For our final stop, we headed down to the southernmost part of Canada that straddles the busiest international border crossing in the world.
Essex County is known for its long summers and mild winters, making it a sweet spot for both farmers and eaters. It’s home to a bounty of artisanal food and drink, with the longest growing season of any of our wine producing regions, and more greenhouses than anywhere else in Ontario. Here, every season is growing season.

The Leamington Greenhouse Tomato | WE ARE THE BEST
Ontario produces over half of the country’s greenhouse tomatoes. Paul Mastronardi, president of the largest greenhouse tomato operation in North America, tells us how his family introduced greenhouse tomato production methods to our continent.
ABOUT WE ARE THE BEST:
We Are the Best is one of the Canada 150 Signature Initiative Projects by the Government of Canada. Throughout 2017, several initiatives with a nationwide reach will give Canadians the opportunity to come together and celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation.
The series will pay tribute to the young entrepreneurs and creators—including farmers, winegrowers, artisans and chefs—who are shaping our culinary heritage now and for the future.
