Lanzarote, Castillo de las Coloradas, Playa Blanca
It was built near the primitive Rubicón Tower (constructed by Jean de Bethencourt during the first settlement of Europeans in Canarias in 1402. It is nowadays historically conceived one of the most outstanding archeological structures in Lanzarote. It was proposed by the engineer Claudio L’Isle in 1741 to defend the area from the pirate attacks that were devastating the Southern coasts. The castle had a drawbridge and lodgings for the troops. The sentries came from the village of Yaiza. It also had two chambers.
During the 18th century the Castle was guarded by the Castillians: D. José Feo, D. Juan García del Castillo, D. Pedro Martín Barbosa y D. Marcial Jové Medina and Condestables, D. José martín Barbosa and D. Marcial Trujillo. This castle plan, arisen by militar engineers in 1742, has been preserved by the Militar Geographical Institue. In its whole it is similar to the Tower plans of Caleta de Fuste y El Tostón in Fuerteventura and Gando Tower in Gran Canaria. It should have been the stereotyped design by the militar engineers of the time.
However, it was not finished accordingly as the castle plan shows. The two chambers for keeping the gunpowder, as in the legend of the castle plan, still exists today whereas the central principal pilar does not.”
In the plan, there is a frontal, a vertical and a horizontal section; it has been pointed two spaces: A: Repto. de Pólvora y B: Argive. In 1749, the tower was fired by Algerian Berbers.
In 1767, all fortresses were inspected and the engineer Alejandro de los Ángeles took out the Águilas Tower plan. The renovation and reforms of the castle were undertaken untl 1769, when it was finished. This year was carved on top of the tower’s door and it has preserved today. It says:
“During the Kingdom of D. Carlos III and under the command of Sir Miguel López Fernández de Heredia Marsical de Campo, this tower was rebuilt in San Marcial, Pto. de Las Coloradas, Punta del Águila in the year 1769″.
In 1846, the Militar Engineers Section gave detailed information of the tower and the tower’s state. It was certified that the materials used in this constrution were: stone blocks as can be seen outside, in the stairs, some parts of the interior lime from the local area, on of the most appreciated from the Archipelago and the Tea wood. The building rooms were one dormitory for the troops, three chambers, one of them a storage room for the gunpowder, a dungeon and two ponds for water supplies. In 1936, the tower was not useful for Military and it was given to the Treasure Department.
In 1978, the General Captaincy offer the tower to Yaiza Townhall, which arose the tower plans so the author of this book that we are consulting for this text, D. Jose Félix Álvarez Prieto and who was in charge of the restauration.”
You can climb the steps up to the door of the castle but the tower itself it’s not open to visitors.
Even though the day that I visited it was quite hazy, the views towards Papagayo on one side and across the ocean towards Isla de Lobos and Fuerteventura were spectacular. A nice little stop if you happen to be walking along the Playa Blanca Promenade.
Finally, the castle is featured on Yaiza’s coat of arms.

TUI Family Life Flamingo Beach Playa Blanca Lanzarote- pt3 Daily scramble for loungers
Final part in my mini series in this hotel and this shows the daily jostling match to get a sun lounger near the main pool.
This is what happens at 7am to 7:20am everyday and there’s even a security guard patrolling the pool area to stop people setting up too early.
Maybe I’m privileged but I’ve never stayed at a hotel where this is the norm. In fact the loungers are normally set out and tidied away by staff in my experience.
The morning of this video is actually quite civilised compared to some mornings I witnessed but notice the people throwing their towels on the floor to “get the spot poolside” and then running off to fetch some loungers.
Not shown in this vid is that you have people who will take parasols and tables away from your lounger if you’re not there after setting it up so you end up having to sit and guard your lounger set up for a short while afterwards.
What a shambles!

BACKPACKER - ENG - FUERTEVENTURA
BACKPACKER - English Version - FUERTEVENTURA

Fuerteventura is a subtropical island in the Canary Islands (Spain) in the Atlantic Ocean off the African coast. The surface of the island is 1,660 km ², the population of 100,929 inhabitants. It is part of the province of Las Palmas, and is divided into six municipalities:
Antigua
Betancuria
The Olive
Pájara
Puerto del Rosario
Tuineje
67 individual settlements are distributed among these municipalities. The nearby Islote de Lobos, is part of the municipality of La Oliva. Located just 100 miles off the coast of North Africa, is the second biggest of the islands, after Tenerife, and has the longest beaches in the archipelago. The island is a paradise for fans of the sun, beaches and water sports.
Arid and sparsely populated island. The main activities are agriculture practiced (fruits, vegetables), fishing and tourism. Fuerteventura is widely regarded as the oldest of the Canary Islands. Its strange form was created by a series of volcanic eruptions many thousands of years ago.
The first tourist hotel was built in 1965, followed by the construction of the airport in El matorral, who announced the birth of a new era for the island. Fuerteventura, with its 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, became a major European tourist destinations.
The island is at the same latitude as Florida and Mexico and the temperature rarely falls below 18 ° C or rises above 24 ° C. There are more than 152 beaches along the coast - 50 km of fine white volcanic gravel and 25.
The summer Trade Winds and winter swells of the Atlantic make the island, throughout the year, a paradise for surfers. Sailors, scuba divers and deep-sea fishermen are attracted by the sparkling Atlantic waters where whales, dolphins, marlin and turtles are a common sight.
Much of the interior, with its vast plains and volcanic mountains, consists of protected areas that can be explored by jeep or (for the brave) with motocross.
You can taste many products in these tropical islands, from exotic fruits such as papaya, avocado, mango and plantains (bananas are tropical) to the great variety of tropical fruit juices and many other local products such as palm honey, jam cactus, banana cream tropical islands, and also arrugatas papas (potatoes, sweet and exotic, boiled in salted water and served with garlic sauce and yogurt or hot).
Very interesting is the Aloe vera, a succulent plant native to the tropical Canary Islands, was considered sacred by the indigenous Aboriginal people (Guanches).Aloe vera grows in these islands and has thousands of properties, the juice is used for drinking as energy, tonic, and is also against the stomach, it is very healing, because the gel is used to heal burns and to treat pain muscle, is also used in the beauty cream for face and body.
The island's colorful history can be traced in a number of ancient buildings, monuments, museums and archaeological sites.
It is believed that the first settlers have arrived from North Africa - the term Mahorero 'or Maho is still used to describe the people of Fuerteventura and comes from the term' Mahoso 'meaning is a type of goatskin shoe worn by the inhabitantsoriginating. They lived in caves and semi-underground houses, some of which have been discovered and excavated revealing the remains of ancient tools and pottery.in ancient times the island was known as Planaria, among other names, in reference to the flatness of much of their profile.
On the island is an airport in Puerto del Rosario. Puerto del Rosario is also the main port, with ferries to Arrecife (Lanzarote) and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Gran Canaria). There are also links between Corralejo and Playa Blanca (Lanzarote) and between the Morro Jable Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
I have traveled all over the island far and wide with an Opel Astra rented for 22 euros a day, I came up to the tip end of the island after 20 km of gravel road, I was trying to return to sleep and I stopped at El Cotillo, after miles of empty road, without even a motel, in fact El Cotillo, where two young Italians of Turin, which opened the Taco Loco Tacos Mexican restaurant, the only ones on the island, I had taken in their home and offered lunch in exchange for this advertising!
And here ends the trip, with the last night of sleep in the car in the parking lot of the port, water bottle from the last bar of reggae rhythms and Spanish cerveza one euro.

Lanzarote Airport guide to getting to Puerto Del Carmen!
Lanzarote Airport guide to getting to Puerto Del Carmen.
We see many poor souls picking wrong lanes and alike (as you'll see early on with the Citroen). This video will really help you if you are driving to Matagorda or Puerto Del Carmen for the first time. In fact, it'll help anyone leaving the Airport by car who has not done so before.
We always use AutoReisen for our cars. They top so many review sites and are easily the best priced on the island.
We also highly recommend the Elena Apartments in PDC (Puerto Del Carmen) for their prices and location.
Finally, this is the route we took on the video.
