Chiang Mai ( เชียงใหม่ ), Lanna sometimes written as Chiengmai or Chiangmai, is the largest and most culturally significant city in northern Thailand, and is the capital of Chiang Mai Province. It is located 700 km (435 mi) north of Bangkok, among the highest mountains in the country. The city is on the Ping river, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya river.
In recent years, Chiang Mai has become an increasingly modern city and attracts approximately 1 million visitors each year. Chiang Mai gained prominence in the political sphere in May 2006, when the Chiang Mai Initiative was concluded here between the ASEAN nations and the +3 countries (China, Japan, and South Korea). Chiang Mai's historic importance derived from its strategic location on the Ping river and major trade routes. The city has long been a major center for hand-crafted goods, umbrellas, jewelry (particularly silver) and woodcarving.
While officially the city (thesaban nakhon) of Chiang Mai only covers most parts of the Mueang Chiang Mai district with a population of 150,000, the urban sprawl of the city now extends into several neighboring districts. This Chiang Mai Metropolitan Area has a population of nearly one million people, more than half the total of Chiang Mai Province.
Some of the touristic attraction in or around Chiang Mai include the Elephant Nature Park, the X-Centre (buggy, zorbing, kart, etc), Adventure Centre (river rafting, quad-bike/ATV), trekking in the forest and hill tribes and the night bazar.

Nakhon Ping district covers the north side of the city. Srivijaya, Mengrai, and Kavila cover the west, south, and east side respectively. The central part (the old walled town) is covered mostly by Srivijaya and partly by Nakhon Ping and Mengrai wards.[

Northern Thailand - Chiang Mai
Welcome to day 2 of our Northern Chiang Mai Trip!
First stop of the day was for breakfast at Warorot Market. Warorot Market (or Kad Luang) is a must-visit for food lovers as it offers a wide range of ready-to-eat meals, local snacks and all kinds of fresh produce. A large section of the market features inexpensive goods, such as clothing, fashion accessories and personal care products.
Targeting mostly Thais, Warorot Market is a great place to get a feel for the local way of life. The three-storey building is close to the riverside and easy to find. We truly enjoyed the local dishes there for breakfast!
Next up we headed over to Long Neck Karen Village. The women wear brass rings around their necks, wrists and ankles as part of their culture. It is a good idea to explore, with respect, the village a little to get a feel of their culture and way of life, before supporting their income by purchasing a few souvenirs.
Our next stop was the Pong Yang Jungle Coaster and Zipline Park. Stopped at a calm and relaxing restaurant on our way there (sorry but we forgot to get the restaurant name!), but there are lots of such places just by the roadside on your way up :) We enjoyed the Jungle Coastse rider at the park and spent our afternoon chilling at the Jungle De Cafe.
For our last stop of the day, we headed over to the beautiful Wat Sri Suphan. Wat Sri Suphan is also known as the Silver Temple because of its impressive hand crafted silver decoration. The temple is completely covered in silver, from the walls to the roof and display some detailed silver carvings of Buddhism legends. Even the statues of Buddha are covered in silver. Wat Sri Suphan was originally built around 1500 to serve as the main temple for a silversmith village. While over the years parts of the temple were repaired with silver from the local village the process of completely covering the temple in silver only began in 2008. The inside of the temple is even more interesting with silver decoration, mirrors and bright colours mixed together. However due to old Buddhist rules women are not allowed to enter the inside of the temple and must remain outside.

Northern Thailand, bordering Laos and Myanmar (Burma), is known for its thickly forested mountains inhabited by several hill tribes, each with its own language and culture. The original city is still defined by a square perimeter wall surrounded by a moat. Within and without are a number of temples, some of which date to the city's founding. Chiang Mai is home to many factories for the manufacture of silks, lacquerware, silver and other traditional crafts. The factories can be toured in the daytime, and a wide variety of goods may be purchased at the city's famous night bazaar. The best places to stay are, in fact, all within walking distance of the night bazaar.
