On the axis leading to the village of Gaoulou, this arch bridge was built around 1940. Its name, comes from that of General Weygand, a colonial administrator. In the colonial era, the economy of southwestern Ivory Coast was prosperous and the productions agricultural and natural resources were important. To export them in conditions irreproachable, it was necessary to improve the roads which in many cases were at the last degree of wear. They no longer met the requirements of rapid, safe and expensive because of increased traffic. Built around 1940, the curvilinear bridge of General Weygand is the first concrete bridge from West Africa. It is placed on the rocks that dot the stream and spans the Sassandra river on the island of Gaoulou. Located 15 km from Sassandra towards Lakota this bridge is an expression of the will of the colonizer to endow Cote d'Ivoire with modern means of transport.
