Drone Footage of the Larabanga Mud Mosque In Ghana - Near Mole National Park
There is zero doubt, the Larabanga Mud Mosque is such a beautiful, unique building and a must see when you're visiting Ghana. It honestly took our breath away when we saw it for the first time. But everything around it was such torture. It's a straight up tourist trap, it almost feels like you have to pay for breathing air when you're near the mosque. It was rather unpleasant but we weren't walking away without the material we came for. But we're going to talk about it more in an upcoming article on our Ghana Travel Blog:
And believe me, I was not walking away from that mosque until I had all the material I came for after paying up like that :)

LARABANGA - A town of an ancient mosque and a mystic stone
Larabanga is a town with a great history and rich culture. An ancient mosque of Sudanese architecture is their pride. They also believe in a stone they regard as sacred. These are two key tourism attractions of the area. Famous Kwesi Atitsogbe brings to this interesting documentary.

I visited the Larabanga Mosque in Ghana/Northern Region/HIM Tours Adventures
I was scrolling my Facebook timeline one day and came across an article about the Larabanga Mosque, which happened to be in Ghana. Since I was already planning a trip, I knew I had to visit. I am a history lover (it was my minor in college) so I made my way to the Northern Region of Ghana with HIM Tours Ghana.
The Larabanga Mosque is a mosque, built in the Sudanese architectural style in the village of Larabanga, Ghana. It is the oldest mosque in the country and one of the oldest in West Africa, and has been referred to as the Mecca of West Africa. It has undergone restoration several times since it was founded in 1421. The World Monuments Fund (WMF) has contributed substantially to its restoration, and lists it as one of the 100 Most Endangered Sites. The restoration works have revived the knowledge of mud-plaster maintenance.
The mosque has an old Quran, believed by the locals to have been given as a gift from heaven in 1650 to Yidan Barimah Bramah, the Imam at the time, as a result of his prayers. The mosque, built with mud and reeds, has two tall towers in pyramidal shape, one for the mihrab which faces towards Mecca forming the facade on the east and the other as a minaret in the northeast corner. These are buttressed by twelve bulbous shaped structures, which are fitted with timber elements. (source: Wikipedia)

Larabanga Mud Mosque - Walk Around - Unique Architecture Of West Africa
Mud, Stone and Wood - this is all being used to build this unique mud mosque of Larabanga. There are several mud mosques in Ghana but this is claimed to be the oldest and most beautiful one.
You can't go inside unless you're muslim but they do have a replica room which reflects the inside of the original mosque but we had zero interest to see that.
One thing I would like to do when we're ever back in Ghana, is to seek out all the other mosques which are less frequently visited.
Read all about the Larabanga Mud Mosque in a soon to be published article on our Ghana Travel Blog:

Ghana - Larabanga Mosque
Northern Ghana is the doorstep to Sahel (the arid ring below the Sahara). The Larabanga mosque is the oldest mosque in the country and one of the oldest in the entire Africa, dating back to 1421, when an Islamic trader founded it here after being told to do so by “mystic stone”. The mosque is truly stunning albeit not big - made of mud and reeds and painted sparkling white. Supposedly, there is an ancient Koran from 16th century inside but non-Muslims are not allowed in, you can just walk around to take pictures. A donation to the mosque is required, as is the ticket to see it, as well as a mandatory guide fee, and a mandatory tip.
