Road Trip & Things to do in Lapland, Finland
In search for the best winter spots Kristin & I went on a road trip through Lapland in Finland and checked out all the things to do in Lapland and it was magical!
More info:
I know it took a while to finish editing this video as I had to struggle with the 4k video data I got from my new toy: the drone. I'm now able to shoot lovely aerial footage to give you an even broader picture of the destination.
Our trip to finnish Lapland started in Rovaniemi with the visit of the Santa Claus village where we said hi to Santa himself and had some fun tubing and drinking at the ice bar in Snowman World.
Snowmobiling was a great way to start our second day & I would say it's one of the must dos in Lapland for sure!
Next stop was the area of Ylläs where we spent most of our time: ice sculpturing, snowshoeing, skiing, dog sledding, a reindeer safari, sauna and northern light sightings made this trip to once in a lifetime winter experience!

All-electric snowmobiles go on Lapland safaris
(1 Jan 2019) LEAD IN:
Tourists in Finnish Lapland are exploring the arctic wilderness on what's claimed to be the first all-electric snowmobile safaris in the world.
Those behind the so-called eSleds believe there's more potential to the eco-friendly arctic vehicles than simply tourism.
STORY-LINE:
These winter tourists are about to embark on an arctic adventure with a difference. They'll be driving these electric snowmobiles - or eSleds - claimed to be the first of their kind.
Over the course of about two hours, they'll explore Lapland's snow-covered forests, traveling about 15 to 25 kilometres on battery power alone.
Company Aurora eMotion also offers evening trips and Northern Lights safaris.
Especially in tourism, there is this eco point of view that when you come faraway to Lapland, to fragile areas, you don't want to ruin the silence of the nature and the feeling, how is it to be in the deep-down forest, feel the complete silence, says Olli Haavikko from Aurora eMotion.
If you have the engine noise or polluting vehicles there it breaks the illusion, it's not the real deal anymore, to come here in the deep forest.
The eSled is the result of development work at the Lapland University of Applied Sciences, which commenced in 2010.
One of the biggest challenges was developing a battery system that keeps charge in the Arctic Circle's sub-zero temperatures.
Engineers developed a liquid heating system that keeps the battery warm, even in -40 degrees Celsius.
Temperatures can drop down to minus 30 or even minus 40 degrees Celsius, says Haavikko.
So, it's very cold and that is something we have been struggling with the lithium ion cells, how to manage in extreme temperatures, but we have managed to make an active thermal management system in our sleds, which means that we are able to operate in the coldest temperatures possible because we always keep our lithium ion cells warm.
Aurora eMotion's sister company, Aurora Powertrains - established last year - manufactures the eSleds from its factory in Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland.
But as the auto industry embraces greener hybrid and all-electric vehicles, the emission-free eSleds are yet to find a wider audience.
One drawback is the price - the electric snowmobiles are currently about three-times the price of a regular gas-powered vehicle. Although maintenance costs are low and charging the vehicles is much cheaper than filling one with gas.
A two-hour winter safari on the eSleds starts from 119 euros (approx. $135 USD) per person.
But Haavikko says a bigger challenge is their range. The eSleds can race to about 95 kilometres an hour and have a maximum range of about 40 kilometres on a single charge. A full charge takes about 45 minutes.
The biggest issue is the range at the moment, says Haavikko.
We can ride 40 kilometres with these eSleds, so you really need to plan the route before you go deep down to the forest because you don't to go 40 kilometres to the forest and then you don't have battery enough to get back home.
UK tourist Mark Baker is visiting Finnish Lapland with his family. He says riding the eSleds is a great experience, but perhaps not one for thrill-seekers looking for a turbocharged ride.
They're great going through the countryside like this because it's peaceful and you get to see things where before with just the noise of the other ones would be, would take anything like wildlife or anything like that away from that sort of situation, he says.
