Mount Lao, or Laoshan is a mountain located near the East China Sea on the southeastern coastline of the Shandong Peninsula in China. The mountain is culturally significant due to its long affiliation with Taoism and is often regarded as one of the cradles of Taoism. It is the highest coastal mountain in China and the second highest mountain in Shandong, with the highest peak (Jufeng) reaching 1,132.7 metres (3,716 ft).

Qingdao is an incredible city offering so many places to play outdoors. We love to take our road bikes out and discover new areas and meet other cyclists.
The Laoshan Scenic Area seaside ocean road is TripAdvisor's #1 attraction in Qingdao so you MUST NOT miss it if you are in Qingdao and this video provides maps and instructions on how to do it and what you will see.
This was our first time getting through the guard gate entering the Laoshan Mountain area and exiting out the other gate. We call this the Forbidden Road because cyclists are not allowed after the guard gate opens at 7 am because there is no shoulder to the road for cyclists to ride on so if you want to ride it or drive it without a fee, cross the gate before 7 am.
It was a VERY hilly, undulating ride. We struggled with the many 15-20% graded hills, but we persisted. The scenery along the coast from guard gate to guard gate is barred none some of the most beautiful coastlines I have ever experienced and the ride is challenging and interesting. We love it and it has become our favorite ride in Qingdao. Once we leave the coast and get on the Provincial Road to we pass over another mountain which is the steepest to head back home.
Next time, we might go and return on the same seaside road. This is definitely a must-see when you visit Qingdao. You can opt to do this path in a car, bus or on a bike!

Mount Lao, or Laoshan (simplified Chinese: 崂山; traditional Chinese: 嶗山; pinyin: Láo Shān) is a mountain located near the East China Sea on the southeastern coastline of the Shandong Peninsula in China. The mountain is culturally significant due to its long affiliation with Taoism and is often regarded as one of the cradles of Taoism. It is the highest coastal mountain in China and the second highest mountain in Shandong, with the highest peak (Jufeng) reaching 1,132.7 metres (3,716 ft).[1] The mountain lies about 30 kilometres (19 mi) to the northeast of the downtown area of the City of Qingdao and is protected by the Qingdao Laoshan National Park that covers an area of 446 square kilometers.

Episode 12: Tour de Qingdao Bike Travel: Cycling Laoshan Mountain, China Shandong 青岛旅游：中国自行车崂山
Qingdao is not only our home but a gorgeous city on the Yellow Sea at the foot of multiple mountain ranges. It is a paradise for an outdoor enthusiast! The city has endless roads and pathways for both running and cycling.
Today's video highlights both the natural and the human obstacles that we encountered on our cycle from sea level over one of the passes of Laoshan, one of our favorite local mountains. Most of the roads in Qingdao are constantly groomed and perfect for cycling, but the village approach to the peak is an exception; the city has been working on this 3-4 mile stretch for almost a year now. While some of it has been restored, you will see we encountered many rough surfaces for road bikes! And, the result was a split tire and a flat on two different bikes. But, it was still worth it! At least there is evidence of ongoing road construction and an attempt to restore the road surface which will help us out when we hit the 14-17% grades. Right now, it's hard to gain traction.
This is one of our favorite rides as it takes us through the local villages and growing areas. Right now the China Berry trees are blooming and the cherries are bright red and ready to be eaten straight from the tree. Every street was lined with cherry baskets and locals trying to sell their freshly picked fruit. If only we had a way to carry cherries in our cycling jersey pockets! We probably need to carry a couple of saddle bags! HA! We hope you enjoy the video!
