Dolmen de Bagneux Discover Secret France
Dolmen de Bagneux Discover Secret France
The Bagneux Dolmen (Le Dolmen de Bagneux) is the largest dolmen in France, second largest in Europe (the Spanish dolmen in Antequera, near Malaga, is bigger). This dolmen is HUGE
and worth visiting for that alone, but its location makes it even more interesting. The city has grown around the dolmen, so it is tucked into a walled garden, surrounded by other
buildings. When we went looking for this dolmen, we drove to Bagneux, a suburb of Saumur, and followed signs to the dolmen. The dolmen is located on a side street. We parked on the
street and rang the bell at the closed gate. The owner came out, collected the entrance fee, and let us into the back yard of the cafe. The cafe was closed when we visited - otherwise,
you could see the dolmen from the cafe. The famous Dolmen in Bagneux is probably one of the most majestic French dolmens and the largest of the 4,500 dolmens spread out on about
60 French departments. The overall length of this dolmen is over 23 meters (75 feet) and its chamber is over 18 meters (60 feet) long. As all dolmens, the 'Great Covered stone in
Bagneux, was a large chamber tomb which must have contained a great number of prehistoric skeletons during the neolithic age, i.e.from 4,000 to 2,000 B.C., that is about 5,000 years
ago. Only suppositions can be made on the way the dolmens were built. The flagstones must have been raised several times with numerous levers while pebbles were slid underneath the
stone.Once it was raised to a certain level, and lying on a heap of pebbles, it was easier to pull it further. Then, the same operation started all over again.

Saumur france
Early settlement of the region goes bank many thousands of years. The Dolmen de Bagneux on the south of the town, is 23 meters long and is built from 15 large slabs of the local stone, weighing over 500 tons. It is the largest in France.
The Château de Saumur was constructed in the 10th century to protect the Loire river crossing from Norman attacks after the settlement of Saumur was sacked in 845. The castle was destroyed in 1067 and inherited by the House of Plantagenet was rebuilt by Henry II of England in the later 12th century. It changed hands several times between Anjou and France until 1589.
Houses in Saumur are constructed almost exclusively of the beautiful, but fragile Tuffeau stone. The caves dug to excavate the stone have become tunnels and have been used by the local vineyards as locations to store their wines.[1]
The School of Saumur is the name used to denote a distinctive form of Reformed theology taught by Moses Amyraut at the University of Saumur in the 17th century. Saumur is also the scene for Balzac's novel Eugénie Grandet, written by the French author in 1833, and the title of a song from hard rock band Trust (whose lyrics express their poor opinion of the city: narrow-minded, bourgeois and militaristic).
Prior to the French Revolution Saumur was the capital of the Sénéchaussée de Saumur, a bailiwick, that existed until 1793. Saumur was then the location of the Battle of Saumur during the Revolt in the Vendée. Becoming a state prison under Napoleon Bonaparte. The town was an equestrian centre with both the military cavalry school from 1783 and later the Cadre Noir based there.
