The Chichu Art Museum (地中美術館, Chichū Bijutsukan) is a unusual modern art museum built into a hillside overlooking the southern coast of Naoshima. The museum building, designed by Ando Tadao and itself a work of art, is mostly located underground and solely utilizes natural light to illuminate the artwork. This creates a viewing experience that is deeply influenced by the surrounding natural environment.
The museum has been built around quite a small collection of art. The first gallery shows large murals from Claude Monet's Water Lilies series. This is followed by a few works by James Turrell, who uses light as a medium. They include the Open Sky room from his Skyspaces series which has sister exhibits around the world including the 21st Century Museum in Kanazawa. Finally, the deepest part of the Chichu Museum houses the Time/Timeless/No Time installation by Walter De Maria.
Tickets are purchased at the museum's ticket center which is located a short walk downhill from the museum entrance. The ticket center has a small cafe and waiting area as only a limited number of visitors are allowed to the museum at one time. There are also coin lockers available since bags and cameras are not allowed in the museum and must be stowed before entering.

It consists of four buildings: the Museum, Oval, Park and Beach, all designed by well-known architect Ando Tadao. Each building features its own unique artwork and guest rooms.
The main attraction of the Benesse House is its modern art museum, built on a hill overlooking the sea. This museum shows work created by many different artists from both Japan and abroad, that was inspired by the natural surroundings of Naoshima and the architecture on the island. Hotel guest staying at the Museum and Oval buildings can enjoy 24 hour access to the museum.
In addition to the art displayed in the museum and in the guest rooms, there are nearly twenty art pieces placed on the lawns and beaches around the Benesse House, including the famous pumpkin. Many of these can be found along the cliffs and shore below the museum, and have been specially designed to integrate into the natural surroundings in which they are placed.
The Benesse House has other facilities including restaurants, cafes, shops and a spa that are open to staying guests as well as day visitors. Hotel guests have the added privileges of exclusive restaurants and after-hours access to the museum. The Benesse House is the top level accommodation on the island, and room rates start from about 25,000 yen per night.

Lee Ufan | Topos (Excavated) - 2015
In Topos (Excavated), Lee has transformed one of the wine cellars at Ama into an immersive installation that turns on the relationship between the resonant context of the 14th century architecture and the visual language developed by the artist.
Ama is a small hamlet nestled in the Chianti hills: it is located in the town of Gaiole in Chianti in the province of Siena amidst vineyards, olive groves, and forests. The Castello di Ama winery is renowned internationally as one of the world’s best, as well as the site of one of the most important contemporary collections of site-specific works of art. The winery was established in 1972, as the result of the passion of four Roman families, and boasts a total surface area of nearly 230 hectares, of which 80 are dedicated to vineyard cultivation and 40 to olive trees, at an average altitude of 480 meters. The winery’s production of approximately 300 thousand bottles a year comes exclusively from its own vineyards and finds its arechetypal expression in Castello di Ama, an authentic ambassador of Chianti Classico.

Japan Vlog • Part 2 • Naoshima, Michelin-Star Instant Noodles, Foot Sap Sheets
Hey everyone! I'm back with part 2 of our Japan vlogs. We took a quick 2-night side trip to Naoshima, which is a beautiful island filled with modern art. It was amazing, and I'd love to go back one day to visit the other islands. While in Naoshima, Hubby and I found some Michelin-Star instant noodles. I wish we had brought a bigger luggage so we could bring some back, but alas they were too bulky. Next time! We also tried foot sap sheets, which Hubby saw people buying up in boxes. Have any of you tried these before? Thanks so much for watching! x

直島 Naoshima
| 地中美術館 | 很美!美到不行!個人覺得是人生必來之美術館,我還想再去一次。
| Benesse House Museum | 很可惜到直島的時節正在休館中,飯店頗貴,但官網照片房間美景也美。
| 李禹煥美術館 | 跟地中一樣是安藤忠雄的建築,裡面展出李禹煥作品,算是一個很小的美術館。
豐島 Teshima

Naoshima is an island located in the Seto Inland Sea of Japan. It is renowned for its collection of contemporary art galleries and exhibits.
Naoshima is best known for the Benesse House complex. There has been extensive domestic attention to the Chichu Art Museum completed in 2006. The island itself has been settled as long as there have been Japanese. The original settlement is the now-diminuitive fishing port of Tsumuura. The most prominent settlement on the island is Honmura which was established as a coastal castle town (warring states) period (1467-1568). A number of houses in this town have been radically reformed in the Art House Project. Miyanoura
Une famille au Japon: One day in Naoshima
After a wonderful trip on a ferry boat, we were surprised to discover a not so much visited island where works of art are freely scattered in nature and villages!

The 007 Museum is devoted to the James Bond novel The Man with the Red Tattoo by Raymond Benson. The story is set partially on Naoshima; however, it was never made into a movie. The purpose of the museum is to bring attention to the novel with the hope that it will eventually be adapted to film.
Exhibits include fan art and scenes from The Man with the Red Tattoo and a short movie titled From Naoshima with Love, which was filmed on Naoshima and close by Takamatsu. In addition, there are posters and paraphernalia from actual Bond movies, especially from the movie You Only Live Twice, so far the only James Bond movie set in Japan.
