The Largs Incident
One empty and meaningless afternoon, Peep and I had a conversation about how Arcade gaming has diminished in interest throughout recent years...especially within the United Kingdom. However, this conclusion was only justified by the fact that we, ourselves, had lost interest.
The question and goal was clear...was there any love for arcade gaming in the UK anymore? We had to know! Afterall, we could have simply been ignorant this whole time and there was always the possibility that we had criminally ignored the community to the extent that we assumed it had faded away in our absence.
It was time to find out the truth.
We decided to visit one of the hottest Arcade parlours in our local area (at least it was hot back in the early 90's anyway)...so we decided to take a road trip to sunny Largs (where it was raining of course) in search of arcade cabinets and parlours of yesteryear! Would we find a buzzing community of coin-dropping, joystick pulling, button mashing homies? Or would we find a toilet!?
Prepare for dissapointment!

Kilbirnie Castle (or Place of Kilbirnie) is situated in North Ayrshire between the towns of Beith and Largs. Though a listed building it is in a very bad state of repair. There are 2 distinct periods - a late 15th century tower to which an exceptionally handsome range was attached in the 17th century.
The tower is vaulted on 2 floors with walls over over 7ft in thickness. The palatial addition dates from around 1627.
In 1757 the castle was destroyed by fire and abandoned. Subsequently writings record that its 'pleasure grounds' were torn up by the plough.
Kilbirnie is building of the highest quality and importance yet ignored in writings - a fate it shares with many West of Scotland sites.
What a loss to our national heritage this building is.
One hundred years ago restoration was viable - today it would require a leap of faith but is still achievable.
