Me and Dean are residing in the Pacific Northwest of wonderful Washington State. We always knew we didn't want to live the status quo life of working a dead end job, having children at a young age, or watching television 5 hours a day. We didn't quit our jobs to travel and we didn't uproot our life away from our family. We choose to work during the week and adventure on the weekends, hoping to inspire others to live life more fully and to never become stagnant no matter what your situation is. Our adventures consist of hiking, backpacking, water activities, farm life, exploring new areas, and snowboarding in the winter. We adventure all year round and adventures will be posted every Monday. Stay happy and humble, friends!

Lava River Cave: Exploring the mile long lava tube, Oregon
In this video we go a mile deep into a cave called Lava River Cave. This cave is just south of Bend, at the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. It is very important to learn about the bat disease called White Nose Syndrome.
Do you know the hot spring at the end of the video? Comment below.
Massive Lava River Cave - Newberry National Volcanic Monument, Oregon
Another world exists underground in Oregon's longest lava tube. Descend into darkness as we navigate over 100 stairs near the entrance to the cave. The lava tube is over one mile long and is about fifty feet under ground. It was created by a massive lava flow many years ago.
We were required to have two light sources per person before we entered the self-guided cave. The temperature was a COLD 40 degrees and it took us almost two hours to explore the entire cave. Most people turned back before reaching the end of the lava tube. The warm September sun was welcomed after returning from what felt like the inside of a refrigerator!
This sequence was captured by a Canon Vixia HFS-100 camera in an extreme low-light (sometimes no-light) environment. Post production was with Adobe Premier Pro 6.0.

Virtual Hike: Lava River Cave | 360 | Bend, Oregon
#laverivercave #caving #virtualhike
(Note: This Samsung Gear 360 has poor stabilization and poor low-light visibility.)
Here Zach and I explore the Lava River Cave located near Bend, Oregon. This 360 vr hike takes you over a mile deep into the cave, to the very end. It would take over an hour to hike on location, but this vid has been edited down. It gets dark once you are away from the entrance, so if in doubt about your 360 directional arrow skills, it is best to stick mostly to straight ahead. Otherwise in some areas you will see a lot of black and have to scramble to find front and center again.
On this particular day it was about a hundred degrees (F) outside, and it's always 42 degrees deep in the cave.
Enjoy! (sorry about the camera shake and poor low-light video)

Roadschool fieldtrip to Lava River Cave at Newberry National Volcanic Monument
Just a few miles down the road from our campground in Bend Oregon is the Newberry National Volcanic Monument in the Deschutes National Forest. We decided to go with our friends, the Gantzer family, to check out the lava river cave.
It was a hot day out and we were all wearing shorts and t-shirts, but we had to bundle up before going in. As we descended the 55 steps down into the cave we could feel the temperature start to drop. The cave stays about 42 degrees Fahrenheit year round. We had our flashlights and it got dark really quick. They say to bring 2 lights per person and I see why, if one quit working, you'd never find your way out. It was completely dark in there.
Emmett was really hoping to see some bats, but the ranger let us know that bats don't usually stay in this cave as there are several others in the area that they prefer. He wasn't upset long because the cave was awesome and he was soon distracted.
This cave was different that some others we've been in. The talus caves were cool because you can climb on rock and crawl between narrow crevices. Some older caves we've been in had stalagmites and stalactites that were beautiful to look at but we weren't able to touch. Some caves have had bats, others haven't. The ranger told us that as far as caves go, this one is a young one. There hasn't been time for stalagmites or stalactites to form. This cave is a lava tube. It is basically a crusted over channel that the lava drained out of. It is about a mile long and was discovered in 1889 by a hunter after part of the roof collapsed.
The kids had a blast in the cave hollering and listening to their echoing voices, trying to hide from the adults behind rocks and just playing with their friends in the dark. We have been in several different caves on our adventures and this will be one we remember.

Day 22 Spirit & Pinard Falls, Newberry National Volcanic Monument & Bend Oregon USA Road Trip Part 2
Today we start with Spirit falls and Pinard falls, followed by a trip to the Newberry National Volcanic Monument Caldera and the main portion of the national park.
The hikes and waterfalls were beautiful, and some of the best waterfalls in Oregon. At the Caldera of Newberry there is also a great waterfall and some great hikes. There is also Paulina peak for amazing scenic views and lava beds you can hike. There is also the Big Obsidian Flow Trailhead and Interpretive Site, Lava Butte and Little crater to hike.
At the central portion of the park they have the Lava Butte which has amazing views over the entire area around Bend Oregon. There is also the Lava River Caves you can enter and explore. Its a unique experience as you walk in the over 1 mile long pitch dark cave.
Let's start a movement. Traveling before or while in college should be commonplace and expected. The power of travel is life-changing and has the potential to enhance society overall. When you travel you learn AMAZING things about yourself, the people around you, the world around you and the opportunities there are.
Without travel I argue that you will never realize your fullest potential because there is so much that you are missing out. Traveling even the smallest of distances will change the way your mind thinks and lead to what society needs most, people who have found a passion, are pursuig it and discovering breakthrough technologies, theories, lifestyles, careers and more.
In Europe this is already commonplace to take a semester, summer, month or year off to explore the EU before or during college. I want to make it commonplace in the United States of America as well. It is possible to do it on any budget and I help people learn how to make it a reality. Find out more at:
