Luang Prabang buffalo dairy yields wealth of benefits.
The Lao Buffalo Dairy in
Luang Prabang province
is benefitting the local
community in many ways,
by providing income for
villagers and a sustainable
future for the Lao people
involved in the project.
It operates in close
collaboration with local
villagers and is supported by
a number of non-profit and
government organisations.
The farm works with
villages in the province to
produce buffalo cheese and
a range of dairy products.
It is a socially-responsible
enterprise consisting of
a commercial dairy and
production facility that turns
out yogurt, cheese and icecream
and other products
for local and overseas
customers.
The Lao Buffalo Dairy
was established in 2014 and
is located in Meuangkhay
village, Luang Prabang
district.
This socially-responsible
business is funded, owned
and managed by foreign
investors and two Lao
nationals.
The CEO of Lao Buffalo
Dairy, Ms Susie Martin, said
the farm cooperates with and
benefits people from villages
in and around Luang Prabang
by renting their buffalo. This
provides families with a
regular income stream from
an underutilised resource,
particularly female buffalo.
“We rent female buffalo
from villagers so we can
milk them. We have built
a facility for milking the
buffalo and keeping them
well fed, healthy and safe.
During this time, we care
for, feed, and vaccinate all
the buffalo and their calves,”
Ms Martin said.
“We give the owner 1.4
million kip each time we
rent one buffalo. They stay
here for about eight months,
including six months when
they are milked daily after
giving birth. Then they are
returned to the owner until
they are ready to calve again
and the process will start
anew. The villagers will
retain ownership of their
animals. Calves become
buffaloes and these buffaloes
will in turn have calves, and
a cycle of opportunity will
begin.”
“ We b u y c a s s a v a ,
popcorn and rice grain from
local people which also
supplements their income.
We will increase the number
of orders when the number
of buffalo increases. We
may also help villagers to
grow grass for our farm,”
she added.
The farm benefits from a
local and international team
with a combined wealth of
experience.

I'M A RICE FARMER! ???? // Luang Prabang, Laos (w/ Backstreet Academy and the Living Land Farm Laos)
I partner with Backstreet Academy to experience an aspect of local life in Luang Prabang: RICE FARMING!
During this incredible excursion, I travel to the Living Land Farm in the Luang Prabang area, where sticky rice is produced. Our host, Lee, takes us through the entire process, from selecting the seed, to plowing the fields, to harvesting and refining. This tiny grain that we take for granted means so much to so many people in Laos and all over the world. It was wonderful to see where my food comes from!

BEAUTIFUL Kuang Si Waterfalls | Milking a WATER BUFFALO at the Laos Dairy!
We ventured out of lovely Luang Prabang to explore the STUNNING Kuang Si waterfalls and the Laos Buffalo dairy. The waterfall is a short ride from town and the water is some of the most beautiful we have ever seen! After climbing to the top of the falls and taking a quick dip in the water, we hopped in a taxi to the Laos Buffalo dairy. We weren't sure what to expect from this but had SUCH a good time taking this tour! We really enjoyed feeding the animals, learning all about the project and of course trying the delicious buffalo milk treats.

Living Land Laos | preserving culture
Laut Lee, director of Living Land Laos in Luang Prabang, took us on a tour of their permaculture traditional farm and showed us the way their culture is banding together to preserve healthy food options and keep the ancient knowledge alive for future generations.
You can join a tour with them 7 days a week and learn the 14 steps to making rice. They teach you hands on skills such as seed selection, metal working, plowing, handicrafts from natural plants, planting and eating many kinds of foods developed from rice even drinking rice wine.

The Secret Waterfall - Near Luang Prabang, Laos
Recently we went to a waterfall outside of Luang Prabang, Laos. In the expat community it is known as the secrtet waterfall, because few people know about it and they like to keep it that way. There is the big well known waterfall that gets super busy, but this one, although much smaller, hardly gets any visitors. We enjoyed a wonderfully relaxed afternoon at the secret waterfall.

Water Buffalo and Rice Paddies in Sam Neua
Most of the rice paddies in Laos are probably prepared using a mechanized lot tai similar to a large rototiller. It's only in more remote areas will you still see water buffalo being used to prepare the paddy for the transplanting of rice seedlings. I had never witnessed a scene like this before with so many water buffalo being used at once. In the background on the hills you can see swidden agriculture where rice has been planted on hillsides cleared by cutting trees (probably second growth now).
