The city of Larisa is the capital of the province and is built on the very central area of the large plain on the right bank of Pineios river. It is one of the most significant commercial, agricultural and communication centers of Hellas. Larisa is a city that combines the remains and color of the long passed Turkish rule and the Ottoman culture, with the Hellenic cultural and architectural style of the beginnings of the 20th century. A city that also combines the tranquillity and the relaxed rhythm of the lazy river, the many storks that build their nests on the tallest buildings of the city and the sleepy movements of the river fishermen, along with the hubbub of a busy, bustling town. After many years of uncontrolled growing the city has managed, only recently, to restore a harmonic relationship with its river and the surrounding environment in general. The city's Post-Office's(Tachydromiou) square with its excellent sculptures, representing the branching, life-giving, ever-flowing water bulk of river Pineios, along with the site of the excavations of the ancient theater of the city, located at its very center, have caused a major transformation of the city, that brings it more close to its origins, bonds it tightly to the surrounding environment and restores its classic atmosphere. The ancient city of the theater had a capacity of 10000 spectators. But this excavation site may not be the city's most significant landmark. This title is most suitably given to the grave of Heppocrates, born in the island of Kos in 460 BC and died in the city of Larisa in 377 BC, who is considered to be the father of modern medicine. At the outskirts of the nearby town of Achileion the ruins of the local castle have been excavated. The ruins are dated back to the 15th century but the original compound was erected sometime during the late Neolithic period. The visit to the Folklore and Historic museum of the city may be proved to be most rewarding for the traveler. Also rewarding is a visit to the city's National Gallery with its fine collection of paintings, only second in significance after the National Gallery of Athens.

Kapnikarea #rapeculture Protest
Protesting against rape culture in Greece is not a usual thing. The protest downtown Athens was a response to the serial rape of a 14-year-old girl in Larissa, the fifth most populous city in Greece. The girl was forced by her godfather to have sex with men. Rape victims from other cities or villages in Greece usually never speak out, but this girl managed to report it to the authorities.

AEL Larissa history from 1964-88' (English subtitles)
A.E. Larissa F.C. was founded on the 17th of May 1964 after the union of four local teams : Larisaikos, Iraklis, Aris and Toxotis. The vision of this decision was the creation of a strong club in order to represent the city of Larissa in the top divisions of the greek football and the greek club' s name (Athlitiki Enosi Larissas) represents this idea, since it' s translated as Athletic Union of Larissa. It' s colors were decided to be claret and white and as an emblem was used the galloping horse, the symbol of the city due to the tradition since the ancient years.
Nine years later Larissa F.C. qualifies into the first division of the Greek championship, but two year later returns back to
the second division. The moment of the glorious comeback is the 18th June of 1978 : the club wins Makedonikos by 4-1 in Thessaloniki in front of thousands of supporters and opens a new era, the creation of a team that would bring the so - called football revolution in the 80' s.
The first sign was the participation in the greek cup final in 1982 against Panathinaikos, where Larissa lost by 1-0. Two years later the history was repeated and Larissa lost again by 2-0. The 3rd time in the greek cup Final was the crucial one. Larissa had to face the champion of that season, PAOK Thessaloniki on 22-06-1985 in the Olympic stadium of Athens. The claret boys had taken their black and white opponents were struck by storm and after an incredible performance ended to win the historical game by 4-1. The same year, some months earlier Larissa' s name was spread all over Europe after it' s fantastic performance in the Uefa Cup Winner' s Cup, reaching to the quarterfinals. The club on it' s way to the 8 of the competition beat Siofok and Servette before losing from Dynamo Moscow. Three years later Larissa F.C. marches for the title of the Greek Championship.
During Mars' 88, a weird story about a foreign player using forbidden medicine is used to take away 4 points from the club. The supporters revolve against this ridiculous scandal and thousands of them close the national road and the railway station : the whole country remains cut in two for more than two day. The prime minister himself orders to change the law about forbidden medicine leaving the cost for the user as it was in the rest of Europe. Larissa ends it' s way to the top of the 1st of May 1988 beating Iraklis in Alkazar stadium by 1-0 : the magnificent goal goal by the captain Giorgos Mitsimponas gives the sign for thousands to celebrate.

PALIOS PANTELEIMON, A LISTED VILLAGE
Now that you’re here, why not head up to Palios Panteleimon? This listed village has been called the Balcony of Olympus. You’ll travel back in time walking from the old village to the square filled with humongous plane trees. Oh, the views in this timeless place are stunning, too.
Platamonas Castle
The function of a castle is to dominate an area and Platamonas must have done this brilliantly as it overlooks a huge stretch of the coast of Pieria. The high walls and well-preserved central tower date from the 10th century. While excavations have unearthed Hellenistic remains from the 4th century BC, it is the Byzantine churches and traces of the 10th-century town and its subsequent incarnations that will grab your attention.
Trekking the Enipeas Gorge
Take the path along the gorge from Mylous near Litohoro to Prionia on the edge of Olympus National Park. The scenery is stunning and you’ll feel as if it was made just for you.
National Park and a unique ecosystem
At the heart of Olympus, the country’s single most important national park, you’ll commune with Greece’s ‘divine’ natural heritage. Ravines and ridges, gorges and plateaus, deep caves and daunting rocks will make impressive snapshots. But they’re not just photogenic. This mountain harbours more than 1,500 types of plants (some endemic), dozens of animal species and many rare birds.
The Mt Olympus Marathon
A modern-day marathon has revived the route of the ancient Greeks who, once a year and in honour of their beloved god Zeus, made the journey to the peaks of Mt Olympus. The marathons starts at the archaeological site of Dion, just 5m above sea level, and reaches a height of 2,780m, just below the famed ‘Throne of Zeus’.

Within it’s cobblestone paths, you will find nice touristic shops with various objects that really pull you in to take a closer look, even if you’re not the type who collects souvenirs from trips. In the central square, which is very picturesque and beautiful, you can have lunch, enjoy a cup of coffee, or a have a homemade sweet at one of the cafes. The perennial trees and the vines produce shade even at midday, cooling down visitors.
The tavernas are pretty nice, and are worth stopping at for lunch, even if you are traveling on the national highway of Thessaloniki – Larissa. It is a place with a nice vibe that can also serve as a base for exploring the surrounding area. An ideal destination for relaxation that combines views of mountains and sea.

SufiTekeTembi
Upon the western entrance of the steep valley of Tembi, lies a small village since ancient times. Due to its position it was making a living on inns for the merchants and travellers and from the weatfields bowing down the stream of Pineios river. Close enough to river, so that its sound is flowing like a wispering lullaby, lies a big beautiful house with a big yard which walls are ornamented by the remains of the silk factory. On the axis of East-West, the house prides its space between the Christian church (said to be built on top of the temple of Apollon) and the Sufi Teke. When Greece was part of the Ottoman empire, a Sufi holy man came here from Ikonio (Konya-Turkey) and built it erected it for his Bektasides. After him, the village was called at that time Hasan Baba. With the country's independense from the empire, it regained the name of Tembi.
