RIGA SIGHTSEEING: Latvian War Museum
Today, we went with a friend to Riga in order to visit this specific museum. I've been there before, but it was like 12 years ago... The museum's free of charge, that's a nice point. Mostly, it has some translations in English, so that's also quite cool, quite educative. I'd put 8/10 to it: interactive part is a bit lacking, as well as some translations, but it's still interesting and enjoyable.
Hope, you'll find this vid useful and interesting for you.
Enjoy! ✨
The Latvian War Museum
Original roots of The Latvian War Museum are connected with events of the World War I on the territory of Latvia, with the creation of national military unit the battalion of Latvian Riflemen had been a part of Russian Czars army in 1915. The museum started to work as Riflemen Museum in 1916. During Latvian Independence till 1940 mentioned museum had been under the supervision of the War Ministry. Starting from 1919 the museum had been located in the Rigas ancient Powder Tower. The main target of the museums work had been reflection of the national fight for freedom and independence, building of national self-acknowledgement, increasing of love to the Fatherland in museum expositions. Were created expositions, Medieval and Modern history, Latvians participation in the revolution in Russia in 1905, World War I events, Proclamation of independence of Latvia, Liberation fights, and state foundation. Latvian Military Power [Sampolit Film]
The military defense concept of Latvia is based upon the Swedish-Finnish model of a rapid response force composed of a mobilization base and a small group of career professionals. The armed forces consist of mobile riflemen, an air force, and a navy. Latvia cooperates with Estonia and Lithuania in the joint infantry battalion BALTBAT and naval squadron BALTRON which are available for peacekeeping operations.
Latvijas Republika is a North European Baltic country in European Union. It is bordered to the north by Estonia, to the south by Lithuania, and to the east both by Belarus and the Russian Federation.
Further information about the country:
Latvia proclaimed independence shortly after the end of WWI on November 18, 1918 which is the Independence Day in Latvia. The first major power to recognize Latvia's independence was the soviet Russian SFSR which relinquished authority over the Latvian nation and claims to Latvian territory once and for all times. On June 16, 1940, this promise was broken by the Soviets and the country was occupied by the Red Army.
On May 4, 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR adopted the Declaration of the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia, subject to a transition period that came to an end with Latvian independence on August 21, 1991, after the failure of the August Putsch. The Saeima, Latvia's parliament, was again elected in 1993, and Russia completed its military withdrawal in 1994.
Latvia is a unitary democratic parliamentary republic and is divided into 26 districts. The capital and largest city is Riga. Latvia has been a member of the United Nations since 17 September 1991, of the European Union since 1 May 2004 and of NATO since 29 March 2004.

4.5.2015 - Latvijas Etnogrāfiskais brīvdabas muzejs - Latvian Open-Air Ethnographic Museum
LV
EN
The Latvian Open-Air Ethnographic Museum is one of the oldest and largest open-air museums in Europe. 118 old buildings from all historical districts of Latvia – Kurzeme, Vidzeme, Zemgale and Latgale – built from the end of the 17th century up to the second half of the 1930s have been relocated, reconstructed and furnished.
Farmsteads of Latvian farmers, craftsmen, and fishermen have been created in the museum. They all house the permanent exhibition – household and working tools, interior furnishings – which characterises the time period, the district, and the owners’ vocation.
The farmsteads of Liv fishermen from Kurzeme and Russian Old Believers from Latgale are also open to visitors.
The museum was established in 1924, and so compared to similar establishments elsewhere in the world, its collection is unique because its formation started at a time when many objects were still preserved and had not been destroyed in the war. The Open-Air Museum covers an area of 87.66 hectares of a pine forest in Riga on the shores of Jugla Lake.

MY LATVIA COLD WAR SOVIET OCCUPATION OF BALTIC STATES 74582
My Latvia is a stirring documentary featurette of the illegal Soviet military occupation of the three then-autonomous Baltic states in 1940. This unusual film, made by filmmaker Albert Jekste who worked for the republic of Latvia prior to the Soviet occupation, illuminates communist methods of internal subversion and conquest. It includes rare scenes of Stalin and other Soviet leaders attending closed Kremlin meetings, and examines the criminal background of the Latvian nationals who invited the Soviets into that country and subsequently assumed high communist government posts. The film was funded by the United States Information Service as part of Cold War efforts to alert the American public to the Communist threat.
Latvia is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe, one of the three Baltic states. It is bordered by Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, and Belarus, as well as a maritime border to the west with Sweden. Latvia is a democratic parliamentary republic established in 1918. The capital city is Riga, the European Capital of Culture 2014.
In 1944, when Soviet military advances reached the area, heavy fighting took place in Latvia between German and Soviet troops, which ended in another German defeat. In the course of the war, both occupying forces conscripted Latvians into their armies, in this way increasing the loss of the nation's live resources. In 1944, part of the Latvian territory once more came under Soviet control. The Soviets immediately began to reinstate the Soviet system. After the German surrender, it became clear that Soviet forces were there to stay, and Latvian national partisans, soon joined by German collaborators, began to fight against the new occupier.
Anywhere from 120,000 to as many as 300,000 Latvians took refuge from the Soviet army by fleeing to Germany and Sweden. Most sources count 200,000 to 250,000 refugees leaving Latvia, with perhaps as many as 80,000 to 100,000 of them recaptured by the Soviets or, during few months immediately after the end of war,[48] returned by the West. The Soviets reoccupied the country in 1944–45, and further deportations followed as the country was collectivised and Sovieticised.
On 25 March 1949, 43,000 rural residents (kulaks) and Latvian patriots (nationalists) were deported to Siberia in a sweeping Operation Priboi in all three Baltic states, which was carefully planned and approved in Moscow already on 29 January 1949. Between 136,000 and 190,000 Latvians, depending on the sources, were imprisoned, repressed or deported to Soviet concentration camps (the Gulag) in the post war years, from 1945 to 1952. Some managed to escape arrest and joined the partisans.
Latvia was made to adopt Soviet farming methods. Rural areas were forced into collectivization. An extensive programme to impose bilingualism was initiated in Latvia, limiting the use of Latvian language in official uses in favour of using Russian as the main language. All of the minority schools (Jewish, Polish, Belorussian, Estonian, Lithuanian) were closed down leaving only two media of instructions in the schools: Latvian and Russian. An influx of labourers, administrators, military personnel and their dependants from Russia and other Soviet republics started. By 1959 about 400,000 people arrived from other Soviet republics and the ethnic Latvian population had fallen to 62%.
