chiang Mai and it was only in 1939 that Chiang Mai finally came under the direct control of the central government in Bangkok the same time the country was renamed Thailand.
In the past, Chiang Mai was only accessible by river and elephants. More convenient access was achieved only when the railway line was completed in the late 1920's. Moreover, the first motor vehicle driven directly from Bangkok arrived in Chiang Mai in 1932. Such isolation was more favorable to Chiang Mai as it helped to nurture and preserve the unique Lanna culture.
When we look at Chiang Mai today, it is the economic, cultural and communications hub of northern Thailand complete with excellent infrastructure, good roads, by passes and road tunnels, and reliable communications infrastructure.

Experience Thailand: Chiang Mai
Have you heard of Chiang Mai? This beautiful city in the mountainous parts of northern Thailand was once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom. While the empire is no longer around, Chiang Mai continues to reign as a destination for travel in Thailand.
Visitors from all over the world have made their way to this gem in Thailand’s north for lavish temples, bazaars, locally made arts and crafts and elephant sanctuaries.
While the possibility of discovering old traditions, historic architecture and ancient culture is part of Chiang Mai’s allure, this 700-year old city established by King Mengrei in the 13th-century is also filled with more modern attractions too. An exciting metropolis has developed around the Old City.
Foodies will love Chiang Mai’s blossoming culinary scene, and design lovers will find unique creations and art being showcased in spaces that are every bit of the 21st-century. In December of 2017, UNESCO awarded this Chiang Mai the title of Creative City.
During the day you can spend your time taking in the Chiang Mai’s past, present and future by observing a mixture between the intricate art that adorns the beautiful old temples and exploring the contemporary art and design scene.
Once the sun goes down the city comes to life with night markets, buzzing bars, hip restaurants and hubs for street-food. A little bit outside the old city walls and bustling cosmopolitan area, you can explore idyllic villages and peaceful countryside, beautiful waterfalls and other beautiful scenery.
It’s time to start planning your escape to Chiang Mai, a land in the north where Thailand’s past, present and future come together and create an experience like no other!

Chiang Mai (/ˌtʃæŋ ˈmaɪ/, from Thai: เชียงใหม่ [tɕʰīəŋ màj] (About this soundlisten), Northern Thai: [t͡ɕīəŋ.màj] (About this soundlisten)), sometimes written as Chiengmai or Chiangmai, is the largest city in northern Thailand and the capital of Chiang Mai Province. It is 700 km (435 mi) north of Bangkok near the highest mountains in the country.
Chiang Mai (meaning New City in Thai) was founded in 1296 as the new capital of Lan Na, succeeding the former capital, Chiang Rai:208–209 The city's strategic location on the Ping River (a major tributary of the Chao Phraya River) and its proximity to major trading routes contributed to its historic importance.
Although the city (thesaban nakhon, city municipality) of Chiang Mai only officially covers most parts of the Mueang Chiang Mai District, with a population of 160,000, the city's sprawl extends into several neighboring districts. The Chiang Mai metropolitan area has a population of nearly one million people, more than half the total of Chiang Mai Province.
The city is subdivided into four khwaeng (electoral wards): Nakhon Ping, Srivijaya, Mengrai, and Kawila. The first three are on the west bank of the Ping River, and Kawila is on the east bank. Nakhon Ping District includes the northern part of the city. Srivijaya, Mengrai, and Kawila consist of the western, southern, and eastern parts, respectively. The city center—within the city walls—is mostly within Srivijaya ward.
Night Bazaar and Sunday Market are both held at night. Maybe people mention night market for night bazaar. Thai people call Sunday Market also walking street. To the night bazaar you can go every evening and is near the Ping River, outside Old Chiang Mai. Night bazaar is more commercial, however if you bargain very well you can do well.

Amazing Thailand #12: Chiang Mai
Last chapter on the series Amazing Thailand!
Chiang Mai ( เชียงใหม่ ), Lanna sometimes written as Chiengmai or Chiangmai, is the largest and most culturally significant city in northern Thailand, and is the capital of Chiang Mai Province. It is located 700 km (435 mi) north of Bangkok, among the highest mountains in the country. The city is on the Ping river, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya river.
In recent years, Chiang Mai has become an increasingly modern city and attracts approximately 1 million visitors each year. Chiang Mai gained prominence in the political sphere in May 2006, when the Chiang Mai Initiative was concluded here between the ASEAN nations and the +3 countries (China, Japan, and South Korea). Chiang Mai's historic importance derived from its strategic location on the Ping river and major trade routes. The city has long been a major center for hand-crafted goods, umbrellas, jewelry (particularly silver) and woodcarving.
While officially the city (thesaban nakhon) of Chiang Mai only covers most parts of the Mueang Chiang Mai district with a population of 150,000, the urban sprawl of the city now extends into several neighboring districts. This Chiang Mai Metropolitan Area has a population of nearly one million people, more than half the total of Chiang Mai Province.
Some of the touristic attraction in or around Chiang Mai include the Elephant Nature Park, the X-Centre (buggy, zorbing, kart, etc), Adventure Centre (river rafting, quad-bike/ATV), trekking in the forest and hill tribes and the night bazar.

Hi Guys! Welcome back to my channel. Here is part 2 of our Thailand trip where we visited the islands and Chiang Mai! We also visited the elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai, it was a very relaxing and humbling experience to spend a few hours with the elephants. Unfortunately, after two weeks we had to head back home but we had such a memorable time here. Here's a little recap of what we did while we were on the islands and Chiang Mai :) Hope you enjoy!

There is a sight to see when we take a walk with elephant for 2km. It is the excretion of the elephant. The elephant feces are said to be fertilizing the forests and becoming a major source of income for zookeepers. When the program is over, we will return to the hotel. When you come here, there is something to experience. I am the coffee from the elephant dung. You can taste it to taste it yourself. I think you'll probably like it. I wondered what the taste of the elephant coffee was. The afternoon tea here is a little special. It is because you can drink sweet cake and coffee made from elephant excrement. The ivory color of the elephant and the black coffee from the dung are called La Black Ivory Coffee. In the old days, it was produced in Chiang Rai, but now it is only produced in the Sui region. The elephant is fed only 40 percent of the food and the rest is excreted as it is. The food is mixed with the coffee, so the special bean is fermented during the digestion process. In an elephant dung that fed 33kg of coffee, it is said that only 1kg of high quality bean comes out. It is one of the most precious coffee. 35 grams and 1,800 baht is about 60,000 won, which is the most expensive coffee in the world. Sweet scent and sour finish are excellent.
