Aurora watchingの為にやって来たLaplandの小さな村Saariselkaで宿泊したホテルがこれ。 でも、残念ながら、空を覆う雲の為に、期待した結果は得られなかった。 せめて1~2週間滞在出来ておれば、その間に見るｌ機会に恵まれていたかも？
この地で取材したTV番組を後日見たが、その取材時には上手くオーロラが撮影できた模様。 運不運があるようだ。

Lapland is Finland’s northernmost region, a sparsely populated area bordering Sweden, Norway, Russia and the Baltic Sea. It’s known for its vast subarctic wilderness, ski resorts and natural phenomena including the midnight sun and the Northern Lights.
Capital Rovaniemi is the gateway to the region. The homeland of the indigenous Sami people, which extends into neighboring countries, centers on the far north.

Saariselkä, is located 250 km north of the polar circle and this was one of the first days with daylight . The reindeer and we did enjoy the sun and the cold weather with -25°C ( -13°F)

Winter Adventure at Muotka Wilderness Lodge Saariselka, Finland
Travelers come from all over the world hoping to see the Northern Lights, above the Arctic Circle in the Saariselka region of Lappland. But even without the lights, there are a gazillion winter adventure activities - snowmobile, reindeer sled, ski (both downhill and x-country) - the list goes on and on... And Mutoka has excellent, excellent food!
What to See and Do in Saariselka, Finnish Lapland
Saariselka in Northern Lapland is a popular tourist destination (I'd call it a mecca) for cross country skiing skiers with almost 200 kilometers of well marked and tracked trails, two small downhill ski area, dog sledding (husky safaris), snowmobiles, reindeer sleigh rides, Finnish smoke sauna, snowshoeing, and so much more including visits to a gold museum at Tankaaara or Sami Museum.
In typical Finnish style, the little village is easily walkable, signage in English, an Information Office, and there is a wonderful supermarket/bakery/sit down restaurant/take away food. A good thing because restaurant prices were not only very expensive but only adequate and we resorted to making sandwiches after a so-so meal! Restaurants begin serving at noon and continue straight through the evening so visitors never have to worry about a good time to eat.
Ivalo Airport is located 25 kilometers north of Saariselka, close to the Arctic Sea and Norway border. Once in Saariselka, there is no need for a car; a ski bus circulates all day. Just dress warmly; temperatures never rose above 15F and nights dropped down to -35F. The tips of my fingers still tingle from taking off gloves to video and photograph...

This is Saariselkä, an area in Northern Finland, Lapland! This video was filmed in February, the temperatures ranged from -10 to -25°C. A couple of the nights were beautifully filled with the northern lights (auroras), and the somewhat short days had beautiful sunshine and spectacular looking snow.
The Saariselkä area shown in this video is popular among tourists, and definitely for a reason. There in winter you have a high chance of seeing the northern lights (auroras) in the nighttime, and in the daytime, you can see reindeers, take a husky ride, go skiing, try one of the longest sledding hills and enjoy hot saunas.

Arctic winter in Inari-Saariselkä, Lapland
In the North, winter begins with a mystical period of darkness, when the sun remains below the horizon. The sky glows blue and violet, the Northern Lights dazzle and the snow is soft and pure. Here the arctic winter last well over half a year! The snow is at its thickest in the period from March-April at almost a meter deep. In late winter the days are filled with sunshine.

Husky Safari in Lapland
Dog sledding in Lapland, otherwise known as a husky safari, is highly recommended. It's fast but safe and really fun. I'd do it after a reindeer safari cause it's that much more exciting. About 2 hours is enough (thought there are all sorts of packages up to 6 hours including lunch). They do supply you with hats, an extra overcoat and gloves but come with warm clothes as well. A 2 hour safari is approx 120-150 Euro per person. Two people per sleigh. I wouldn't do a husky safari or dog sled to look for Northern Lights simply because you really have to concentrate on driving. The reindeer safari is probably better for sky watching but then again anywhere in Saariselka town would be perfect too! You don't have to spend money to see the Aurora.
