About Latitude Gallery, Abrolhos Islands and The Girl Who Grows The Pearls
The Abrolhos Islands lie 70 kilometres off the coast of Western Australia. Consisting of 122 islands, it's not just the coral gardens that brighten the area, it's the painted camps that provide a colourful contrast to the white washed coral outcrops.
The islands remain one of the most unique marine ecosystem in the world. Lying in the path of the Leeuwin current which maintains water temperatures between 18-26 degrees provides the perfect breeding ground for many marine species and rare birds.
Flotsam and Jetsam - Pia Boschetti, Event Organiser and Gallery Owner
Inspired by Clean Up Australia Day, and the desire to give back to the islands that she grew up on, each year, pearl farmer Pia Boschetti collects, flotsam and jetsam rubbish from the Abrolhos Islands off the coast of Geraldton, Western Australia, and brings it back to the mainland, where locals are invited to collect it, transform it and create incredible pieces of art.
This art is then entered in the Flotsam and Jetsam Exhibition and Competition held at Pia's jewellery store and gallery, Latitude Gallery, in Geraldton, displayed and judged, with prizes from Overall Winner to Peoples' Choice. The exhibition is enjoyed by artists, customers and locals alike, each year. For more information about this year's event visit:

400 years after the first European sighting of the islands by Dutch explorer Frederik de Houtman in 1619, the Western Australian Government has officially gazetted the Houtman Abrolhos Islands as a National Park.
Located approximately 60km off the coast of Geraldton, the Islands are often referred to as Australia’s own Galápagos Islands. Unique in its biodiversity, the famed Western rock lobster, Noddy Sea Birds, Tammar Wallabies and endangered Australian sea lions all make a home here.

Apocalypse in the Abrolhos Islands
For the first time in 5 years, WA scallop fishers were able to fish in the once-profitable waters surrounding the Abrolhos Islands in 2017.
In 2010 and 2011, an extreme marine heatwave decimated stocks. Where once researchers would have found thousands, only a handful were discovered. Literally—there were only five.
It was a dire situation with a whole industry put out of work. Conventions of climate scientists, scallop experts, oceanographers and industry were called. The term ‘extinction’ was even thrown around.
The scallops that survived this apocalyptic oceanic event would have to repopulate the oceans. But only with the help of our Fisheries Department were they able to recover. Scallops are broadcast spawners and can release 1 million eggs per spawning, but the protection of these breeding individuals was crucial in giving the molluscs the space and time they needed to bounce back.
With extreme climate events set to become less ‘freak’ and more frequent, we have to anticipate that similar large-scale population fluxes will occur. Unfortunately, we can’t predict what the weather will do. We also can’t predict the different ways that different species will be affected.
For the time being, we can only rely on one thing—regular sampling and management strategies from our seafaring scientists.

The Abrolhos Islands made me: The Jay Cox story
Jay Cox carried a laminated picture of the boat he needed to start his eco-tourism business in the Abrolhos Islands for 12 months before taking the plunge and purchasing it. People thought the idea of bringing tourists to the islands was crazy. “It’ll never work,” they said. But for Jay, this negative talk went in one ear and out the other: “You don’t know the Abrolhos I know,” he told them.
“When you’re talking about the Abrolhos, it just evokes emotion and you just want to get it out, you just want to tell people.”
Finding himself in the Abrolhos after chasing the islands’ legendary surf, Jay quit his apprenticeship and started crayfishing – and he still sees this as one of the best decisions he’s made. It was during this time that he met and married Sonia, then a barmaid at the local pub in Geraldton. These days, son Bronson is also part of the family business.
“The Abrolhos has been recognised as a world ‘hope spot’. The more exposure it gets, the more we can protect it as a community,” Bronson says. “The experience is very unique. No disruptions whatsoever, no distractions, you can recharge, switch off.” The history of the shipwrecked Batavia adding yet another layer to these fascinating islands.
Discover the beauty of the Abrolhos Islands, plus other extraordinary natural wonders such as World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef, with a road trip along the Coral Coast Highway.

The rise of super predatory sharks
Delivered by Dr Mikael Siversson
Curator of Palaeontology, Earth and Planetary Sciences
For 140 million years, ichthyosaurs and pliosaurs ruled the oceans as supreme top predators. Their reign came to an abrupt end shortly after the rise of giant lamniform sharks, 100 million years ago.
Join Dr Mikael Siversson as he explains how lamniform sharks became the supreme predators in the oceans and how they held on to that position for the better part of 100 million years. Modern lamniforms, such as the white shark and megamouth shark, are remnants of a once far more diverse group of sharks.
