Montauban is a historical bastide town situated about 50 kilometres north of Toulouse in the Tarn-et-Garonne department. The town, founded in 1144 by the Count of Toulouse on the banks of the Tarn River, is largely constructed using the attractive pink stone found in the region, like its great southern cousin Toulouse.
The highlight of the town is at the centre of the original bastide in the Place Nationale. Surrounded by grand pink houses in the red-brick that is unique to this part of France, and set above fine arcades, the very attractive central square in Montauban was largely rebuilt in the 17th century after a fire, hence is not the original bastide centre.
The arcades (the arches and walkways that surround the square and historically provided shelter for the market traders) are an unusual 'double' construction with one set of arcades near the house and shop fronts and another closer to the main square. Intact on all four sides, this central square in Montauban is one of the most impressive to be seen in all of the bastide towns of south-west France and some experts maintain that it is also the oldest bastide town in France.
After perhaps stopping for a pause in one of the cafes in the town centre be sure to wander around the surrounding streets a little. For example, if you follow the Rue de la Republique you will see a smaller square called Place du Coq which is also charming. Following the traditional grid pattern of a bastide town, the straight streets of Montauban town centre around the centre now form a lively shopping centre, with lots of interesting features and buildings to discover. Keep exploring along Rue de la Republique until you reach the river and a chance to see the lovely old bridge - and old it is, having being built around 1303-1335.
Among the highlights in Montauban you will discover the Church of Saint Jacques - an attractive 13th century church with an octagonal belfry and an impressive mosaic entrance that survived the fires that later destroyed much of the town centre. Another religious monument, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame (1739) is in a classical - baroque style with four statues on the facde and notable as being one of the few buildings in the centre to be built from stone. Inside the cathedral you can see a 17th century organ and an important painting by Ingres.
One notable attraction here in Montauban is the Museum Ingres (next to the old bridge), where you can see the works of renowned 19th century artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and another local artist called Bourdelle. The museum is found in an impressive palace that has been built on the site of an earlier palace that was occupied by the Black Prince during the Hundred Years War, and you can see remains of the original building in the basement of the Museum.

Places to see in ( Montauban - France ) Canal de Montech
The Canal de Montech is a 10.9 km waterway in southwestern France connecting the Canal de Garonne in Montech and the Tarn River in Montauban. It is also known as the Montauban Branch. It is also known as the Montauban Branch (French: l’embranchement de Montauban).
A lock at Moissac also connects the Canal de Garonne to a lower section of the Tarn. A proposal exists to create a waterway ring, including the Canal de Montech, by restoring navigation to the stretch of the Tarn between Moissac and Montauban.
The Montech Canal (or channel of the Montauban branch ) is a French canal that connects the Tarn to the Garonne Canal. Located in Tarn-et-Garonne in the Midi-Pyrénées region , it runs 10.9 km in the municipalities of Montech , Lacourt-Saint-Pierre and Montauban .
Built at the same time as the Garonne Canal which it is a branch to join Montauban and the Tarn (which was navigable at the time) hence its other name: Montauban branch channel. It was opened to navigation between Toulouse , Montech and Montauban in 1844. The first works were awarded in 1839. The Garonne canal is put into service until Moissac in 1845, then Agen , in December 1849, the Baïse , in 1852 and its terminus in April 1856. The canal port of Montauban has 32 rings and a wooden pontoon of 90 m since 2016, this allows to receive boats of more than 25 m.

MONTAUBAN / MONTALBAN. A walking tour around the city / Un paseo por la ciudad
MONTAUBAN (Occitan: MONTALBAN) is a commune in the Tarn-et-Garonne department in the Occitanie region in southern France. It is the capital of the department and lies 50 kilometres (31 mi) north of Toulouse. Montauban is the most populated town in Tarn-et-Garonne, and the sixth most populated of Occitanie.
The town has been classified “Ville d’art et d’histoire” (City of art and history) since 2015.
The town, built mainly of a reddish brick, stands on the right bank of the Tarn at its confluence with the Tescou.
Montauban is the second oldest (after Mont-de-Marsan) of the bastides of southern France. Its foundation dates from 1144 when Count Alphonse Jourdain of Toulouse, granted it a liberal charter. The inhabitants were drawn chiefly from Montauriol, a village which had grown up around the neighbouring monastery of St Théodard.
In the 13th century the town suffered much from the ravages of the Albigensian war and from the Inquisition, but by 1317 it had recovered sufficiently to be chosen by John XXII as the head of a diocese of which the basilica of St Théodard became the cathedral.
In 1360, under the Treaty of Brétigny, it was ceded to the English; they were expelled by the inhabitants in 1414. In 1560 the bishops and magistrates embraced Protestantism, expelled the monks, and demolished the cathedral. Ten years later it became one of the four Huguenot strongholds under the Peace of Saint-Germain, and formed a small independent republic. It was the headquarters of the Huguenot rebellion of 1621, and successfully withstood an 86-day siege by Louis XIII. It did not submit to royal authority until after the fall of La Rochelle in 1629, when its fortifications were destroyed by Cardinal Richelieu. The Protestants again suffered persecution after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685.
In the 17th century, the King of France revoked “l’Édit de Nantes”. Montauban was considered as an intellectual city. Because Montauban was a Protestant town, it started to resist and hold its position against the royal power and it refused to give allegiance to the Catholic King. To scare off the King’s opponents and speed up the end of the siege, 400 cannonballs were fired, but Montauban resisted and the royal army was vanquished. Saint Jacques church is still marked by the cannonballs, and every year in September, the city celebrates “les 400 coups” (the 400 shots), which has become a common phrase in French.
During World War II, Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa was briefly hidden in a secret vault behind a wine cellar at Montauban.
