MUST SEE - Lawn Hill & Adels Grove. Ep.18 Outback Road Trip Australia
The road to Adels Grove!
After our stay at Camooweal we trekked up to Adels Grove via the Riversleigh road. We only left Camooweal at midday, so after a few hours of driving it was time to set up camp again!
We pulled up, on top of this small hill approx 80km south of Adels Grove. The views were amazing! We watched the sunset and star gazed for hours that night. It was one of those magical spots that aren't on wiki camps!
The next day we packed up and continued the trek up to Adels. We stopped in at the Riversliegh Mammal fossil site to have lunch and a look around. ???? After a look around at the fossils & a full belly we hit the road again.
We arrived at Adels Grove that afternoon and checked in for 3 nights. We spent 2 days exploring Lawn Hill National Park and completed all the hikes. Our favourite spots in Lawn Hill would have to of been the Indarri waterfalls, wild dog dreaming track and the upper gorge lookout! Definitely paid to get up early and start the hikes before the days warmed up!
Adels Grove was also magical! Well worth a visit! Awesome fish and chips from the shack! They have tubes you can hire and just float around, an epic rope swing and some hidden gems worth exploring! We loved the fact they were dog friendly, so made traveling into Lawn Hill without rusty a breeze!
After our stay at Adels Grove we headed to Gregory Downs! We had never heard of Gregory Downs until a few fellow travelers mentioned we should definitely go, and it did not disappoint! We spent a total of 6 nights by the river at the free camp, as we loved it that much! The water ran down stream so we could float down a good 200m on our tubes!
The wildlife was amazing at Gregory, birds galore, wallabies just in the bushes behind our camp. The locals did show us a 2.5m fresh water croc which was cool to see! Gregory Downs was action packed with lots of things to keep us entertained! Kurts metal detector came in handy, when we helped a couple in distress! (separate post to come!)
Overall we had a blast at all (Adels, Lawn Hill & Gregory!) It was great being able to swim and relax around in these mini oasis.

Lawn Hill Gorge Outback Queensland, Australia
Lawn Hill Gorge, located in Boodjamulla National Park, is one of Queenslands hidden gems. Located in the North West corner of Queensland, approximately 1100km West of Cairns, this place is a must-see. Allow at least 3 nights here to experience everything this beautiful part of Australia has to offer.
The access road to Lawn Hill Gorge is made up of sealed and unsealed sections of road and can be rough in places.
The Lawn Hill Gorge campground is managed by Queensland National Parks and pre-booking a campsite by phone or online is essential as campsites can not be booked in person upon arrival. There are limited sites and they book out fast during busy periods, so booking well in advance is recommended. The campground has showers and flushing toilets and is a very short walk to the water. There is also a privately owned campground approximately 10km away at a place called Adels Grove, which makes for a great alternative camping area.
Boodjamulla National Park (Lawn Hill Gorge), Queensland
After a jaw breaking 80km corrugated road (compared similarly to Cape York) 2.5hrs later we drove into paradise, Adels Grove the perfect water side camp ground only 10kms from Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill Gorge) National Park. We set up camp for 4 nights in their grove, and each day explored the wide range of activities the park had on offer. Top of our list was to canoe the gorge, as we only have a tinny (which isn’t allowed in the gorge) we hired a double canoe for 2 hours at $54 dollars! but it was totally worth it. The orange/red cliffs against the green/blue water was like something out of a movie, it didn’t look real it was so perfect. We paddled both the lower and upper gorge which is connected by an overland causeway that you have to drag your canoes over. We swam right at the upper gorge, and due to the thermal spring feeding the gorge the water was a warm 28 degrees. For those wondering, only fresh water crocodiles spotted in these waters but unfortunately we didn’t get to see one.
As we had a full 3 days here we headed back to camp and recouped from the heat and planned for our hike the next day. I was very impressed with the diverse range of hikes available around the National Park, all within reasonable distance and with different grades of expertise made for a unique experience exploring the gorge from above. After our hot and dusty walks we would cool down at the beautiful Indarri Waterfalls, sheltered cascading waterfalls only 1.5kms from the park entrance was our highlight. We recommend walking in at sunset (we were the only ones there) taking a dip and watch the sun go down from atop the gorge!

LAWN HILL NATIONAL PARK it's EPIC ... You MUST VISIT// Adels Grove // Mt Isa Rodeo 2019
*** If your caravanning in Australia be prepared for corrugated roads, cause Australia has plenty of them. An if your planning on heading to Adels Grove you will experience them first hand like we did. Not to worry Lawn Hill National Park is well worth the drive, and we would do it all over an over again to experience the beauty of this place***
Ep 7 - After 50k's of rough patchy corrugated roads, we finally arrived @ Adels Grove camping ground, situated only a short drive from Lawn Hill National Park. Lena at first wasn't overly impressed with Adels Grove camp grounds as I had sold her on the idea of a lush and picturesque surround only for us to pull up in a dust bowl of a campground.
However, Lena's tune soon changed when she discovered the beauty of Lawn Hill Gorge and Adels Grove camp grounds
After the dirt road from Gregory to Lawn Hill, we found the van was schmick inside, no dust in sight thanks to our dust proofing of the caravan, but that changed as soon as the first car drove through camp and we had the windows open.
After a good nights sleep back at Adels Grove camp, we ambitiously set the alarms for a pre-sunrise wake-up. Upon hitting snooze for the eighth time in a row and throwing the phone at the wall, we eventually got out of bed, had a quick bowl of cereal and punched it over to Lawn Hill Gorge. We were greeted with an amazing golden hour which made for some spectacular photos and drone footage.
We explored the South Western side of the walking trails all the way down to the Upper Gorge Lookout. After a decent rocky hike, you find yourself gazing back up towards the Island Stack and the aqua water in the gorge below. It definitely is worth the effort if you are chasing a peaceful morning.
The water was a beautiful temperature We could have stayed swimming for hours, but we had tracks to make south to Mt Isa as we had tickets for the 60th Anniversary of the famous Mt Isa Rodeo.

Boodjamulla Lawn Hill National Park
Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park lies on ancient sandstone of the Constance Range, between the Barkly Tablelands to the south-west and the black soils of the Gulf Savanna Plains to the east. The Gorge is formed by Lawn Hill Creek, which is fed by numerous freshwater springs from the limestone plateau to the west
The best way of seeing the Gorge is by Canoeing on the still waters of Lawn Hill Creek to explore the middle and upper gorges. A stop half way gave us all a chance to swim underneath the small waterfalls.
An awesome day out.
