Leacanabuaile Stone Fort, Cahersiveen, Wild Atlantic Way
Leacanabuaile Stone Fort is a fine, partly-reconstructed stone fort about 1.5 metres high on a massive rock foundation, the enclosure's internal diameter is about 20m. Protected on three sides by steep grassy slopes, the entrance is on the eastern side. Inside the fort are a number of ruined buildings. The walls, mostly 3 metres thick and with irregular steps leading up on the inside, contain the remnants of a square dwelling house built on top of earlier circular ones; another clochan on the western side has a cavity leading to a long souterrain which is about 7 metres long and less than 1 metre high, which was mostly likely used as a place of refuge and storage. There is also the remains of a rotary quern used for grinding corn. Excavation of the site in the 1930s and 1940s produced Iron and Bronze Age objects, suggesting the existence of an early Christian farming community from the 9th or 10th century.

Cahergall Ring Fort was built around 600AD, based just outside the town of Cahersiveen, Co. Kerry, Ireland. It is well worth a visit. The current structure has undergone some reconstruction and while the purist may say it is too “clean and pure” it is an impressive site. With walls approximately 6 meters high and some 3 meters thick this dry stone wall fort is one of the best examples of an early medieval stone fort to be found on the ring of Kerry.
