Deshotel files bill to end high stakes testing
State Representative says too much effort spent teaching the STAAR test instead of teaching students to develop critical thinking skills
Austin, TX - From Office of State Rep. Joe Deshotel
Representative Deshotel filed a bill that completely eliminates high stakes testing. The bill will be heard by the Public Education committee on March 12, and he encourages parents, students and educators to have their voices heard by testifying before the committee, or calling or writing their Representatives.
Deshotel released this statement in support of HB 1423:
Over the past year and a half I have listened to the concerns of parents, students and educators about our public school's broken accountability system. This bill maintains rigor and accountability while expanding the number of pathways to graduation for High School students. The elimination of teaching to the test and giving more options to students should decrease our dropout rate and increase workforce readiness.
Key points of HB 1423:
This bill eliminates state high-stakes testing as a graduation requirement and the 15% of end-of-course (EOC) tests counting toward course grades;
Specifies higher education as 4-yr, 2-yr and technical schools
Requires the TEA to adopt nationally recognized, norm-reference tests in grades 3-8 in reading, mathematics and science consistent with the requirements of No Child Left Behind.
Require high school guidance counselors to provide students with information regarding post secondary opportunities in both college and the workforce.
Authorizes school districts to use high school allotment funding for workforce readiness program

Boise County Sheriff Dept. trained this dog really good! Let's see some ID, Bud!
I'm still not happy about this Sheriff Department taking $360 from me for a bogus charge. It's like they knew they would lose in court for the false charge and just went for the quick profit of towing my car, keeping me in jail over the weekend, while I accrued daily charges. Criminal actions!
