Bat Lake Hiking Trail, Algonquin Park - Winter Hiking
Bat Lake Trail is located at kilometre 30.0 on Highway 60 in Algonquin Provincial Park.
Bat Lake is a 5.6 km loop trail that introduces you to basic Algonquin Park ecology while visiting a beautiful hemlock stand, a fine lookout, and acidic Bat Lake.
On the day we visited in early February, there was under 30 cm of snow on the ground. The previous day was warm and rainy, so there was a thin crust of ice on the snow and fantastic cascades of ice clung to the cliffs on either side of the steep ravine near the west end of the trail.

March 1, 2019 Algonquin Park Skiing - Fen Lake Trail
For those who might have skied the Fen Lake ski trail in Algonquin Park, Ontario, and would like some video footage of the park in winter (with some drone footage as well). The trail is deceptive. It looked track-set, but no machine grooming had been done for about 2 weeks. The tracks were from good skiers trying to stay within the old depressions from previous grooming. This made it difficult to stay in the tracks whenever speed increased. I crashed 4 times (you will see them all). The last one ripped the sole of the shoe off, so the last 4 km had to be walked. Waxing was fantastic at -8 C.

Hike-in trip, Maple Leaf Lake - Nov 2016
Shaken from seeing people get thrown into very cold water earlier this year, Shane and I hike into our last trip of 2016. It emphasized new challenges for us, and allowed us to reflect on how nice it can be having a canoe.
