Andean Cock-of-the-Rock male displaying at Las Tangaras reserve lek, Mindo, Ecuador
Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (ACOR) male displaying at the Las Tangaras reserve lek, located just outside Mindo, Ecuador. Each male has his own branch or spot that he clears and displays on. Many of the birds have been banded as part of an ongoing banding project headed by Dr. Dusti Becker. Reserve managers visit the lek at least once a week to observe the males displaying and track banded males (or a female if one comes to check out the lek). Male (ACORs) display twice a day, year-round at the lek. The morning display starts before dawn and lasts for 2-3 hours. The afternoon display, which is usually not as well-attended as the morning display, starts around 3pm and can also last 2-3 hours.
