Dimmuborgir lava fields, Iceland
Dimmuborgir (dimmu dark, borgir cities (or forts); pronounced [tɪmʏpɔrcɪr]) is a large area of unusually shaped lava fields east of Mývatn in Iceland. The Dimmuborgir area is composed of various caves and rock formations, remnants of volcanic activity that are perhaps reminiscent of an ancient collapsed citadel, with columns spewing plumes of sulfuric smoke. In Icelandic folklore, Dimmuborgir is said to connect earth with the infernal regions.
Iceland Episode 6 : Borgarnes & Selfoss || 冰岛自驾游, 斯奈山半岛, 博尔加内斯镇
Day 5 of our Iceland trip we travelled back down South from Snaefellsnes to Selfoss. Along the way we stopped by the Settlement Center in Borganes & Koran in Mosfellsbaer. Our final stop was Raufarholshellir Lava Tunnel, a result of an eruption about 5100 years ago!
We stayed at River Apartment in Selfoss area which offers an excellent view of the river. We also caught the Aurora & Milky Way right outside our apartment.

Iceland 2015 Eli 01
Bruce, Lisa, Eli, Alison and Auntie Dianna ventured to Iceland in the summer of 2015. During our 10-day circumnavigation of the island country, we beheld wondrous sights: hot pools, waterfalls, lava, sheep, volcanoes, fumaroles, glaciers, mighty rivers, and ducks. And lots of lava. This is their video journal. WARNING: viewing may induce motion sickness, vertigo, or epileptic seizures.

Grjotagia at Lake Myvatn in Iceland
Grjótagjá is a small lava cave near lake Mývatn with a thermal spring inside.
In early 18th century the outlaw Jón Markússon lived there and used the cave for bathing. Until the 1970s Grjótagjá was a popular bathing site. But during the eruptions from 1975 to 1984 the temperature of the water rose to more than 50 °C. Though the temperature is slowly decreasing and has fallen below 50 °C again. The nearby lava cave of Stóragjá is being used as an alternative bathing site.
Grjótagjá was used as a location for filming the fifth episode of the third season of Game of Thrones, called Kissed by Fire

Inside Iceland's Volcano Tríhnúkagígur
This was a day trip from Reykjavík - one of my favorites. In this day tour you get to hike for about 2 miles through a lava field to base camp. From the base camp, the organizers split people in small groups, since the elevator can only lower about eight people at a time.
Once it's your turn, there is a quick climb to the top of the volcano, which yields one of the most beautiful sceneries you've ever seen. It's breathtaking.
Tríhnúkagígur means Three Peaks Crater in Icelandic. The volcano is dormant and hasn't erupted for about 4,000 years, and is only about 13 miles from Reykjavík, in the Bláfjöll Country Park.
The elevator takes us about 400 ft. down to the bottom of the crater, where you can see the beautiful geometries and colors from inside the magma chamber. They give us about 40 minutes inside the chamber, which is sufficient time.
Once back to the surface, they offer soup, coffee etc. at base camp, before the 2 miles hike back to the main cabin. The total tour is about 5 hours long. So plan for half a day. As a suggestion, you can spend the rest of the day at the Blue Lagon (worth visiting once), whale watching, on taking a stroll in Reykjavík.
