The Road to Rurrenabaque from La Paz
There's not a lot of (recent) information about this road out to Rurrenabaque from La Paz, Bolivia, and there needs to be! Most people that I've met in this town have taken the plane, and I feel it's a shame, and a product of the fact that there's not enough info, or at least correct info.
I will start by saying that it isn't for the faint of heart, and that if you easily get motion sick, it may not be for you. The road is bumpy, and it does ride closely to cliff edges from time to time. BUT the road is being worked on daily. This is the reason that you can only take night buses, because the road is closed during the day for construction.
It is a long bus, but not as long as a lot of reviews say. Our bus took 14 hours, and it was raining. A local, who takes the bus monthly, says that bus has never taken him longer than 16 hours, but on a good day it only takes 12 hours. The buses aren't full cama, but the seats do lean back enough to get some rest, depending on how well you can sleep on buses.
The buses are also older, but that's because they're easier to fix and easily get across the roads. New buses just can't take the roughness of the roads, so don't expect your bus to be any sort of fancy.
Currently (May 2019) only two bus companies do the drive, Flota Yunguena and Trans Rurrenabaque. (We went with Flota Yunguena.) Turbus Total use to do this drive, but they were the cheapest company to ride with, and because of this they cut costs by only bringing one driver, which is obviously dangerous on winding roads at night. It ultimately ended in them crashing a bus, and costing them in the end, so they have (thankfully) quit doing this route. The bus is mostly locals, in fact I believe we were the only tourists on the bus.
The bus offices are at the Villa Fatima bus terminal (in the center area of the station), not the main bus terminal in the center of La Paz. But if you're at the center bus station, you can take one of the taxis from there to the Fatima bus station for 30BO, just make sure to get the price from your driver before putting your bags in their car (this is a good idea for all of Bolivia.) Trust me, we did this taxi ride 4 times, and only one guy didn't tell us a price, and once we got there our smallest bill was a 50 and he just took it. Not too big of a deal, but knowing that everyone else only charged 30, it was a small annoyance.
Also, sometimes the buses will leave late. That's no big deal, it's super common, and your bus didn't forget about you, just wait it out, it'll be there.
Just for a price comparison the bus ride is 80 Bolivianos per person one way, and the flight is around 650 Bolivianos per person one way. That rounds out to about $11.50 US Dollars versus $91 US Dollars. So, for round trip, taking the bus saves one person about 160 USD.
For a time comparison the bus ride is between 12-16 hours, and the flight is between 40-50 minuets. So, if time is money for you, taking the flight saves you between 11-15 hours. But if you take the bus, it is a night bus, so you won't be paying for accommodation that night.
*The videos were kept bumpy to show the true life of the road. I didn't want to stabilize them to take away from the authentic-ness.
Please ask any questions here if you have them, I'd love to help you in your travels to this wonderful town!

Protesters and security forces clash in La Paz
(25 Oct 2019) Violent clashes between security forces and demonstrators broke out in the Bolivian capital La Paz late Thursday, after President Evo Morales declared himself victor of the weekend election without a final vote tally.
Riot police guarding the country's National Electoral Court clashed with large numbers of opposition supporters as they tried to storm the National Electoral Court, where the official tally was being directed.
Morales' declaration of victory stirred up more anger among foes who have protested for days claiming fraud in the vote count.
Tensions rose after officials abruptly stopped releasing results from the official quick count of votes hours after the polls closed Sunday.
Initial results said Morales didn't have enough votes to avoid a second-round run-off against his main rival, Carlos Mesa.
After a delay, officials changed their mind and said Morales was close to outright victory.
Finally they announced Thursday that with 99.92% of votes counted , Morales had a 10% lead which meant there was no need for a run-off.
The United States, Brazil, Argentina and Colombia have joined calls for Bolivia to hold a runoff between Morales and Mesa.
