Laws Falls turns lawless!!
This tourist spot now stinks due to discharge of sewage water and has also turned a den for anti social elements.
Laws Falls situated between Coonoor and Mettupalayam was an important tourist destination till a few years back. The falls earlier had all facilities including eating areas, drinking water and a forest guard for security. But, the forest department has now withdrawn it all and with the sewage from Coonnor draining into the falls, the place stinks of sewer.
THE GREAT LAW'S FALL CLEAN UP | WORLD RIVERS DAY | 30 SEPTEMBER 2018
WORLD RIVERS DAY
THE GREAT LAW’S FALL CLEANUP
VFX & SFX ARRANGEMENTS - ANTO FRANKLIN A.C
CINIMATOGRPHY - BIJU JOHN
Nearly a ton and a half of plastics, rags and other miscellaneous waste, were collected in the cleanup drive organised by ‘Clean Coonoor’ to mark World Rivers Day. They were either fished out from within, or picked up from the banks, along the 50 metre stretch of water which forms a small pool at the bottom of the Law’s Fall.
If such as small region could yield such a quantity of trash, the question that arises next is, what would be the amount of litter cluttering the entire course of the river and its feeders. It sure ‘puzzles the will,’ and maybe, it could be a million tons or even more.
The Nilgiri district is part of the much vaunted biosphere reserve of the same name, and perhaps a rethink is the need of the hour. The Man and Biosphere Project of the UNESCO envisages three interrelated zones. Much is spoken about the core and buffer zones, but on the contrary, not a word is ever uttered about the transition area. The latter is a part of any such reserve where the greatest anthropogenic activity is allowed, with an aim to foster economic and human development that is socioculturally and ecologically sustainable.
It is in the transition zone, that agencies both governmental and non governmental have a vital role to play. Equal importance has to be given in prevention of harmful activities here, for these may indirectly affect the core and buffer zones.
If the people living upstream to the Law’s Fall had been made aware of the ill-effects of littering, and the fact that the Coonoor River isn't a trash can, perhaps the river would presently be clean.
Nearly a quarter of the garbage collected seems to have been generated in the municipal market upstream ; polystyrene containers, woven polymer bags, plastic packaging material and such. The rest were plain household trash, and litter which had been washed in the surface runoff. Water and soft drink bottles topped the list, followed by old clothing and other linen, plastic wraps of all description, milk sachets, plastic toys, and etcetera. To cut a long story short the region was soon clear of all the garbage that could be carted away.
The theory that why bother to clean up at all, as the accumulated garbage is bound to be washed away in the next downpour doesn’t hold water. Some of the milk sachets collected were either manufactured a decade ago, or during such a time when milk was being sold at Rupees Sixteen a litre.
This cleanup was organised to serve as an eye-opener, perhaps it will draw the attention of the public and the administration to the fact that the river is slowly getting clogged up, and in due course of time, would open up new channels which may prove disastrous.
Clean Coonoor thanks the forest personal and the many volunteers who participated in the cleanup. A special thanks to the many unknown ; bikers, tourists and others ; who on finding out what was going on, pitched in willingly ; despite being ill-clad for messy work. It is such actions that makes one still have hope in humanity.

Waterfall incident in India sweeps family into the water
Had the irrigation and PWD departments been more sensitive, this incident would not have take place.
We display this video in an effort to create awareness about the dangers of monsoon flash floods across India, and to pay homage and obeisance to the people involved in the incident. If we can create some awareness out of this video, some very modest amount of good can come out of the terrible tragedy that befell this family. We bow our heads to the loss of life and convey our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family concerned.
Fortunately, there were also survivors in the group, despite the fall from a great height, with the flow of the waterfall.
This tragic accident happened at the Patalpani waterfall in Indore, when a father and his 4 kids celebrated the MBA graduation of the oldest daughter and got surprised by the freak flood. A tragedy for these 3 family members resulted - the father and 2 girls died while the 2 boys are alive.
This is the original video of the Indore Patalpani accident that was caused by a flash flood. Wilderness Films India has exclusive rights to this video.
Three members of a family were drowned as flash flood caused a sudden flow of water in the famous Patalpani waterfall near Indore. Indore Patalpani Accident.
