A Vertical of Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet
The 30th of August every year marks International Cabernet Day and we got seriously lucky this year, picking up 8 different vintages of Leconfield's revered Coonawarra Cabernet to have a squiz at. Matt and Phil stepped through the 2002, 2004, and 2009-2014 and saw quality and refinement improve markedly over the journey. What started as a very good looking lineup finished as absolutely outstanding.
Leconfield Wines
Leconfield is a remarkable family wine business dating from 1837 that Wine Selectors is proud to partner with. It encompasses two of South Australia's leading wine labels -- Leconfield Wines at Coonawarra and Richard Hamilton Wines at McLaren Vale.
Red Earth: Comparing Coonawarra Cabernet's....
The Dr and the Chef thought we would have a look at the Coonawarra's most famous wines..... Cabernet Sauvignon. The red earth of the terra rossa soils of the Coonawarra region in the South East of South Australia are famous for the quality of the Cabernet Sauvignon that it produces. Many of Australia's most famous wine brands, and flagship Cabernet's are filled with fruit from this region. The Coonawarra has a reputation for being the place to buy a Cabernet from in Australia, if not the world.
So we delved into the wine cellar, and found two great Coonawarra Cabernet's to compare. Both coming from Coonawarra estate wineries, and both at the mid price point for quality. We thought we would compare:
Reschke Wines - The Bos. Cabernet Sauvignon RRP A35-$40
Parker Estate Wines - Terra Rossa Cabernet Sauvignon RRP A$ 35-40
These Cabernet's demonstrate all of the good things about a Coonawarra Cabernet, good drinking, not too expensive, and impressive. Watch this episode of the Dr and the Chef to find out more about what we thought of these great wines.

Cabernet Sauvignon Wine from Coonawarra, Australia - McGuigan Shortlist
Neil McGuigan of McGuigan Wines joins Majestic Wine to taste his Shortlist Cabernet Sauvignon, a limited production wine available exclusively at Majestic and a wine from the Coonawarra region -
This beautiful Coonawarra Cabernet comes from the 2009 vintage. What we're trying to do with our Cabernet Sauvignon is we're not trying to make Aussie Dry Red from Cabernet Sauvignon. We're trying to make varietal cabernet. As a result, we're all about fruit on the nose, and this wine shows beautiful cassis, rhubarb, and some cherry characters on the nose, just with a hint of oak as well, so it's in the varietal style of Cabernet Sauvignon.
The palette with this one is all about structure. The palette with good cabernets is all about structure. It's got length, it's got refinement, it's got beautiful tannin on the inside of the gums, but not aggressive. It has beautiful warmth, obviously coming from the Australian sun, and it's a wine that has great texture. Also, the wine, by the structure of the wine, you can feel that it's quite firm on the middle of the palette, which means that it's going to age gracefully. It's a wine that you could consume now or in the next 4 to 5 years, and it would be fantastic with roast beef on the rarer side rather than on the well-done side.

Episode 36: '02 Wynn's Coonawarra Shiraz
Coonawawwa, blah blah blah blah . . . the Grapedonk searched in vain for a reason to buy this wine based on the label alone. With the cabbage patch in front, it doesn't look like a vineyard.
But, on tasting, Grapedonk exclaimed, Sue (the winemaker) has her shit together! It's not a flavor party like the Castle Rock Pinot, but with light grip and rich fruit, this wine kicks ass. For $5.99, this is a full court swoosh, over the shoulder, can't go wrong with that.
We paid $5.99 for this wine.
