Iceland Part 3 - Westfjords and the Látrabjarg Bird Cliffs to see Puffins.
Our drive up the west coast of Iceland, including lots of puffins.
Puffins at the Látrabjarg Bird Cliffs in Iceland
Látrabjarg in the Westfjords is one of the most thrilling bird watching places in Iceland. The 14 kilometer-long (8.75 mi) bird cliffs rise to 441 meters (1,447 ft) in height. This place is home to literally millions of birds.

Puffins kingdom Iceland Latrabjarg cliffs flying hunting puffin bird drone aerial video footage
Puffins in Iceland the biggest kingdom of the birds.
Cliffs Latrabjarg are without a doubt a great kingdom of puffins.
If you visiting Iceland- walking along the cliffs of the peninsula Latrabjarg is a must. It is a unique place, the westernmost point of Europe.
The cliffs are so steep that make an amazing impression, millions of birds, dozen species, and of course, beautiful and friendly Puffins, which did almost nothing with our presence, we had them on the doorstep :) The different situation was with the drone, birds sensed the danger and giving an effective dive in the ocean :)
If any of you decide on an expedition, I recommend to visit this charming place late in the evening, please keep in mind that Puffins during the day most of the time they spend fishing and feeding the chicks. Ideally time to arrive is after 9-10 p.m. local time when most of the birds are sitting on the cliffs.
We arrived at midnight, there were 3 or 4 other cars and only two people visible on horizon- a paradise for observing, taking photos and struggle with the wind during the risky flight :)
Anyway, I drank whiskey with Puffins, a drone or as it should be professionally determine “the UAV for the commoners” came back in one piece :)
Video of the flight.. well.. came out somehow- because of the weather and the poor light doesn’t fully reflect the charm of the place, but I hope that it will be enjoyed :)
On the whole expedition to Iceland, time spent on these cliffs will be in our memory forever, what is more we'll come back there I think more than once.
Puffins are any of three small species of alcids (auks) in the bird genus Fratercula with a brightly coloured beak during the breeding season. These are pelagic seabirds that feed primarily by diving in the water. They breed in large colonies on coastal cliffs or offshore islands, nesting in crevices among rocks or in burrows in the soil. Two species, the tufted puffin and horned puffin, are found in the North Pacific Ocean, while the Atlantic puffin is found in the North Atlantic Ocean.
All puffin species have predominantly black or black and white plumage, a stocky build, and large beaks. They shed the colourful outer parts of their bills after the breeding season, leaving a smaller and duller beak. Their short wings are adapted for swimming with a flying technique under water. In the air, they beat their wings rapidly (up to 400 times per minute)[1] in swift flight, often flying low over the ocean's surface.

A 15 mile gravel road on a beautiful day
Iceland Vlog: Day 10 (Dynjandi Waterfall, Breidavik Beach & Latrabjarg Cliffs)
Welcome to day 10 of our amazing Iceland road trip!
Day 10:
- After having breakfast we set out on the long drive to Dynjandi Waterfall, the views were amazing and I really enjoyed the views on the way.
- Dynjandi was one of my favourite waterfalls in Iceland, it was actually 4 or 5 different falls in one, there is a carpark with a picnic area and toilets, and from there it is a 20min walk up to the top, walking past the other falls as you go. Once at the top, you can get right next to the waterfall and the views of the fjord are spectacular!
- After that we continued driving and stopped for lunch in a small area at the side of the road, it was nothing special, but the views were great, as per usual.
- Then our next stop was the Gardar BA 64 shipwreck, which is also just off the main road, it is really impressive and there is a picnic area right next to it, well worth a stop if you are not rushed for time.
- Then we stopped at the amazing golden sand beach of Breidavik, a 15min walk from the carpark, it was amazing, I really didn´t expect there to be such a nice beach in Iceland, and especially so far North.
- We continued on and came to the long awaited Latrabjarg cliffs, home to over a million birds from 10 different species, we were unlucky to have arrived too late to see puffins, as they had already moved on for the winter, but the cliffs themselves are outstanding, so high and beautiful and the walk is fantastic, and you can make it as long as you want, just turn back when you are tired.
- And to end the day we went to our campground, Flokalundur, it was small, but the views were once again amazing!

Iceland - Puffins at Látrabjarg Cliffs
Located in the Westfjords, the Látrabjarg Bird Cliffs are the westernmost point in Iceland. Every summer Atlantic Puffins descend on the area to reunite with their mates and raise their chicks before spending the winter months at sea. We visited Látrabjarg in mid April and managed to find a few early arrivals.
