A day at the Laytown Races
What's it like at the races? Here is a short video of some action from the Laytown Races 13th September 2016.
Laytown races is held once a year, in Laytown Co. Meath, Ireland.
The only Horse race event run on a beach under the Irish Rules of Racing. Once a year event. Next race 11th Sept 2019 on Laytown Strand, Co.Meath, Ireland.

Finally managed to achieve a long term goal of attending the annual racing at Laytown this year. It was a perfect day and great fun.
Easy to get do, well organised and plenty to do for all on the beach for everybody. Highly recommended. Looking forward to going again in the future.
I've put together some clips of a race to capture some of the atmosphere, but the best way to experience it is to attend yourself!

The Laytown Races
Laytown races occupies a unique position in the Irish and English racing calendar as it is the only race event run on a beach under the rules of the Turf Club.

Once a year in Ireland there is a unique race, they race on the beach. The only race in Europe run under rules on a beach and it's a busy betting market too!
I became really interested in visiting this unique racecourse and I so I went there a couple of years ago to have a look.
This is my story of that trip and what I found at the incredibly appropriately named 'Laytown'

Laytown - Ireland - August 2017
Laytown is a village in County Meath, Ireland. Since 1868 Laytown has hosted a single annual horse racing meeting on its beach - one of only a couple on sand (held on the beach) race meetings run under official rules of racing in Europe.

Laytown races is an annual tradition in Ireland and the only race meeting on the sand recognised under the Rules of Racing.
On its 150th anniversary, Vanessa Ryle made the trip to the County Meath coast to take a closer look at what it takes to get a horse to the unique event and, more importantly, how to win at Laytown.
The story begins in the sales rings at Tattersalls, as trainer Denis Hogan and his owners head to Newmarket to find a potential type for the beach.
After trips to the Galway Festival and Leopardstown for lot 171 - runs with some promise with the big target in mind - finally Laytown beckons and day out on the beach. What he was bought for, what he was trained for - will Cyrus Dallin make this tale a happy one?
